Iowa, and Camp Pike, Ark. Assigned to Company H, 9th Infantry. Overseas in June, 1918; attached to
Second Division. Wounded July 18, 1918, at Chateau-Thierry, and died August 6, 1918, in Base Hospital
No. 1, France. Buried near Paris, France.
BEACH, HOBART GEORGE (Private) Son of John and Freda Biel Beach; born September 11, 1896, New
Albany, Ind. Farmer. Enlisted in Troop D, 1st Cavalry, Indiana National Guard, May 9, 1917, New Albany,
Ind. Sent to Camp Shelby, Miss.; assigned to Replacement Draft. Went overseas June 12, 1918; assigned
to Company H, 168th Infantry, 42nd (Rainbow) Division. Wounded in action July 29, 1918, and died
August 17, 1918, in hospital near Paris, France. Buried in American Cemetery, Suresnes, Seine, France.

Albany, Ind. Clerk. Entered service April 5, 1918, Champaign, Ill. Trained at Camp Dodge, Iowa, Camp
Grant, Ill., and Camp Sherman, Ohio. Assigned to Company M, 131st Infantry, 33rd (Prairie) Division.
Embarked from Hoboken, N.J. May 22, 1918. Killed in action August 18, 1918, Briey, France. Buried in
American Cemetery No. 443, Vaux sur Somme, Grave 18, Plot 1.

Harrison County, Ind. Cabinetmaker. Entered service March 11, 1918, New Albany, Ind. Trained at Camp
Taylor, Ky.; assigned to Company G, 59th Infantry, 4th Division. Embarked from Hoboken, N.J. May 5,
1918. Participated in battles of Chateau-Thierry, and Argonne Forest. Killed in action August 11, 1918.

Living in Floyd-Knobs, Floyd County, Ind., when he entered service on November 28, 1918, New York
City. Sent to Montauk, L.I.. Assigned to Naval Air Station as Chaplain of Knights of Columbus. Died of
influenza January 25, 1919, Base Hospital, Montauk, L.I. Buried in Jersey City, N.J.

GELTMAKER, JAMES BENJAMIN (Private) Son of Mr. and Mrs. William Geltmaker; born July 5, 1897,

GEYSER, ALBERT EDWIN (Private, S.A.T.C.) Son of Henry and Emma Geyser; born May 22, 1893,
Louisville, Ky. Electrician. Called into service October 15, 1918, New Albany, Ind. Entered Student Army
Training Corps, Rolling Prairie, Ind., and was assigned to Company A, Motor Truck Service. Died of
pneumonia October 29, 1918, Rolling Prairie, Ind. Buried in Fairview Cemetery, New Albany, Ind.
GREGOIRE, GEORGE EDGAR (K. of C. Secretary) Son of John and Mary Gregoire; born December 15,
1883, New Albany, Ind. Salesman. Volunteered as Knights of Columbus Secretary August, 1918, New
York City, but was delayed in being sent overseas until October of the same year, because of trouble in
procuring his passport. Left New Albany for New York, and died of influenza October 21, 1918, in St.
Vincent’s Hospital, New York City. Buried in Holy Trinity Cemetery, New Albany, Ind.
GUERNSEY, FLOYD HAWS (Apprentice Seaman) Son of Albert Sherman and Lelia Haws Guernsey; born
April 28, 1897, Jeffersonville, Clark County, Ind. Later moved to New Albany, Ind. Clerk, Louisville and
Nashville Railroad. Entered U. S. Navy July 22, 1918, Louisville, Ky. Sent to Great Lakes Naval Training
Station, Yeoman School, Ill., where he died of influenza, September 23, 1918. Buried in Walnut Ridge
Cemetery, Jeffersonville, Ind.
HARDWAY, MEDDIE (Colored) (Private) Son of William Hardway; born January 18, 1890, Gracey, Ky.
Living in New Albany, Ind., where he entered service August 23, 1918. Sent to Camp Dodge, Iowa;
assigned to 69th Company, 18th Provisional Training Battalion, 163rd Depot Brigade. Transferred to
Company E, 809th Pioneer Infantry. Went overseas September 23, 1918. Died of influenza October 5,

to Camp McClellan, Ala.; assigned to 2nd Truck Company, 9th Ammunition Train; later to Motor
Battalion, 9th Ammunition Train. Died of pneumonia October 24, 1918, Camp McClellan, Ala. Buried in
Methodist Cemetery, Galena, Ind.
MILLER, LAWRENCE RAYMOND (Private) Son of Charles R. and Mattie Zurschmiede Miller; born July 29,
1897, New Albany, Ind. Clerk. Enlisted in U.S. Regular Army October 24, 1917, Ft. Thomas, Ky. Sent to Ft.
Omaha, Neb.; assigned to Company D, 4th Balloon Squadron. Transferred to Camp Morrison, Va.;
assigned to 9th Balloon Company. Overseas in June, 1918. Died of effects of gas, and influenza April 11,
1919, in Green Hut Hospital, New York City. Buried in Fairview Cemetery, New Albany, Ind.
MOORE, WILLIAM AUGUST (Private) Son of Ruben and Louisa Moore; born April 6, 1888, New Albany,
Ind. Laborer. Called into service March 4, 1918, New Albany, Ind. Trained at Columbus Barracks, Ohio;
assigned to Coast Artillery Corps. Died of heart trouble from nervous shock, March 9, 1918, at Columbus
Barracks, Ohio. Buried in Fairview Cemetery, New Albany, Ind.

20, 1897, Elizabeth, Harrison County, Ind. Farmer. Called into service September 5, 1918, Corydon, Ind.

RICHARDSON, HENRY W. (Colored) (Private) Son of Henry and Addie R. Richardson; born August 25,
1887, Lexington, Ky. Laborer. Entered service April 29, 1918, New Albany, Ind. Assigned to 317th Labor
Battalion, Quartermaster Corps. Killed by an explosive on board transport, July 10, 1918. Government
record says, “Died of pneumonia.” (Place of burial not known.)
RUDY, CHARLES THOMAS (Naval Aviator) Son of William and Julia Rudy; born June 11, 1894, Bellevue,
Ky. Removed to New Albany, Ind. in 1901. Bank employe, Louisville, Ky. Enlisted in U.S. Navy November
10, 1917, Louisville, Ky. Sent to Pensacola, Fla.; assigned to Naval Aviation, Machinist Mate. Sailed for
France, February 2, 1918. Died of pneumonia September 18, 1918, Base Hospital, St. Trojan, France.

SHERMAN, CLYDE THOMAS (Private) Son of Clyde and Elsie Chambers Sherman; born September 30,
1891, Mauckport, Harrison County, Ind. Steamboat clerk. Entered service September 20, 1917, New
Albany, Ind. Sent to Camp Taylor, Ky. Transferred to Camp Sevier, S.C.; assigned to Company K, 120th
Infantry, 30th Division. Embarked May 17, 1918. Killed in action near Bellecourt, September 28, 1918.
Buried in American Cemetery. Survived by widow, Alma Sherman, and daughter, Alma Aletha Sherman,
New Albany, Ind.
SLOAN, BONNIE MERECHAL (Private) Son of Yenowine and Alice Livingston Sloan; born March 25, 1896,
near Edwardsville, Ind. Molder. Enlisted in U.S. Regular Army July 1, 1917, Ft. Thomas, Ky.; assigned to
Battery D, 15th Field Artillery. Transferred to Pine Camp, N.Y. Overseas in December, 1917. Killed in
action June 24, 1918, Chateau-Thierry. Buried in Cemetery No. 246, Domptin, France. The first Floyd
County boy to give his life for his country. The Floyd County American Legion Post is named in his honor.
SLOAN, MORGAN WILLIAM (Private) Son of Mr. and Mrs. Sherman Sloan; born October 26, 1897, New
Albany, Ind. Farmer. Enlisted in Troop D, 1st Cavalry, Indiana National Guard, August 5, 1917, New
Albany, Ind. Sent to Camp Shelby, Miss.; assigned to Company M, 152nd Infantry, 38th Division.
