Prayer at a Child's First Communion
Lord Jesus Christ, in the Sacrament of the Eucharist, You left us the outstanding manifestation
of your limitless love for us. Thank You for giving our child the opportunity to experience this
love in receiving the Sacrament for the first time. May your Eucharistic presence keep
him/her ever free from sin, fortified in faith, pervaded by love for God and neighbor, and
fruitful in virtue, that he/she may continue to receive You throughout this beautiful life’s
journey. Amen.

Classroom Highlights
Embracing the Old and New, and a Little Fun, Too
- Mrs. Joanna Samija - Middle School Mathematics
In Middle School Math at HFGS, students cover all of the Common Core State Standards. In
Mrs. Samija's class, sometimes they also cover the "Mrs. Samija Standard" that math can be fun
too! Recently, students have been working with Geometry concepts, and in a spirit of "learning
by doing," they have been measuring using a traditional ruler. Sixth grade, as an introduction
to their unit in Geometry, measured various quadrilaterals to determine the perimeter. Eighth
grade students measured everyday objects such as canned food or a container of oatmeal to
calculate and determine volume of cylinders. By working with a simple, traditional tool such as
a ruler, students gained an understanding of length and how changes in dimension can affect
the overall volume of an object.

Along with the traditional method, students also access educational apps on their iPads, and
recently students have been "learning by playing" with tangrams. Tangrams are ancient
Chinese dissection puzzles where geometric shapes must be placed into a given silhouette. It is
a puzzle that seems easy at first, but can be quite challenging. Middle school math students
have enjoyed working in a collaborative spirit to solve the puzzles both on their individual iPads
and on Mrs. Samija's iPad connected to the projector so that many students may work together
to solve the tricky logic puzzles. By incorporating both old techniques and new technology,
middle school math students at HFGS are learning, and having a bit of fun too!

HFGS’ Sculptured Ideas Are Coming!
After reducing, recycling, and reusing, we challenge all our families to PLANT a TREE this week
or next weekend! Send a photo of your child (with you, brother, sister, or friend) to your
child’s Science teacher.
Earth Day 2016 — Trees for the Earth
Let’s get planting. Over the next five years, as Earth Day moves closer to its 50th anniversary,
the Earth Day Network is calling on us to help achieve one of their most ambitious goals yet —
planting 7.8 billion trees and we’re starting now.
Trees will be the first of five major goals Earth Day Network is undertaking in honor of the fiveyear countdown to their 50th anniversary. On your own and together, these initiatives will
make a significant and measurable impact on the Earth and will serve as the foundation of a
cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable planet for all.
Why Trees?
Trees help combat climate change.
They absorb excess and harmful CO2 from our atmosphere. In fact, in a single year, an acre of
mature trees absorbs the same amount of CO2 produced by driving the average car 26,000
miles.
Trees help us breathe clean air.
Trees absorb odors and pollutant gases (nitrogen oxides, ammonia, sulfur dioxide and ozone)
and filter particulates out of the air by trapping them on their leaves and bark.
Trees help communities.
Trees help communities achieve long-term economic and environmental sustainability and
provide food, energy, and income.
Let’s plant trees, HFGS!
