Team Lendlease Runs in the 2016 New York City Marathon

Team Lendlease Runs in the 2016 New York City Marathon
(New York, NY, November 7, 2016) Lendlease, one of the world’s largest development,
property, infrastructure and construction management firms, is pleased to announce that
45 employees from across Lendlease’s global operations (US, Australia, Europe and
Asia) ran in this year’s New York City Marathon.
Lendlease Americas CEO, Denis Hickey stated, “Once I learned about the Team for Kids
mission, I asked for volunteers from around Lendlease’s global operations to run in the
NYC marathon. What came together was a group of highly motivated Lendlease runners
willing to take on the challenge of one of toughest and most beautiful marathons in the
world while helping to raise money for kids in need.”
Team for Kids funds help support programs for more than 200,000 children in more than
1,000 schools and community centers nationwide. Since 2002, Team for Kids members
have raised more than $40 million dollars. Funding helps pay for training for teachers and
coaches, most of whom are volunteers, program and practice supplies, and student
incentives.
Prior to the marathon on November 4 at Lendlease’s New York office, guest speaker
John Maclean, a former Australian Rugby player and now the most sought after
motivational speaker from Australia visited with the runners and staff. Mr. Maclean told
his life story about how during fitness training near his hometown in June 1988, he was hit
by a truck as he rode his bike. The impact resulted in John suffering multiple breaks to his
pelvis and back, a fractured sternum, punctured lungs, a broken arm, and left him a
paraplegic.
Despite the grief of what he had lost, the excruciating physical pain and the challenges of
daily life in a wheelchair, John decided he would become bigger and stronger than ever.
In 1995, John made history by becoming the first wheelchair athlete to finish the course at
world's toughest multi-discipline sporting event – the Hawaii Ironman Triathlon. In
September 2007, he and his rowing partner claimed a silver medal at the Rowing World
Championships, and followed up with a gold medal at the International Regatta in Italy in
April 2008. John and his partner won a silver medal at the 2008 Beijing Paralympic
Games for Rowing.
Mr. Maclean delivered a passionate and motivational speech to Lendlease’s New York
staff and team participants of the marathon about trials and tribulations of overcoming any
obstacles in their way of completing a goal. After the motivational speech, runners were
given their Lendlease jerseys and a signed copy of John’s book, How Far Can You Go?
Today, John can walk with help of state-of-the-art leg braces and has most recently
completed numerous 5K walks in Australia raising funds for multiple charities.

provided to our team of runners. I know after hearing John speak, I am motivated to take
on challenges in my life and I believe that all the Lendlease staff who heard John speak
have a new outlook on overcoming difficult circumstances in their lives,” stated Hickey.
