2002 ANNUAL DINNER
October 11 • New York, NY
Over 400 guests attended the 2002 Annual Dinner of The Korea Society,
which was held in the Grand Ballroom of The Waldorf-Astoria.
The guest of honor for the event, Senator Jon S. Corzine (D-NJ), delivered
a major address highlighting the recovery of the Republic of Korea from
the 1997 financial crisis. He also lauded the progress made in recent years
in overcoming the remaining strictures of the Cold War on the Korean
peninsula.
The 2002 Van Fleet Award was bestowed on Dr. Horace G. Underwood,
the grandson of the founder of Yonsei University, who was recognized for his
unique contributions to Korea and to U.S.-Korea relations. Among the many
accomplishments noted in the citation were his service during the Korean
War as senior interpreter for the armistice negotiations at P'anmunjom
from July 1951 to 1953 and his lifelong contributions to Yonsei University. In
presenting the award to Dr. Underwood, Amb. Gregg noted: "I am struck by
the fact that he is the only recipient who has had direct contact with
General James A.Van Fleet. That makes the presentation of this award to Dr.
Underwood all the more appropriate and special, as does the fact that today
happens to be Dr. Underwood's 85th birthday!"
The evening's program also included an address by Mr. Myung-Kwan Hyun,
the chairman of Samsung Corporation, on the economic reforms implemented in the Republic of Korea in recent years.
