Vol 19 Issue 2 Fun Earth Day Celebration Keep Pearland Beautiful partnered with the City of Pearland to host the 20th Annual Earth Day Celebration on April 23, 2016. With over 750 in attendance, the Earth Day Celebration focused on environmental education with vendors teaching about services, products and actions to implement a healthier and more sustainable lifestyle, while conserving natural resources. This free event featured activities for kids, local food vendors, outdoor yoga, the Zoomobile, and information about ways to be a part of the solution and become more environmentally conscious. As a part of the Earth Day Celebration KPB hosted the KIPPERS Awards Breakfast, celebrating all of the hard work accomplished by middle school aged children, participating in this after school environmental club. Awards were handed out to the Top Young En- vironmentalists at each school including Carter Hart, Chanelle Chandler, Caitlyn Marquez, Alexa Casigne and Kevin Keeping. We want to especially thank our KIPPERS sponsors Marty Gibson, Brittany Suarez, Chris Junco, Greta LaFleur, Melissa Bonner, Amber Bennett, Judy Parsons, Karen Christensen, Tracy Doody, Sharon Whitener and Jackie Singleton. The Recycled Runway Fashion Show was another great attraction at Earth Day, with 3 groups and 4 individuals competing to out-design their peers with clothing created from recycled materials and materials destined for the landfill. Tonisha Whyte stole the show with her dress, “Mirrors Edge”, made from paper and compact discs. Designers worked for weeks to complete their outfits utilizing materials ranging from plastic bottles to playing cards. KPB thanks our emcees for the fashion show Monique Wiltz and Meagan Flowers, Summer 2016 with a special thanks to Traci Williams for helping coordinate the event. The first Earth Day was celebrated nationally on April 22, 1970 and led to the creation of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act and the Endangered Species Act. On Earth Day 2016, the landmark Paris agreement was signed by 175 countries to help fight the relentless rise in global temperatures. The agreement will enter into force once 55 countries representing at least 55 percent of global emissions have formally joined. The landmark Paris agreement is only productive if countries that sign the agreement ratify the agreement and put into effect controls to reduce carbon output. Although Earth Day is typically celebrated around April 22 we should remember that every day is Earth Day! The annual Pocket Pear fundraiser benefits the Joe Miller Environmental Scholarship Fund, which awards scholarships to Pearland area high school seniors who have demonstrated good stewardship of the environment and are pursuing higher education. An active community member for over 20 years, Joe Miller devoted his free time to volunteering with groups such as Keep Pearland Beautiful and the Boy Scouts of America. For fun, he was an avid poker player, going “all in” with the Lakes of Highland Glen Poker Club. KPB established this scholarship fund in 2008 in his memory. In 8 years, a total of $45,000 has been awarded to 33 high school seniors. This year, scholarships totalling $10,000 have been awarded to six high school graduates from Pearland, Dawson and Turner High School. Congratulations to PHS scholarship winners Madison Segovia and Kenesha Williams, DHS scholarship winners Jessica Huang, Nathaniel Thompson and Nikhil Chellam, and THS scholarship winner Anusia Mansukhani. Previous scholarship winners, Vanessa Alejandro and Sharon Li, have both cofounded non-profit organizations. Vanessa Alejandro cofounded Warriors of the Wild, an organization that has utilized 14 volunteers to educate over 4,000 students via field trips and skits about science and the environment. She won a scholarship in 2011 and attended the University of Houston. Sharon Li cofounded the LiFT Initiative (Life for Technology Initiative) in 2008. Her organization has collected over 170 electronic items and recycled over 2,800 pounds. They also take used electronics and refurbish them, donating to students in orphanages and impoverished cities or villages. She is working with teams in Texas, New York and California to set up these programs across the nation. She was awarded a scholarship in 2015. Make sure to purchase your tickets to the Pocket Pear today and help educate other Pearland students who will change the world. Wilder students collected 32,398. York students collected 52,950 bags. Representatives from H-E-B Plus! Pearland picked up the plastic bags that were packed into 55 gallon garbage bags. Plastic bags and other plastic films are recyclable but not in your recycling cart or at the recycling center. This category of plastics includes shopping bags, dry cleaner bags and the plastic film that wraps your paper products like toilet paper and paper towels. Just stuff them all in one bag and drop off at a local retailer like Walmart, HEB or Krogers. Keep Pearland Beautiful commends both schools for doing such an amazing job keeping plastic bags out of the landfill. Keep Pearland Beautiful strives to make Pearland the cleanest and most beautiful city in Texas. In keeping with our mission, KPB hosted the Don’t Mess With Texas Trash-Off on April 2nd at the Stella Roberts Recycling Center. Since that date 403 volunteers have spent 592 hours picking up 124 bags of trash and 2,412 cigarette butts. This cleanup is a signature event of our Adopt-A-Spot program that is comprised of 74 groups, each responsible for cleaning a 1-mile stretch. Knowing that 1 in 4 Texans admit to littering gives KPB more reason than ever to educate the community and arrange community wide cleanups in an effort to raise awareness about litter in Pearland. People litter for several reasons including habit, feeling that it’s someone else’s problem and the fact that litter begets litter. Please do your part to help us fight the war on litter by participating in our Fall Community Cleanup on September 10, 2016. Our theme for this event is ‘Pitch in Pearland put litter in its place!’ Thank you to ALL of the KPB Volunteers you are the BEST! 6 2016 Earth Day Celebration 7 Keep Pearland Beautiful Non-Profit U.S. Postage PAID Permit #59 Pearland, TX 5800 Magnolia Pearland, TX 77584 281-489-2795 www.mykpb.org We have moved!
