TheEuropeanConsortiumforOceanResearchDrilling(ECORD)offersyoutheuniqueopportunitytosailon
Expeditions 367 and 368 onboard the JOIDES Resolution in the framework of the International Ocean
DiscoveryProgram(IODP),aninternationalresearchprogramfordrillingatsea.
Goals:ThetwoSouthChinaSea(SCS)RiftedMarginExpeditions(basedonIODPProposals878-CPPand
878-Add)aimtounderstandthemechanismsoflithosphereextensionduringcontinentalbreakupatanonvolcanicriftedmargin.
TheSCSmarginshowssimilaritiestothehyper-extendedIberia-Newfoundlandmargins,possiblyincluding
exhumedandserpentinizedmantlewithintheContinent-Ocean-Transition(COT).However,modeling
studiessuggestthattherecanbemechanismsofplateweakeningotherthanserpentinizationofsubcontinentallithosphericmantle.Twocompetingmodelsforplaterupture(intheabsenceofexcessivelyhot
asthenosphericmantle)havewidelydifferentpredictionsfordevelopmentoftheSCSmargin.
Todiscriminatebetweenthesemodels,aseriesofdeep-penetrationsiteswillbedrilledacrossa150–200
kmwidezoneofhighlyextendedseaward-thinningcrustwithawell-imagedCOTzone.Coringandlogging
deep/basalsedimentsandtheunderlyingbasementistheprimaryobjective.
TheproposeddrillsitesdeterminethenatureofcrustwithintheCOTandconstrain(a)post-breakupcrustal
subsidence,(b)howsoonafterbreakupigneouscruststartedtoform,(c)timingofrifting,and(d)rateof
extension.Thescienceobjectivescanbeeffectivelyaddressedatthesedrillsitesbecauseoftheexisting
constraintsonSCSformationandstratigraphythatincludeindustrydrilling,ODPLeg184andIODP
Expedition349drilling,aswellasduetotheyoung(Paleogene)riftingofthemarginandabsenceof
excessivelythickpost-riftsediments.
