2 Hazards identification
Extremely flammable
Extremely flammable. Spilled liquid has a very low temperature; risk of frostbite upon rapidly
leaking liquid propane. Condensed gas, which is heavier than air and may spread across the
ground. Leaking propane creates severe risk of fire. Propane is odorless, but may become foggy
on contact with humid air.

4 First aid measures
Inhalation
Skin contact
Eye contact
Ingestion
Inhalation of propane in small amounts causes dizziness, headaches, nausea, apathy. Inhalation of propane in large amounts causes risk of respiratory difficulty, unconsciousness,
paralysis, suffocation without warning. Ensure inhalation of fresh air. Keep the injured party
warm and immobile. If respiratory or/and cardiac arrest occurs, give first aid. Call a physician.
Skin contact may cause frostbite. Remove contaminated clothing and visit physician in case
of frostbite. In case of spill, wash with lukewarm water (20-30 °C) for not less than 15 minutes.
Eye contact may cause frostbite. Visit a physician. In case of liquid spill, wash with water for
not less than 15 minutes. In case of burn, wash with large quantities of water for not less
than 15 minutes.
Unlikely.
5 Fire-fighting measures
Method
Extinguishing media
Alert fire department. Stop gas flow if possible. Evacuate risk area. Keep tank cool with a broad water spray from a
protected area. Do not extinguish leaking gas that is on fire unless necessary, meaning unless
there is a risk of the fire spreading. After extinguishing, the propane must be aired out.
Water mist, powder, foam or carbon dioxide (CO2). Consult experts. Use fire suit, protective
gloves and protective glasses. In enclosed areas, use respiratory apparatus with independent
tank.
6 Accidental release measures
Stop leaks if it is possible to do so without risk.
Remove incendiary sources. Drainage holes must be covered, and basement levels and work
pits evacuated.
Post warning signs and alert people in the vicinity of the fire hazard, evacuate in case of large
spills. (Refer to point 3.)
Contact (alert) fire department.
Ensure sufficient air circulation. Use respiratory apparatus with independent tank.
Never enter gas cloud.
7 Handling and storage
Special characteristics
and risks Handling
Storage
Extremely flammable liquid gas. Vapors may gather on the ground and in low-lying areas. Use
explosion-protected electrical equipment. Ensure proper ventilation.
Under pressure in enclosed system.
Use only approved equipment and material. Store liquid gas in pressure tanks outside or
in well-ventilated areas. Use bonded equipment. Well separated from incendiary sources,
oxidizing gases and elements. Store at temperatures below 50°C.
8 Exposure controls/personal protection
Exposure controls
Tightly fitting protective goggles. Gloves made from leather or heavy-duty textile material. Jumpsuit clothing. Sufficient ventilation.

10 Stability and reactivity
Stable at normal temperatures. May form combustible combinations with air. Polymers
should be avoided in contact with the liquid.
11 Toxilogical information
Propane is poison free, although inhalation of concentrated propane gas may cause some
narcotic effect, respiratory difficulties and suffocation symptoms when the oxygen level in
the breathing air becomes too low.
12 Ecological information
The compound’s high volatility causes minor immediate environmental effect. In the
atmosphere, propane is estimated to decay at a half life of one to two weeks.
13 Disposal considerations
Any remaining gas in the tank or pipes is disposed of by flaring.
