Solving Systems by Linear Combinations (Elimination)





Align the equations so that like variables are together.
Make the coefficients of one variable the same, but opposite signs.
Eliminate a variable by adding like variables (except in special cases).
Solve for the remaining variable.
Substitute the value of the variable into one of the original equations, and solve for the remaining
variable.
Examples: Solve each system by elimination. Identify whether the lines are intersecting, parallel or
coincident.
