Balance
• Balance is important in all parts of life. All
work and no play makes you crazy.
• It is also important is landscape design.
• Humans feel better in landscapes that have a
sense of balance.
• Two types of balance: symmetrical &
asymmetrical.
Symmetrical Balance (Formal Balance).
•
•
•
•
Used in formal landscape designs.
Right-side is the same as the left-side.
Reflected along a center axis.
Use geometric patterns in the walkway,
planting beds, and the way the plants are
pruned.
• Highly maintained.
Asymmetrical Balance
• Informal balance. Requires the viewer to
understand that there is balance.
• Differs from one side to the other and creates
a more relaxed and less ridged feel to the
design.
• Used when the terrain does not allow for
symmetrical balance.
• Hard to understand.
In Conclusion
• Principals such as balance create landscapes
that are visually pleasing.
• They have not been created, rather they are
innate qualities that people posses.
• Use these rules to create designs that make
sense to look at.
