Proposed Slingsby fuel buying consortium: I have taken
over from Dave Birkbeck in trying to set up the fuel buying
consortium. I have several names already and would
welcome anyone else who wants to take advantage of
cheaper heating oil. This is a not for profit arrangement
and I would welcome enquiries, by email wherever possible
to keep down any admin costs. I aim to be up and running
for October so please contact me, Chrysa Apps,

Parish Snippets
Our North York’s Councillor Clare Wood attended the first
part of the meeting.
Clare told us that we have six commissioning groups for
healthcare, where as most areas have one. Is this cost
effective?
Road maintenance. The very poor state of Ryedale roads
was much commented on by those present. North
Yorkshire C.C. does employ four full time inspectors and an
Improvements Officer. A member of the public observed
that the roads in Richmondshire and the Dales were of
much higher standard than Ryedale, many of which must
pose a risk to the user. A risk which will increase when the
clocks change and road users are commuting in the dark.
Community Trust Fund.
Fund The PC is to apply for a grant of
£20,000 towards the ongoing street light refurbishment
project.
Snow Clearing. The PC are getting ahead of the game and
trying to put volunteers in place for snow clearing during
the coming winter. Please contact our Parish Clerk, Dinah
Farley, 01653 628858, email: [email protected] to
offer your help.
Your next Parish Council meeting is Monday 12th November

Slingsby. Meeting
held on Tuesday 11th September 2012. 15 members
attended with 10 apologies for absence. The Chairman
opened the meeting and welcomed guest speaker Glenys
Rowe who gave a very enlightening and interesting talk
entitled ‘To Coin a Phrase’, giving an insight into the origins
of every day phrases. Beryl Bramall gave the vote of thanks
and Sue Birkbeck and Shelagh Richards served tea and
coffee. The next meeting will take place on Tuesday, 9th
October 2012. The talk will be ‘A Funny thing happened on
the way to police station’. New members are always
welcome. If interested please contact:
Christine Crouch on 01653 628470.
The Church Tower appeal continues but is now not too far
short of its target. Very many thanks to all those who
supported the stalls at the Car Boot Sale on 9th September
with contributions to the stalls and help and support on the
day. We were exceedingly lucky with the weather; it was
almost too hot for comfort! The event raised a magnificent
£578:90. Particular thanks to Pat Calvert for organising
the tombola and to the Sports Field Committee for their
support once again.

Celebrates the Completion of the Tower Restoration

L to R John Crump, Rt. Revd. Martin Wallace, Revd. Beryl Bowes
A good congregation gathered for a service of Thanksgiving
and Rededication at All Saints’ Church, Slingsby on
Sunday evening 2nd September attended by the Bishop of
Selby, the Rt. Revd. Martin Wallace. He preached and
rededicated the tower and other areas of the building
which are to be developed for wider community use.
A big thank you to all those who turned out on Saturday
25th August, while the rain poured down outside, to help
clean All Saints Church after the building repair work.
Particular thanks to John Apps and David Thornley for
taking on the high up cleaning in areas which have seen no
duster or brush for many years and where the spiders had
run riot.
The church was left sparkling and dust free, with clean
windows and gleaming brass and silver, in time for the
Service of Rededication of the church tower by Bishop
Martin on 2nd September.
Keeping such a large building in good order is a herculean
task. Your help was truly appreciated.

A feature in the service was the symbolic presentation of an
engraved silver trowel used to lay the foundation stone of
the church when it was rebuilt in 1867. Mr. John Crump, of
Matthias Garn, Master Mason and partner representing the
stonemasons, architect and other contractors, handed the
trowel to the Bishop as a token of the skills employed in
the restoration. Also on display was a Bible given to the
church by its 19th century benefactor Admiral Edward
Howard, containing a list of parishioners who contributed
financially towards the £5,000 total for the rebuilding.
The cost of the recent work was £100,000, and it is an
amazing achievement that the church and village
community have raised almost the entire amount in a
relatively short time through grants, fund-raising events
and generous giving. Fund-raising continues, and final
donations are welcome, to cover extra costs incurred and
provide for further improvements in the future. The
Parochial Church Council would like to express their
appreciation to all who have contributed in any way to the
project, which was carried out to a very high standard and
has resulted in the building being made safe and sound for
future generations.

toddlers has already started. It meets in the Methodist
Schoolroom on Thursdays during term time from 1:30pm to
3pm. Contact Liz Wilson for details. Tel 628047
Adventure Club for children aged 4 – 11 will begin on
Thursday 4th October in the Methodist Schoolroom from 6–
7pm. Contacts are Louise Hayes tel 01653-628064 and
Becky Ward 0793 335 0189.
Mike Smith
Can I introduce myself as the new Methodist Minister in
Slingsby, following in the footsteps of the much loved
Graham Sellers, who tragically died earlier this year? If you
think my name is familiar that is because I was minister
here for nine years from 1994 until 2003 when we moved
to Fleetwood. I returned to live in Malton upon my
retirement in 2009 and now, much to my surprise, find
myself working again on a part time basis looking after not
only the chapel here in Slingsby but the one at Hovingham
as well! I greatly enjoyed the years I was minister here
before and am looking forward to this ‘encore’ which I hope
will be equally enjoyable, on both sides. Whilst most of my
time will be spent on the life of the chapel I also hope to be
able to involve myself in some other activities within the
village. If anyone wants to contact me, about any matter,
my details are below.

The Women’s Fellowship meets on alternate Tuesday
afternoons at the homes of Mrs Freda Ware and Mrs Esther
Dennis.
The Slingsby Fellowship Group meets on alternate
Wednesday evenings at the home of Mrs Dennis,
Castlegarth, High Street from 7:30pm to 9pm.
We are soon to begin a special course which is called
‘COME AS YOU ARE’ and will be led by Rev Mike Smith.
It is a ten-session course exploring Christian Discipleship.
The introduction says the course sets out to get people
thinking about their faith and what it means in their day to
day life to be a follower of Christ. It appears to be a very
interesting and thought provoking course, do come and
give it a try.
Contact Stephen Prest for further details. Tel 628277.
The SHOEBOX service is on Sunday 11th November at
10:30am and will be led by Mrs Helen Leng from Pickering.
Leaflets about the shoeboxes will be available shortly. The
shoeboxes, full of gifts and presents, are sent at Christmas
time to children in Eastern Europe and beyond who
otherwise would not receive any presents at all. It has
grown to be a hugely successful initiative.

Meetings resumed in September after the summer break
with a useful and interesting study evening looking at old
deeds or indentures of properties in the village and
learning how to read them.
We hope to intersperse talks throughout the coming year
with working sessions covering groups of buildings in the
village and recording what we find. The next meeting will
be on Tuesday 16th October at 7:

We hope to have another local history day next March.
Over the year aim to try and cover the history of different
areas of the village and key buildings and also do some
physical survey work. To this end, the November meeting
will concentrate on the south west corner of the village
when Chris Churches and Martin Holt will present what they
know about their property. We also hope to take in others
in the area of the Malton/Helmsley Road, such as Slingsby
Heights and Croft House. If you have any photographs or
information about this area including the top of High Street
please bring it to that meeting at 7:30pm in the Village Hall

Castle Howard in this Prize Quiz!
We are naturally delighted by the many favourable comments
we receive about THE TRI∆NGLE newsletter. Comments about
the website, in contrast, are fewer and less positive. It’s not
that people don’t like it – they just don’t see the point of it. We
are hoping with this quiz to show you that there is more to the
website than at first meets your eye, and that you could be
missing out by not making fuller use of it.
Of course we do understand that there may be one major
reason why you aren’t using the website: you don’t have a
computer! And to complete this quiz you will need a
computer (that means a PC, laptop, tablet, or even one of
those smartphones), or access to one. If there isn’t a
computer in your family, you could try using one at your
local library or an internet café. And if you’re put off by the
fact that you are perhaps a little past your prime and
couldn’t possibly cope with learning to use something as
scary as a computer, maybe you should read the short
article by Shelagh Richards – a self-confessed ‘Silver Surfer’
– in the June/July 2012 edition of THE TRI∆NGLE. She
grasped the nettle, bit the bullet, took the bull by the horns
and hasn’t looked back. Honestly, it’s never too late! And if
you think cost may be an issue, it’s not as expensive as you
may think.
Another possible reason for being dismissive about the
website is that you have never looked beyond the Home
Page (what you see when you first open the website) and
don’t realize just how rich and varied is the information that
lies behind the tabs at the top of the screen.
The answers to all the quiz questions can be found on the
website (to remind you it’s at www.slingsbyvillage.co.uk).
With many of them (but not all), you can use the Search
function on the right-hand side of every page, just below
LATEST NEWS AND EVENTS.
When you’re ready, type your answers, in order, in an e-mail
and send it to [email protected].
[email protected]. The
competition winner will be drawn from among all the
correct entries received by Friday 16th November 2012. The
answers will be given and the winner announced in the
December/January issue of THE TRI∆NGLE.
Members of the Slingsby Website and Newsletter Group and
their families are excluded from entry in the competition,
and the judges’ decision is final.
