attended high school in Buffalo, NY and
later studied architecture at t h e
Massachusetts Inst, of Technology. In
1898 he opened an architectural office in
San Francisco, and became a close friend
and painting partner of Arthur and Lucia
Mathews. Most of his watercolors were
landscapes, sizes 20" x 26". As an
architect he designed many of SF's major
buildings: St Francis Hotel, Bank of
America, American Trust Company, State
Building in Civic Center, Southern Pacific
Building, and the Geary Theatre; as well as
the Oakland Public Library and Hotel
Oakland. He died on Dec. 15, 1947 at his
Sausalito home. Member: Bohemian Club;

in 1840. After graduating from the New
Hampton Inst, and Thetford Academy, she
married E. W. Farr in 1861. After the death
of her husband she had a studio in Boston
until the early 1880s when she moved to
southern Calif. Mrs. Farr bought an old
vineyard in 1895 after settling in Pasadena
and built a mission style studio on the
property where she painted still lifes and
scenes of the missions. Exhibited: Calif.

FARRELL, Margaret C. Taylor (18831972). Portrait painter. Margaret Taylor
studied at the AIC under Ralph Clarkson
and in Cincinnati under Duveneck. After
settling in Los Angeles sometime before
1912, she opened a studio, exhibited
locally, and appears to have married about
1920. She died in Sacramento on Sept. 7,

FARRINGTON,

Portrait painter, sculptor, illustrator. Born
in Dwight, III. in 1913. Farrington moved to
Oakland, CA with her family in 1914 and
had settled in Los Angeles by 1924. During
the 1930s she studied at the AIC, Otis Art
Inst, and with George Stanley. Member:

(1867). Painter. Born in Atchinson,
Kan. on March 1, 1867. Faust attended the
School of Design for Women in Philadelphia
and the PAFA. She appears to have
settled in Inglewood, CA in the 1920s.
Primarily a portraitist, she also painted
landscapes and coastals.

FAY, Jean Bradford (1904- ). Painter,
illustrator, cartoonist. Born in Seattle,
Wash, on April 22, 1904. Fay was a
resident of San Francisco in the 1930s1940s and a pupil of Lyonel Feininger at
Mills College (Oakland). Member: SF

FAY, Nellie (1870). Painter. Born in
Eureka, CA on Feb. 11,1870. When in her
teens Fay began art training in San
Francisco under Emil Carlsen at the School
of Design, and later with Arthur Mathews.
After her art studies she moved to
Sacramento and became active with the
Kingsley Art Club. In 1915 she returned to
San Francisco where she was a resident
until at least 1935. After that time her trail
is lost. Member: SFAA; SF Sketch Club.
