Hispanic Heritage Month
Alejandra Cohen, Addison Ogonoski, Julia Riew, Jeremy Smith and Tyler Waterman shared a brief
presentation celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month, which just ended. “This is a great opportunity to
appreciate how people from all over the Hispanic world, ranging from Argentina to Spain, have
influenced and enriched our own society. … There are over 25 nations or territories where Spanish is
spoken as a main or an official language. … The rich culture of Spanish-speakers has had a profound
influence on culture in the United States [where] 50.5 million or 16 percent of the population are of
Hispanic or Latino origin. … Due to the large amount of Hispanic people migrating into the U.S., there
have been many foods from their countries that have come along with them (paella, empanadas,
alfajores, etc.). … Many aspects of Hispanic culture have been brought to the United States and are
celebrated by people across the nation (such as El Dia de los Muertos and Cinco de Mayo). … We can
see other important aspects of the Hispanic culture throughout our country in the form of music
(Shakira and Marc Anthony), art (Frida Kahlo and Salvador Dali) and prominent personalities (George
Lopez, Sonia Sotomayor and Yadier Molina).”
