EC1 has a growing reputation for some of the best
nightspots in town. Forget the frippery of the West End.
North and east of the City is where you will find young,
creative mixologists with a penchant for the piquant.
Cocktails are not just a side project for the people
behind The Jones Family Project. They are an integral
part of the experience.
It’s the same elsewhere. Cocktails are categorised by
pre- or post-Prohibition era ingredients at Nightjar the entrance to which is an unmarked door off
Old Street Roundabout. Through the Victorian-esque
rabbit hole of Callooh Callay is where, on their nights
off, the best cocktail mixers go to drink. Whether here
or at McQueen, the Medcalf or Neo Barbican, the
cocktail is king in EC1.

Makers Café is just one example of the worlds that
often collide in EC1. Baristas, technologists and
designer makers are the local heroes and they
come together in perfect harmony at Shoreditch’s
self-declared “half maker-space, half café”. Specialising
in new manufacturing techniques, Makers Café
suggests you grab a coffee from local stalwart
La Marzocco and try your hand at producing your
own 3D printed coffee cup or laser-cut coaster.
If you prefer to enjoy your hot drink at a cooler
pace, then head to Ozone Coffee Roasters for a truly
artisanal experience (they have their own roastery
on-site). For a seat with a view, try Shoreditch Grind
– a circular coffee shop and bakery in 1950s American
style interior. And all of this without even venturing
north towards Clerkenwell or Angel.

The streets surrounding City Road are dotted with galleries that reflect the
idiosyncrasies of their neighbourhoods – from the surprises of Shoreditch
to distinguished Clerkenwell and the more established Angel.
These gallery spaces are marked by unassuming doorways
and discreet signs: Ancient and Modern, Arcade, Stuart
Shave Modern Art. The latter, a deceptively large space
next to St Luke’s on Helmet Row, moved into EC1 recently
from Fitzrovia and is always worth a visit.
It follows in distinguished footsteps. Victoria Miro Gallery, on
Wharf Road between the City Road Basin and Wenlock Basin
and one of the best galleries in London, made the move from
Cork Street in Mayfair in 2000, citing the area’s “buzz”. Art is
made here too and the area hosts a wealth of studios and
creative workspaces, such as Cubitt Gallery, as well as by
appointment-only gems like What Are You Looking At?
