NETIQUETTE
What is “Netiquette”? Simply put it is “Internet Etiquette” or the conventions of politeness
pertaining to e-mail and technology use. Online communication is different from that of the
face-to-face world, with its own unique customs and practices, and misunderstandings can easily
arise.
For learn@home K-7, we use a list serve a lot, as it is both fast and convenient. Please remember
that when you respond to the list serve, everyone will see your message. As with any
community, there are guidelines governing behavior on the list serve. For instance, libeling
others, posting controversial or inflammatory topics (or topics not relevant to the group's
purpose) and selling or marketing are not permissible. Please take a moment to acquaint yourself
with these important guidelines. If you have questions, contact me. SD68 reserves the right to
suspend or terminate membership on all lists for members who violate these rules.
List Serve Guidelines
· Do not challenge or attack others. The discussions on the lists are meant to stimulate conversation, not
to create contention. Let others have their say, just as you may.
· Do not post commercial messages. The cyberspace term for this is spamming. Contact people directly
with products and services that you believe would help them.
· Use caution when discussing products. Information posted on the lists is available for all to see, and
comments are subject to libel, slander, and antitrust laws.
· All defamatory, abusive, profane, threatening, offensive, or illegal materials are strictly prohibited. Do
not post anything in a list serve message that you would not want the world to see or that you would
not want anyone to know came from you.
· Remember that email list participants have the right to reproduce postings to this list serve.
List Serve Etiquette
· Include a signature tag on all messages; e.g. name and email address.
Although our SD68 list serve is automatically set to reply to the sender, you may need to remind others
to reply to you rather than the whole community.
· State concisely and clearly the specific topic of the comments in the subject line. This allows members
to respond more appropriately to your posting and makes it easier for members to search the archives
by subject.
· Include only the relevant portions of the original message in your reply, delete any header information,
and put your response before the original posting.
· Only send a message to the entire list when it contains information that everyone can benefit from.
· Send messages such as "thanks for the information" or "me, too" to individuals--not to the entire list.
Do this by using your email application's forwarding option and typing in or cutting and pasting in the
email address of the individual to whom you want to respond.
· Warn other list subscribers of lengthy messages either in the subject line or at the beginning of the
message body with a line that says "Long Message."
· Please proofread your message and look for any areas that might be misunderstood.
· Keep your message to the point, but be clear and polite. Remember - people do not like to read large
amounts of text.
· Set up your "out of office" replies correctly. Set them so they only respond to messages that are
directed specifically to your email address.
By utilizing the list serve, you are accepting the list serve rules stated above.
