Heraldine “Deanie” Rommel
Ettrick’s “Citizen of the Year”
For 2010
The Ettrick Lions Club announced their nominee for “Citizen of the Year” in conjunction
with the Village’s Annual Fun Days Celebration
scheduled August 26-29. Heraldine Rommel,
long time resident and active volunteer in many
organizations and community events, will
receive her award on Thursday, August 26th at
7:00 p.m. in the Ettrick Community
Center.Known to many by her nickname
“Deanie”, she was born in Sumner, Iowa in 1954
to Marjorie and Harold Maurer. Heraldine has
one brother and four sisters (two are deceased).
She attended grade school in West Union, Iowa
and transferred to Melrose Elementary when the
family moved to Wisconsin in 1964. She graduated from Melrose-Mindoro High School in
1972. She married Robin Rommel in 1972 and
they have two children - Randi and Ryan. Her
daughter Randi married Chad Stanley and they
have two children - Macaid (9) and Sada (5).
Son, Ryan married Nikki Hornberg and they
provided three more grandchildren, River (7),
Randon (6), and Reece (4). “These five grandkids are so very special to me. I look forward to
anytime I can spend with them” she commented.
Heraldine worked for Kasten Hardware Hank
in Ettrick for 23 years, until October 2001. She
is currently employed at Howard’s Hardware
Hank in Arcadia for the past 9 years. “The
Kastens and Howards have been mentors for
me, I’ve learned so much about the hardware
business from them” she said. She is the manager of Howard’s Rental Department, and is a
member of UDAC Plumbing Committee for
United Hardware, the provider of Hardware
Hank plumbing products. Heraldine is a volunteer for the Chippewa Valley Chapter of The
American Red Cross for nearly 20 years, and
coordinates blood bank days in Ettrick. A
Charter Member of the Ettrick Jaycees and
Ettrick Businessmen’s Association until both
groups dissolved, she maintains an active role as
a volunteer for the Lions Club’s annual “Fun
Days” Celebration for the past 25 years.
Additionally, Heraldine is involved with the
fund raising walks for the American Diabetes
Association.
Despite her full-time employment and volunteer activities, she has maintained her 13 year
role as an area Avon representative, and has
been the Number 1 Sales Person in her district
HERALDINE “DEANIE” ROMMEL,
chosen Outstanding Citizen
for Ettrick’s 2010 Fun Days Celebration
for the past 6 years.
An avid collector of copper knick knacks, she
also has many rosemaled items and over 200
bells decorating her home. “I also like to bowl,
and started when the TranHaus opened in 1979.
My gardening now is mostly flowers, as the time
required for my vegetables has evaporated” she
quipped. Heraldine also loves to bike, and has
delivered hundreds of her Avon orders with her
bike. The Rommel’s are members of the South
Beaver Creek Lutheran Church.
When asked her reaction to receiving this
award, she said “I was very surprised to be
selected for this honor. When we moved to
Ettrick in 1973 we didn’t know anyone in town,
but were made to feel very welcome almost
immediately. It’s easy to help when something
needs to be done. Everyone in Ettrick is your
friend. I love Ettrick, it’s a great community to
live and work in and to raise a family. I thank
everyone for their support”, she concluded.
The public is invited to attend the ceremonies
on Thursday, August 26th at 7 p.m. at the Ettrick
Community Center, and show their support
throughout the week-end at “Fun Days”.
