Hanging Wall Art at Riverside Arts Center

Hanging Wall Art at Riverside Arts Center
We use the Walker Hanging System in our gallery. We do not hang with nails except for extreme
circumstances dealing with very unique situations and art pieces.
All wall art must be wired for hanging. Depending on the size of the art, the wire then fits over one of
these two hooks.
The hooks slide up and down the rod for correct height and are tightened with the side screw.
We use the hanging rod as shown on the right.
Wiring a Frame
Metal frames generally come with the metal frame hangers that have tightening screws in them. For
wood frames, there are a variety of hangers for each frame side to run wire through. Or if you have
canvas stretched over a frame, you can also use screw eye hangers.
The wire should be ¼ to 1/3 down from the top of the frame. The wire should not be so long, loose, or
high that the hanging hook can be seen above the artwork. The hanging hooks need to stay behind the art
piece. Below is a very good video clip that shows proper frame wiring. Please take a couple minutes to
watch.

Wiring Metal Frames
With metal frames there are not a lot of
options. And the hangers are usually included
with the frames.
Wiring Wood Frames
Choose a hanger for a wood frame based on its size
and weight.
Wiring with Screw Eyes
This is the oldest method of wiring art and is actually no longer recommended by many framers as a
secure hanging method. Screw Eyes can be pulled out of the frame. This often happens when the chosen
screw eye is too small for the weight of the artwork and frame.
Screw Eyes are often used with canvas frames. They are usually placed on the inside edge of the frame to
help give a flatter hanging appearance.
Please take the time to do proper wiring.
Do not take short cuts with your artwork in this area. Take the time to learn how to complete this part of
the art process and do it with the same care and concerns as you do with all the other steps that pertain to
your art.
Thank you!
