When a Girl Scout sells you a package of cookies, she’s doing much more. She’s creating a plan, interacting with customers and working as part of a team. And, she’s also building a lifetime of skills and confidence linked to leadership and financial literacy. Ways Your Troop Can Participate in the Girl Scout Cookie Program 1. Traditional Order Taking: Girls take the order card door to door and contact friends and family asking them to support their Girl Scout troop by buying Girl Scout Cookies. 2. Digital Cookie (also referred to as DOC): Digital Cookie is an online business tool girls can use to reach new customers and higher cookie sales by sending e-mails through a secure site. 3. Goal Getter Order Cards: Girls use this special order card to keep taking orders as customers keep calling. Every girl in each Service Unit that sells 25 boxes during this time will be entered into a drawing to win a Girl Scout Cookie Cart. 4. Gift of Caring Program - Operation Sweet Treats: Girl Scouts can take orders to donate to U.S. military members through every part of the cookie program. 5. Cookie Booths: Troops can pick up booth cookies at a local cupboard and sell as a team in front of local establishments. This is a great way for troops to earn additional proceeds and work towards achieving Troop per-girl-average rewards - not to mention have fun working together! You can even host a “No Cookie Cookie Booth” during National Girl Scout Cookie Booth Weekend (Feb. 24-26) to collect donations for Operation Sweet Treats without having to manage inventory! I assure you that it does! As 2016 comes to a close I would like to share with you the many accomplishments that you have helped make possible, especially the Girl Scout Gold Award, which turned 100 this past year. The Girl Scout Gold Award, the highest award in Girl Scouting, recognizes the leadership, effort, and impact girls in grades 9-12 have had on their communities. Only about five percent of eligible girls earn this prestigious award, but those who complete the journey change the lives of others and their own in amazing and significant ways. Your donation enables more girls to participate in the Girl Scout Leadership Experience, unleash their full potential, build their future, and transform their world. Your gift directly impacts the lives of girls in your community like Danielle and Nicolle, two sisters from Mt.Vernon, IL who have both earned this prestigious award. “Girl Scouts has impacted my life so much over the years,” Nicolle said. “Not only has it helped me come out of my shell, it also taught me some important life lessons along the way. It taught me that I could be a leader — that I had the drive and the skills all along. To this day, I use these same skills in my work and my schooling.” “Earning my Gold Award taught me skills that I’ll use in the future; it made me more responsible,” Danielle said. She encourages other girls to strive for this top award. “Do it,” she said. “Believe in yourself and push yourself to do better each day.” Your continuous support helped girls buy their first Daisy vest, go on educational fieldtrips, learn about science and technology, and funded their community service projects. You also helped 2,600 girls participate in a great outdoor experience, purchase program equipment and provided nearly $100,000 in financial assistance to girls in need. Thank you again for your continued support of Girl Scouts of Southern Illinois and our 12,500 girls and 4,800 adult volunteers. You are truly making a difference! Your gift will help us to continue to build girls of courage, confidence and character who make the world a better place. When girls like Danielle and Nicolle succeed, so does the world. Have a wonderful and safe holiday season! Sincerely, Villie M. Appoo Chief Executive Officer Take the Lead Like a Girl Scout While some people still think of us as just cookies, badges, campfires, and friendship bracelets, Girl Scouts are so much more. Girl Scouts are groundbreakers, big thinkers, and role models. Girl Scouts design robots, start garage bands, and improve their communities—and yes, they sell the best cookies on the planet. When she’s a Girl Scout, she’s also a G.I.R.L. (Go-getter, Innovator, Risk-taker, Leader)™. Go-getter: She’s bold, honest, and determined to succeed. Goal oriented and ambitious, she’s also a life-long learner who believes no challenge is too difficult. Innovator: Thinking outside the box is her speciality, so she’s always looking for a creative way to take action. She definitely knows how to get things done. Risk-taker: Courageous and strong, she’s keen to try new things and to embrace the unfamiliar. She’s ready to step up and break the mold if that’s what it takes. Leader: She’s confident, responsible, and committed to changing the world for the better—and she’s happiest when others join her in taking the lead! These are the traits that define girls of courage, confidence, and character, who make the world a better place. This is the Girl Scout DNA! Watch the new G.I.R.L. Girl Scout Bronze Award Recipients The Girl Scout Bronze Award, the highest honor a Girl Scout in grades 4-5 can earn, was created by a troop of Girl Scout Juniors from an individual council and introduced in 2001. It requires a Girl Scout Junior to learn the leadership and planning skills necessary to follow through on a project that makes a positive impact on her community. Working towards this award demonstrates her commitment to helping others, improving her community and the world, and becoming the best she can be. Girls typically spend a minimum of 20 hours working on their projects, after the completion of a Girl Scout Journey and project approval.
