April
Szerző: Howard Phillips Lovecraft • Év: 1917
Hertha, awake! discard thy snowy sheen,
And greet the dews that drape the sprouting green;
Let sun and show’r revive the sleeping plain,
Whilst April leaflets deck the grove again.
Feel the soft zephyr, that at glow of dawn
Plays in delight o’er crocus-spangled lawn;
Behold the blossoms that adorn each bow’r,
And breathe the perfume of the op’ning flow’r;
Imbibe the rapture, and with joy attend
The feather’d choir whose notes harmonic blend.
Rejoice, ye Fauns that roam the shaded hill!
Rejoice, ye Nymphs that haunt the sylvan rill!
Eternal Pan a rustic garland weaves,
And leaps, goat-footed, ‘neath the tender leaves.
Deep in the hollow, where the willow springs,
The crystal Arethusa softly sings;
Around her banks in modest grace are set
The purple petals of the violet:
‘Tis here the gentle Dryads pause to drink,
And pluck their chaplets by the flow’r-fring’d brink;
‘TN here the swain, stretch’d on the bord’ring sod,
Learns to love Nature, and love Nature’s God!
Upon the slope that fronts the noontide sun
The sportive flocks and supple eanlings run;
With lissome gambols please the shepherd’s eye,
And feel the ardour of the smiling sky:
In golden wealth beneath their prancing feet
Lie the fair forms of daffodillies sweet;
Whose rising fragrance, delicate and rare,
Gives potent magic to the vernal air.
See the trim orchard, whose all-cov’ring green
is fleck’d with white, as blossoms burst between;
Before our gaze upon the branches grow
Ethereal drifts of aromatic snow!
as the warm sap the grateful tree ascends,
So to mankind new life its vigour lends:
Our weary race their winter burdens shed,
And young once more, look blithesomely ahead!
ehold the blue, where Sol’s Hesperian rays
Dispute the azure with a redd’ning blaze;
Where golden Venus, bright Olympian spark,
Relieves the shadows of the creeping dark.
O’er western slopes with feeble beams expire
The fading embers of Brumalian fire,
Whilst far aloft, in gem-bespangled space,
Majestic Leo glows with warmer grace.
Young, like the year, Diana’s silver car
Hangs crescent in pellucid deep afar;
And hills and woods, responsive to the sight,
Gleam fairy-like in tender, timid light.

Eternal Nature! whose undying pow’r
Wakes to new beauty in the springtime hour;
Whose April skies, enjoin’d by changeless truth,
Arouse the meadows to resurgent youth;
Thro’ frost-curs’d vortices of Scythian strife
Thou bring’st the blessed vernal boon of Life!
