Life is fun
at Cherry Trees
A highlight of the Summer for the Cherry Trees family was the trip to
Chessington World of Adventure kindly sponsored by Merlin Magic Wand.
This was the most wonderful day and all the Cherry Trees children together with
their parents, siblings and carers were invited for a truly unforgettable outing.
Celebrating
YEARS at CHERRY TREES
PAULA RANKIN
Deputy Head of Care
Well it happened – I don’t know how and I don’t know when but its official
I’ve been here 25 YEARS!
What does Cherry Trees
mean to me?
Strength – as we continue to grow
in this uncertain world.
Warmth – because that is what
you feel as you enter the building.
Unpredictability – no two days
are the same, no two children are
ever the same.
Support – because when the
unpredictability strikes the team
who work with the children and
the team that work behind the
scenes are always there to
support and guide.
Unity – well I have narrowed the
north/south divide a little..!!!
To commemorate this achievement or
to just embarrass me and make me
squirm, a gathering of current staff,
past parents, young people and the
person who gave me the opportunity
to join Cherry Trees, saw my potential
and taught me most of what I now
know – Gina, the past Head of Care,
took place. After managing to turn me
scarlet with embarrassment and make
me shed a tear I was given a fabulous
scrap book with photos and messages
from people I’ve worked with over
my quarter of a century – yes I cried
again!! I was given the most beautiful
Cherry Tree for my new garden (how
convenient to now have a garden –
sounds like some planning went into
this???) From the trustees a stunning
silver photo frame that is engraved.
Yes I was truly spoilt and I’d like to
take this opportunity to say a massive
thank you to everyone.
Some things have changed so much –
the building, the facilities, the children
and the staff but one thing remains
(other than me) everyone’s passion
for Cherry Trees. Everyone’s desire
that the children receive what they
want, deserve and need.
Many of you know that I moved down
to the south aged eighteen, so in
theory I’ve been a southerner longer
than I was a northerner. Although I
have my family up north I now have
a family down south. My ‘southern’
family are made up of friends who
have at some time worked at Cherry
Trees or still do. You see that’s the
thing about this place once you’re
through the door it gets under your
skin – it’s like the song by The Eagles,
Hotel California ‘You can check out
anytime you want BUT you can
never leave.’
Now please don’t think the north is ‘off
the hook’ because they are not. The
support that comes down the M6 is
always amazing – Christmas cards,
notelets – you are nobody unless
you’ve received a Cherry Trees pack
of notelets from my mum. Unexpected
acts of generosity from friends of the
family are all wonderful and so very
welcome and appreciated.
Don’t just take our word for it!
This is what the
parents say –
My daughter loves going
to the home. I think she
feels grown up and enjoys
the experience and is
benefitting greatly from
doing something just for
herself like any teenager
We owe a lot to Cherry
Trees. We shall do whatever
we can in our capacity to
support Cherry Trees. Long
live Cherry Trees!
WHAT DOES OFSTED SAY
ABOUT CHERRY TREES?
The Cherry Trees family all know what a happy
and wonderful place Cherry Trees is and how
much it benefits both young children and
their families but at the recent Ofsted visit we
were delighted to be rated “Outstanding” for
outcomes which means how the visits affect
the children. Leadership qualities and friendly
atmosphere at Cherry Trees were also highly
commended. Peter Davey Head of Care said
“Everything we do at Cherry Trees is for the
children, young people and their families and to
receive the assurance from Ofsted that we are
doing it to an outstanding level is heartening.”
Cherry Trees is my extended family
Cherry Trees is invaluable
– it provides a safe, happy
and caring environment for
many children with varying
needs. It gives us carers
a well needed break, safe
in the knowledge that our
children are well cared for.
We really can’t find the words to
express what this extended break
means to us but suffice to say it is much
needed and very much appreciated that
everyone at CT works so hard to make
such a break happen for us – Thank you
She loves going to Cherry Trees and I think
she feels quite grown up and enjoys the
experience and is benefitting greatly from
doing something just for her that does not
involve us – just like any 16 year old
AND MOST IMPORTANTLY WHAT DO THE CHILDREN SAY?
I like coming to the home
because it makes me feel
happy and safe. I make
more friendships because
I meet new children.
If Katie was asked to
pick her favourite thing in
the whole wide world, she
would without doubt say
Cherry Trees.
You have fun when you
are at Cherry Trees
– the staff are really
kind and helpful, they are
there when you need them.
3
A year at Ch
2014 has been even busier and more
action packed than usual at Cherry Trees
Our dedicated staff backed by
our team of trusted volunteers
not only ensure that our children
are well cared for and have a
fantastic time here at Cherry
Trees but also help make sure
that our home runs smoothly, is
well maintained and that we have
sufficient funds. The children at
Cherry Trees are offered a world of
opportunities that may not normally
be available to them. For many of the
youngsters, having short breaks at
Cherry Trees, in addition to spending
time with their friends, allows
them to have experiences such as
“sleepovers” or 18th birthday treats
with friends that otherwise just would
not happen.
In addition to spending time with their
friends the children enjoyed a day on
the Isle of Wight, saw a production
at Head 2 Head Theatre, visited
Fishers Farm and Mizens Railway,
and participated in a cinema visit,
swimming and a visit to Secretts
Farm with as a real treat going to see
Alice the Musical at Hatchlands.
For those children who do not wish
to go out, entertainment is brought
to Cherry Trees and the summer
holidays saw Millers Ark Farm paying
visits with a wide variety of animals,
kindly sponsored by Harvey Jones
Kitchens, Guildford. Matt Dagworth,
Manager of the Guildford branch said:
“As a business that is at the heart of
the community, we want to do our bit
by trying to put a smile on as many of
the youngsters’ faces as possible”
There was also a fun packed sports
day with Marco the Clown who is a
firm supporter of Cherry Trees and
regular visitor. Drumming was a great
success as was the Art Hop and a
visit from the magician.
The summer holidays were no
exception and the children enjoyed
a wide range of activities and
experiences.
We are really proud that out of
31 days there were activities
planned either with visitors
coming to Cherry Trees or
trips out for 28 of these days.
4
Television presenter, Dave Benson
Phillips and Patron of Cherry Trees
entertained the children with his
catchy tunes and easy to remember
rhymes and the excitement among the
children was immense.

What Cherry Trees means to us
COLIN & ROSALIE McCARTHY
Mary is a beautiful lovely girl who
loves dancing. She is charming,
funny, very loveable, caring and
has a great sense of humour and
unbelievably has just turned 18.
Mary has Global Development Delay
and has been coming to Cherry Trees
for many months now.
Mary’s mother Rosalie said “Cherry
Trees gives us a break and allows
my husband and me to go out or stay
at home and just have time for each
other. The great thing about Cherry
Trees is that Mary can spend time
with people of her own age which is
really beneficial for her as she is an
only child and without Cherry Trees
would not have this opportunity. The
staff and volunteers are so kind and
for Mary’s 18th birthday they took her
and some friends to Ben and Jerry’s
in the town for ice cream to celebrate.
They all went in the Cherry Trees
minibus and had a wonderful time
and the best thing of all was that Mary
felt just like any other 18 year old
celebrating her special birthday with
friends.
Mary is at Pond Meadow School and
goes to Cherry Trees after school.
She loves going and we know that
it provides a safe, happy and caring
environment for our only daughter.
Thank you Cherry Trees – we appreciate all that you do!

VIVIENNE BIODYNAMIC MASSAGE
Did you know we have an experienced biodynamic
massage therapist that offers one-hour sessions
completely free at Cherry Trees every Tuesday from
9:15am to 5:15pm?
If you are not free on a Tuesday, Vivienne offers
sessions to Cherry Trees parents and carers at
her Guildford clinic at the concessionary rate of
£30 a session.
“How does Biodynamic massage differ
from other types of massage?”
Vivienne: “As a biodynamic massage therapist, I have
undergone three years of training, during which time I
received weekly biodynamic massages myself. This is
an exceptional training and unparalleled by any other
massage therapy.”
“How exactly does it work?”
Vivienne: “The client feels safe and supported to
explore the sensations of their body and to verbalise
the somatic experience of their emotions. For example,
I feel the sadness in a collapse in my chest that has
an aching around my heart. There’s tension in my left
shoulder, and my arms feel limp and heavy. And I feel
the pressure of tears behind my ears. Gradually, the
client becomes so good at noticing how their body feels
and at understanding their emotions that they become
more confident about how they feel and what they
want. They also learn how to take care of themselves
in their relationships.
Vivienne studied at the
Cambridge Centre of
Body Psychotherapy
and, as a trainee
psychotherapist,
she runs our Parents’
Support Group
every other week
at Cherry Trees.
She can be contacted
for bookings or
questions at [email protected]

Caring companies volunteer
and actively support Cherry Trees
Cherry Trees has been at the heart of the community it serves since it was founded in 1980. Volunteering is
essential to this very local charity that cares for Surrey children and young people with severe disabilities.
Many Surrey based organisations get involved not only with raising funds but also donating their time.
This year has been no exception.
Home Counties Carers Care Manager Ingrid Clift said
“As Cherry Trees is our neighbour we
felt it was a perfect opportunity to give
back to the community. We support
them by providing a friendly, reliable,
and trustworthy service, helping
out as we are needed. We love the
fun and positive attitude at Cherry
Trees. It is a wonderful charity and
it is a privilege to be helping such a
dynamic and well-run organisation!”
Porta Romana made Cherry Trees
their chosen charity. They have
supported us through their own
fundraising events, attending ours
and also through coming to Cherry
Trees and helping to decorate the
dining room. Jodie said “Although
we were giving our time to help the
charity, I feel that it is actually us
who should say thank you to them
for having us and for providing the
opportunity for a really worthwhile
and inspiring day.”
Tozer Seeds Ltd helped set up the
allotment this spring. The children
have been involved from planting
through to eating. There is even a
8
possibility of an apprenticeship at
Tozer Seeds for one of our young
men who through this project has
developed a love of gardening. Tozer
Seeds continue to support Cherry
Trees. Debbie Boulter said “We held
a party in October for the children and
they enjoyed carving home grown
pumpkins using Tozer seeds. We
are really grateful to Tozer and look
forward to another year of gardening
and fun!”
Staff from Unilever came in to help
maintain the much used gardens
and playgrounds. Charlie Long said
“It is good to help a local charity
and especially one as worthwhile
as Cherry Trees. We have really
enjoyed the experience and will
definitely be back!”
Threadneedle Investments UK
sent a team of staff to do painting
and gardening for which we are most
appreciative. Threadneedle also enter
a team annually for the Cherry Trees
Charity Golf Day.
Electronic Arts Ltd in Guildford are
great supporters of Cherry Trees.
They provide donations from Game
Sales, and a Christmas present for
every child. They also supply Easter
eggs! EA have just donated lots of
new computer games for use by our
older children in the Den. Michelle
Rendall said “The staff at EA are
delighted to help Cherry Trees. It is
such a worthwhile local charity and
very close to our hearts. We know
that every bit of support we offer to
the charity makes a real difference
and that is why we do it.”
families. With our business being
intrinsically involved with homes,
we saw a particular connection’.
Thank you to iCS Communications
who have made Cherry Trees their
chosen charity of the year for 2015.
Eagle Radio have supported us
for many years and are particularly
generous to the children at Cherry
Trees at Easter and Christmas
providing Easter Eggs and presents in
abundance. We are really grateful for
their continued support.
Taylor Wimpey South Thames
Peter Cook Commercial Director said
“We were pleased to choose Cherry
Trees as the deserved beneficiary
of a number of our charity events in
2014 which culminated in our recent
annual golf day attended by a large
number of our generous contractors
and suppliers. At this event alone we
were delighted to raise the sum of
£8,331 which when added to earlier
fund raising activities amounts to a
figure in excess of £10k. When we
decided earlier this year to choose
a charity to be the beneficiary of our
fund raising activities, we felt that as
a local based service offering respite
care for children and young people
with severe learning and physical
disabilities, and being a service that
has provided excellent support in the
past by a member of our staff team,
it was a great choice to make.”
Thank you to Seafare Fish and
Chips – Worplesdon for holding a
charity day in aid of Cherry Trees.
Colgate Palmolive have supported
Cherry Trees over the years and sent
in a team of employees to help paint
some of the bedrooms at Cherry
Trees. The rooms now look very
cheerful and we are very grateful!
Thanks to the gardening team as well!
National Estate Agents JacksonStops & Staff selected Cherry
Trees as their chosen charity to
support in 2014. Chief Executive
Nicholas Butterworth commented
that ‘With such an enormous amount
of unheralded good work done in
the charitable sector, it is always so
difficult to choose one charity above
another to support but we were
struck by the extraordinary efforts of
everyone at Cherry Trees to create
a wonderful home-from-home for the
children they care for and the immense
benefits respite care provides to the

SCHOOLS & a local
community that care
We receive amazing funding and
support from local schools and also
donations from Harvest Festivals.

charity through sponsored and other events. They also give their Harvest
Festival collections to Cherry Trees every year.
Particular long term supporters of
Cherry Trees are:
•Cranmore
• Ripley Court

Thank you to Shere C of E Infant
School once again for their generous
harvest donations.
The pupils of Ripley Court School
chose the theme “A Walk through
Time” for their annual sponsored
walk to raise money in aid of Cherry
Trees. We are also delighted that they
are providing the choir at the annual
Cherry Trees Christmas Carol Service.
Danes Hill School have been great
supporters of Cherry Trees for many
years and we are grateful to the school
for raising funds for us through their
Christmas Fair and also to Bevendean
Pre Prep who raised funds through
events such as a mufti day.
A big thank you from all at Cherry
Trees to the United Reform Church
in Gomshall who organised a
Harvest Collection for us – We
enjoyed a plethora of gifts and are
very appreciative.
The Ice Bucket Challenge
Thanks to the Davies family who in line
with summer 2014 fund raising trends did
the ice bucket challenge for Cherry Trees!
Thank you so much to Tim, Sharon and
Hayley for their stoical support of Cherry
Trees – we really appreciate your gesture!

this event and are delighted to have
been advised that we will also be a
beneficiary in 2015.

Drift Golf Club Celebrates their
40th Anniversary by supporting Cherry Trees
We are absolutely delighted that the three incoming
Captains of Drift Golf Club, Men’s Captain David Gill,
Ladies Captain Margaret Ivin and Seniors Captain
David Williams have all chosen Cherry Trees as their
Captain’s Charity of the year for 2015.
The Captains were all keen to mark the special 40th
Anniversary for Drift Golf Club by supporting a local
charity and upon visiting Cherry Trees decided that this
was the one!
David Gill said “Cherry Trees is a very special place in
our local community providing wonderful care and support
for children and their families. 2015 is Cherry Trees
35th anniversary and the Drift Golf Club’s 40th so I hope
these anniversary dates will not only help raise
Cherry Trees profile but also help enable us to raise a
significant amount of money that will make a real difference
to such a special cause. And a plea to all golfers reading
this, you can help too by asking your club to support
the Drift’s 40th Anniversary Drive to auction 40 four ball
vouchers for 40 different clubs - with the proceeds going to
support the special children at Cherry Trees, – Thank you.”
If you or someone you know is able to get a voucher
please can you let Tania Cantoni at Cherry Trees have it.
It can be any Golf Club it does not have to be local. Ben
Beagley the General Manager said that “The Drift will
provide a reciprocal four ball voucher to every club who
donates one as a thank you for them to use in their own
fundraising activities.”

HIGHLIGHTS of 2014
Apart from the marvelous day at Chessington World of Adventures courtesy of Merlin’s Magic Wand there
were plenty of other highlights. There is not enough space to put them all but below is a selection –
Crispian Steele-Perkins CherryFest 2014
Concert for Cherry Trees
Over the years Cherryfest, held on the May Bank Holiday
at the Duke of Cambridge pub in Tilford pub has become
a popular fixture as a fun family day out. This year was the
sixth one and was generally pronounced to be the best
ever. Every year this event just gets better and better and
we are really grateful to Red Mist Leisure for their continued
support and to all the volunteers who make this event so
successful including the staff from Home County Carers.
In September guests enjoyed a highly entertaining
Crispian Steele-Perkins Concert in St Thomas of
Canterbury Church in East Clandon. Crispian is a worldrenowned trumpeter who can be heard weekly playing the
signature tune of The Antiques Roadshow on BBC2. He
and his accompanist Leslie Pearson performed to a packed
and very appreciative audience. The concert raised over
£2,000 for Cherry Trees and Katie Knight, a Cherry Trees
“regular” was delighted to meet Crispian Steele-Perkins.
Crispian is a patron of Cherry Trees and we are extremely
grateful for his continued support.
Curry & Comedy Night
This event was held in
March and returned by
popular request in October.
It was a superb evening held
in Clandon Regis Golf Club.
A great night was had by all
and thanks are due to parent
Emily Cross who organised
the evening.

Cherry Trees Charity
Golf Day 2014
Cherry Trees golfers rose to the challenge for the 24th
consecutive year in early November when they competed in
our annual golf day, this time at Worplesdon Golf Club. We
have been so lucky to have the enthusiastic support of local
and not so local golfers over the years, playing at some of
Surrey’s top courses. It’s always a pleasure to welcome back
old faces – with each year a mix of new ones.
Congratulations to Jeremy Lowe and his team this year’s
winners on 91 points.
After a splendid lunch Cherry Trees parent Caroline Black
spoke with passion about the difference Cherry Trees has
made to both Alice and her family.
Many thanks to Worplesdon Golf Club for its superb
hospitality and generous support. Thanks too to our fantastic
band of helpers and in particular Eric and Gai Palmer, Hazel
Corstin and Trudi Harris who organise the day so well - and
last but not least to the players themselves. The day raised
over £10,500 for Cherry Trees which is simply marvellous.
Au Revoir
and a massive thank you to…
Trustees Martin Billett and Bill Prosser and Fundraising
Co-Ordinator Jan Eastaff and Committee Members Mary
Fryer, Beverley Mogridge, Mandy Weight, and Chris
Vinten who have for a variety of reasons had to step
down. They have all served Cherry Trees tirelessly and
we are so very grateful for all their time and expertise.
June Bailey who has been part of Cherry Trees for many
years has decided it is time for her to retire. She leaves us
at Christmas and we would like to put on record here how
much everyone at Cherry Trees has appreciated her time
and commitment over the years.
Welcome
We welcome on board as new Trustees Mark Clement
and Simon Runton who are both local businessmen and
have a wealth of knowledge and enthusiasm to offer to
Cherry Trees. Other new Trustees also include
Rev. Barnaby Perkins, Rector of East and West Clandon
Churches, Emily Cross a parent at Cherry Trees and
Deborah Powlesland from Barlow Robbins who is the new
Company Secretary. Finally, a warm welcome to Helen

INTRODUCING
Tania Cantoni
Fundraising Manager at Cherry Trees
I have only been here since the middle of September and my feet have not touched
the ground but I am loving every minute of it and know that I have made the right
decision to join the “Cherry Trees Family”.
I have met lots of volunteers and supporters of Cherry Trees and spoken to many
of you on the phone or via e mail but look forward to meeting you all in time. You will
always be assured of a warm welcome at the Barn!
As you would expect, I am keen to make a difference to Cherry Trees and to add
to all the excellent work that has been done over the last 35 years.
If you have
any ideas or suggestions at all please do not hesitate to contact me to discuss
them (01483 222507 or e-mail [email protected]). We are planning events
for 2015 and beyond and I would be more than happy to have some suggestions or
thoughts – whether they be enthusiasm for a repeat of a successful event or
suggestions for new events or fundraisers.
With very best wishes

Regular income, no matter what the size, is vital to Cherry Trees. It helps us to plan, secure in the
knowledge that we have the much needed funds to run Cherry Trees. Giving through a regular standing
order from your bank also saves Cherry Trees money as it cuts down on administration costs.
Your gift can be worth 25% more!
In this harsh economic climate, tax efficient giving is more important than
ever allowing us to maximise our income from donations. If you are a UK
tax payer Cherry Trees can reclaim £2.50 for every £10 donated.
Thank you for your support. Your gift will help ensure that children with disabilities and their families
continue to receive respite care.
