TEACHING STUDENTS WITH AUTISM:
STRATEGIES FOR SUCCESS - ONLINE
Just 20 years ago, we didn’t see students with autism in our
classrooms but now we teach children with high-functioning
autism and Asperger’s Syndrome right alongside their neurotypical
peers. Reaching and teaching these students requires a delicate
balancing act: understanding how their brains are wired, helping
them turn challenges into opportunities, and learning to enjoy
the rich perspective they bring to the classroom. This course
will help you develop the skills to counter these students’ social
awkwardness, sensory sensitivities, meltdowns, problems with
homework completion, language reciprocity issues, and violent
fixations and equip you to deal with any student who exhibits
these characteristics on a regular basis.

ELDERCOLLEGE
FALL 2013
SCHEDULE
What is the ElderCollege Lifelong Learning Institute at
Terra State? Learning for the joy of it with no tests, grades or
credit associated with the educational experiences! Discover the
joy of lifelong learning with other adults, age 50 and beyond, who
share a common desire to learn. ElderCollege is a membership
organization for active adults, regardless of their educational
background. There are no tests or grades, although a few
classes do have assignments - if you take a painting or writing
class you can expect to paint or write!
A LITTLE HISTORY
Since the first four classes offered in the fall of 1994,
ElderCollege has grown in numbers and educational offerings.
The Elderhostel Institute Network assisted the founding members
in forming this Lifelong Learning Institute (LLI). This Institute
was the brainchild of Fr. William Cunningham who heard about
this type of program on a national news program and from
fellow members of a hiking club he belonged to. He gathered
three friends (Davis Sunderland, LaMar Christy and Robert
Van Hook) to help him research and expand upon the idea for
our area. Several established institutes were visited to gain an
understanding of how other programs were organized. They
visited with Dr. Charlotte Lee and established Terra Community
College as the program host. These men, along with others who
joined them in their efforts, organized an informational meeting
to see if there was interest in our area to move forward. This
first meeting attracted many adults interested in establishing a
lifelong learning organization. ElderCollege was born!
Several thousand adults interested in participating in lifelong
learning have attended classes or gone on educational outings
with ElderCollege since 1994. Courses in art appreciation,
computers, history, music, literature, science, and many more
subjects generate interest each year and discussions often exceed
the confines of the classroom walls. Outings have been taken
to local and regional sites of interest for hands-on learning and
in-depth historical perspective. Cooperative science and nature
programs continue to be offered through the Sandusky County
Parks District. More than forty members serve in leadership
positions each year to keep ElderCollege functioning. They serve
three-year rotating terms on one of the following committees:
Steering, Curriculum, Executive, Travel, Special Events and
Social, Nominating, or Public Relations. These leaders have a
vital role in keeping ElderCollege directed toward the classes and
outings of interest to the members. Several members also serve
as classroom representatives.
have grown this fund to $18500 with currently $550 available
to use for ElderCollege Lifelong Learning scholarships. Thank
you for your continued contributions to this fund. Tax-deductible
donations of any size are always welcome. If you wish to discuss
inclusion of the endowment in your estate plans, contact the
foundation office at the college (419.559.2301).
Let’s keep the fund and program growing for the future!
ELDERHOSTEL

members not only participate in classes and activities at Terra,
but also attend Elderhostel programs throughout the world. The
Elderhostel catalogs are available online at www.elderhostel.org.
The Elderhostel Institute Network information is available on-line
at http://www.elderhostel.org/ein/intro.asp.

INCLEMENT WEATHER POLICY
ElderCollege classes or committee meetings are never held when
Terra is closed. These announcements are made on local TV
and radio stations. If classes are delayed until 10:00 AM, we will
begin with our 10 AM class unless you hear otherwise. Please
make certain that we have your correct phone number so we may
contact you with class-related information. If a class is cancelled,
we will attempt to add it at the end of the class series. Always use
your own best judgment on traveling to Terra for a class.
Just A Note...
Last year was a banner year for the
ElderCollege program here at Terra State
Community College. We had two wonderful
trips, the Canada Whale watching trip and
the Savannah, GA. trip that required two
busses, a first! This year shows no signs
of stopping. This fall, you will have the
availability to travel, learn about some of our
presidents, and explore an old or new drink.
A special thanks goes out to all of our
committee members who have worked very
hard this past year to make my role in the
program a bit easier. If you are interested in
having your voice heard, please let me know.
A new voice will keep the program fresh and
interesting for time to come!
KEEP THE ENDOWMENT GROWING!
The Cunningham ElderCollege Endowment Fund is in
existence to keep ElderCollege operating costs affordable. Please
consider making a donation – small or large to help this fund
grow to the point where it will actually be able to make a large
difference in the financial picture of ElderCollege. Each year
as the College budget gets tighter; it becomes more important
for ElderCollege to cover all expenses. Only a portion of the
interest is available to use. As this Fund grows, we will have a
greater amount of money available for scholarships and special
programs. With a larger endowment, we would be able to use
some for operating expenses without raising course fees. We
continue to have a scholarship fund to assist any member who is
in need of some additional funds to cover class fees. Donations
to the Cunningham ElderCollege Endowment Fund help make
this scholarship fund possible. Contributions are invested and
only a portion of the interest is used. Members and friends have
made tax-deductible donations to establish and grow this fund.

3:45 PM – 4:30 PM
Entertainer: Floyd Collins, Magician
Floyd Collins, a native of Northwest Ohio, has been entertaining
audiences with his unique blend of magic, mindreading, mystery
and comedy since he was 9 years old. As a youngster, he performed
in a variety of venues, from middle school talent shows to family
outings. He has performed around Ohio and the country to packed
houses at Renaissance shows, theaters, private clubs, schools
and corporate audiences. While many recognizable magicians
have helped further Floyd’s understanding of the magical arts, he
said the two major influences on his development as a performer
were childhood friend Dan Harlan and the late Richard Myers.
Floyd is more than a performer. He is also a creator of magical
effects; an author of books on performance, magic and mentalism;
a consultant for emerging magicians and mindreaders; and a
contributor to other effects and books on magic. He is also a High
School career technical teacher, who combines his passion for
learning and teaching with his love for magic.
