Michigan/Canada center
STEP assists qualifying Michigan companies with
export sales strategy. The program has been
developed to:
• Increase the dollar value of Michigan exports
• Expand the number of Michigan companies that
export
• Introduce current exporters to new foreign markets
and buyers
Canada is the largest export
market for Michigan companies,
with over $25 billion in goods
exported in 2012. Michigan
joined the Michigan/Canada
Center, located in Toronto, to
help companies research, identify
and capitalize on market opportunities in a broad
range of industry sectors across Canada. Exports
to Canada include transportation equipment and
machinery, oil and gas, primary metal manufacturing,
among others.
STEP was launched in 2011 by the U.S. Small Business
Administration (SBA) as part of the president’s National
Export Initiative with a goal to double U.S. exports and
give America a stronger competitive edge.
International trade offices
Michigan Export Program
Global trade is responsible for thousands of jobs
in Michigan and is helping grow companies and
our economy. The Michigan Export Program gives
businesses the tools they need to become globally
competitive, while helping businesses that already export
goods and services raise the value of their products and
expand their territory.
The program is designed to:
• Increase awareness of export opportunities and
resources
• Provide business strategy to reach international buyers
• Help small businesses compete effectively in multiple
markets
• Generate increased sales and expand the Michigan
workforce
• Provide financial assistance to qualifying companies
The MEDC offers a comprehensive resource to identify
and determine key markets and provides assistance
in all areas of the export process. The MEDC has
international trade offices available to help companies
enter and expand into foreign markets. The MEDC also
offers specific programs tailored to support all types
of business export needs. For more information, visit

State Trade Export Program (STEP)
In addition to STEP, the MEDC has four foreign offices
through a partnership with the Council of Great Lakes
Governors (CGLG). These centers provide export
trade development services to small and mediumsized companies interested in expanding their sales
to Brazil, Canada, China and Mexico.
Michigan/Brazil center
Brazil is a growing market for
Michigan companies, with export
sales increasing significantly
over the last five years due to a
sharp rise in Brazil’s purchasing
power. Michigan recently joined
the Brazil trade office of the
CGLG to meet increased demand for Michigan-made
products and services. The center provides access
to market research and assistance in identifying
export opportunities from a broad range of industry
sectors. Exports include transportation equipment and
machinery, medical devices, agriculture, information
technology and many other Michigan products.
Located in Shanghai, the
Michigan/China Center provides
a physical presence for Michigan
and offers an experienced export
services staff in collaboration
with CGLG. The center opened
in September 2012 to expand
the partnership and business opportunities between
Michigan and China. The center provides export trade
development support for companies looking to break
into China. Opportunities exist in the following industry
sectors: transportation equipment and machinery,
primary metal manufacturing, chemicals, waste and
scrap, and computer and electronic products.
