On December 19, 2015, we lost a beloved man of great vision, Father Richard Curry, S.J. In partnership with Connie Milstein, Father Curry co-founded Dog Tag, Inc., a charitable organization dedicated to the empowerment of our Veterans with service-connected disabilities, spouses, and caregivers. In remembrance of his 73rd birthday on March 18th, 2016, we are establishing a memorial fund in his name to help support and continue the mission he and Connie Milstein started over four years ago. Our goal is to raise $500k through the Father Richard Curry, S.J. Memorial Fund in 2016. Please consider giving to this fund and help us carry on his work to better the lives of Veterans with service connected disabilities, spouses, and caregivers. Please read on to learn more about Father Curry, Dog Tag, Inc. and the levels of giving that will go toward his Memorial Fund. Who We Are Dog Tag, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) dedicated to providing Veterans with service-connected disabilities, spouses and caregivers with education and employment opportunities. The ultimate goal of our organization is the empowerment of our servicemen and women as they make the transition back to civilian life. The Need As the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan wind down, hundreds of thousands of military personnel are returning to the United States with a look toward transition to civilian life. With the rising prevalence of PTS, coupled with the challenge of juggling a family and a career, too often our military heroes face this difficult transition alone. The difficulty facing our communities, particularly in the District of Columbia, home to more than 5000 veterans with disabilities, is providing these brave men and women with the resources to successfully take that next step in their lives. Our Work To meet this challenge, Dog Tag, Inc. has created a holistic education and employment program designed to empower veterans with disabilities and/or their spouses in their personal and professional lives. Our organization supports individuals as they operate a bakery located on Grace Street in the Georgetown neighborhood of Washington, D.C. In the program they gain real world experience while simultaneously pursuing a tailor-made curriculum covering small business management, entrepreneurship, and personal development. Classroom time will be complemented by personal counseling, career planning, and leadership coaching to help assimilation into civilian life. In short, this program will provide our students with the training and experience needed to apply to, interview for, and secure a paid position in a professional setting. To date, we have graduated two classes and are currently conducting one of two back to back classes in 2016. About Our Co-Founders Dog Tag, Inc. was co-founded by Father Richard Curry, S.J. and Connie Milstein. Father Curry dedicated his life to assisting people with disabilities as he was born missing his right forearm. In 1977, he founded the National Theatre Workshop of the Handicapped (NTWH), a non-profit organization that focused on training persons with disabilities in professional theatre and in the business of baking. Following the attacks on September 11, 2001, Father Curry helped design the Wounded Warriors Writers Program to address the new life and needs of military members returning with service-connected disabilities. Beginning in 2009, he relocated to Washington, D.C., where he became an adjunct professor at Georgetown University and began the vision for Dog Tag, Inc. and Dog Tag Bakery. He helped start the Student Veterans of American for Georgetown University as their chaplain and continued to counsel and serve veterans in need. Connie Milstein previously ran a bakery, Connie’s Bakery & General Store, located in Mt. Kisco, New York. Connie’s Bakery was known for the employment for women in disadvantage situations and donating 100% of its net profits to charity. Dog Tag, Inc. is proud to have Connie’s line of delicious baked goods on our shelves and is grateful to have a partner in developing a replicate model for veteran empowerment. Connie moved to Washington, D.C., where she helped start Blue Star Families, a nonprofit focused on the support of military families. Father Curry joined forces with co-founder Connie Milstein to launch its program in the spring of 2014, to combat the challenges of veteran transition into the civilian workplace. 2 Giving Opportunities For Dog Tag, Inc. through the Father Richard Curry, S.J. Memorial Fund Investing in Our Program We invite you to invest in our program. Our two primary objectives are (1) ensuring that Fellows can participate in the program without jeopardizing their financial stability; and (2) creating a curriculum through Georgetown University’s School of Continuing Studies that will adequately prepare them for future success. Supporting a Curriculum that Prepares for Future Success One of the signature aspects of our program, the curriculum, provides entrepreneurial and communications training, personal development, and mentorship opportunities. We offer it in conjunction with Georgetown University’s School of Continuing Studies. Dog Tag, Inc. is seeking investments in this area to ensure that the resources associated with the curriculum (teachers, computers, guest speakers, etc.) are not only top-notch, but also available to all future enrolled students. Ensuring the Financial Stability of our Students Many Fellows enter our program juggling the demands of both a family and a disability. While Dog Tag, Inc. cannot shoulder their full financial responsibility, we wish to contribute in a substantive way. For this reason, our organization is committed to providing our students with scholarship packages. Investment Options in Honor of Father Curry in Support of Dog Tag, Inc.: A $1,000 investment will provide one Fellow with books for one five month class period. A $2,000 investment will provide one Fellow with books for two five month class periods.
