Letter to Organizations/Groups
Dear Organizations/Groups,
We are excited to begin this year’s Homecoming and hope you are motivated to
compete in one of the biggest celebrations at Missouri Western. Homecoming will be
hosted the week of October 9th-15th, 2016. We are proud to announce that this year's
theme is "Griffons Bring Home the Gold" and is focused on paying tribute to the
Olympics.
This packet contains the information for all events, guidelines, and applications
needed to participate. You can also find the competition and point layout as well. If
additional copies are needed a digital copy of this packet can be found online
at missouriwestern.edu/homecoming.
The committee has planned and organized many events for you to compete in
and enjoy. We encourage all organizations or students can create a group of five (5) or
more students to participate, whether for points or for fun. Our goal is to enjoy, and
make this Homecoming at Missouri Western one to remember.

General Homecoming Guidelines
(revised 9/20/2016)
•
The Homecoming Steering Committee and its advisors reserve the right to make
the final decision in matters pertaining to points, disqualifications, and
interpretations of Homecoming guidelines.
•
Participants of Homecoming events must follow all guidelines set forth in this
packet and any verbal guidelines given at events.
•
Infractions pertaining to disregard of guidelines may result in disqualification from
events or Homecoming altogether.
•
Any sort of substance abuse taking place during Homecoming events will result
in disqualification from Homecoming altogether.
•
Participants in Homecoming events should be respectful of all other participants,
judges, and the Homecoming Steering Committee.
•
All judges for competitions (except Griffon Olympian) will be selected by the
Chair of Awards and Judges. Chair of Royalty will select the judges for Griffon
Olympian. All judges have final say in the winners of each competition. All judges
selected will be approved by the Assistant Directors of Homecoming.
•
Cheating is prohibited in all Homecoming competitions. If a group/organization is
found cheating at an event, it may result in loss of points and/or disqualification.
•
All Organizations/Groups must adhere to Student Code of Conduct and the
Official RSO Handbook guidelines.
•
No Organization/Group is permitted to produce and sell shirts that are
Homecoming related prior to or during Homecoming Week.
•
Please review event pages for specific rules.

Create the Board: Campus Decorating
Looney Multi-Purpose Room
Deadline: Tuesday, October 4th, 2016 no later than 3:00pm
• Objective:
o Promote school spirit and the Homecoming theme around campus by
designing signs to be placed around Downs Drive during Homecoming
Week.
• Rules/Info:
o Boards must incorporate and relate to your organizations/groups designated
Homecoming theme.
o Include: Organization/Group name, theme, and year (EMPHASIZE THE
YEAR) in the design.
o Signs must be no larger than 4'x8' in size.
o Organizations/groups may request a board to be provided by the
Homecoming Committee on their entry form. Provided boards have been
used prior years and a cover up paint coat may be needed.
o Signs may be picked up in the Commons Wednesday September 21st, from
9:00 AM – 8:00 PM by organizations/groups who indicated they needed one.
o Signs must be dropped off in Looney Multi-Purpose Room (room with large
garage door) on October 4th by 3:00 PM.
o Signs MUST be dry when dropped off.
o Organizations/Groups will lose points if late, still wet, or do not meet the
above requirements. I.E. size, year, theme, group/organization name,
and slogan.

Light the Torch (Optional)
• Objective:
o To create a fun atmosphere and give organizations/groups a way to
identify themselves and their chosen theme at each event.
• Rules/Info:
o Each organization/group has the option to create a “torch” to symbolize
their Homecoming theme as well as organization/group name.
o Torch needs to include organizations/groups name.
o Torch needs to be no larger than 2-2 ½ feet.
o Torches will be presented at the Opening Ceremony/Pre-Party on
October 9th to receive 5 participation points
o Organizations/Groups are encouraged to bring and show off your torch at
each event.
•
IMPORTANT: This is encouraged, but totally optional. 5 participation points
will be awarded to organizations/groups who create a torch; no points will
be deducted if you do not participate.

5K Griffon Gold Rush Walk/Run

Sunday October 9th, 2016 2:00 PM – 4:00 PM
Hosted by SFC Bobby Smith and the Army National Guard

T-shirt giveaway to the first 175 students (available for ALL students) to sign up
and show ID.
DJ Dance Party
Objectives:

Be the first organization/group to have their 3 designated members cross the
finish line.
Rules/Info:

Each participating Organization/Group must designate three (3) runners/walkers
to represent their team to the Homecoming Committee Representative. The
designated can NOT be changed after they have been registered.
Only one (1) group of three (3) designated runners/walkers per
organization/group can participate for points.
Points will be awarded to the first three (3) organization/group whose three (3)
designated members cross the finish line to determine Gold, Silver & Bronze.
ALL members of each organization/group and ALL students are encouraged to
participate (no points).

o To win, a team must finish the obstacle course in the quickest time.
•
Rules/Info:
o Each team MUST consist of 5 active members of your organization/group.
o All participating members in this event need to arrive at 6:15 PM to hear
the specific rules of the competition.
*Contestants must wear clothes they do not mind getting dirty.*
A bracket will be made in order to determine the Gold (1st), Silver (2nd), and Bronze (3rd)

Objective:
o Organizations/Groups will compete in Family Feud style competition.
•
Rules/Info:
o Family Feud rules will be followed during this event in order to complete the
game.
o Organizations/Groups may have a “family” of 5 members to participate in the
game.
o All “families” that are competing must arrive at the Spratt 101 at 6:15 PM to
hear the rules of the game.
A bracket will be made in order to determine the Gold (1st), Silver (2nd), and Bronze (3rd)

Blood Drive
Blum 218-219
Tuesday-Thursday, October 11th-13th, 2016 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM
Purpose:
To assist the Community Blood Center (CBC) in collecting blood to be used to save lives
in our community. The blood collected is very important and will save countless lives. The
goal of this event is to collect as many pints of blood as possible. The Homecoming
Committee request all participates in the event come with the expectation to give blood if
they are eligible. While it’s an incentive to earn points for your organization, please do not
forget the intent of why the Community Blood Center is here. Providing correct information
is extremely important and it’s necessary you provide any and all correct information
requested by the CBC during the process.
Blood Drive Points
If you have any questions regarding your eligibility to donate, you can call the Donor
Eligibility Question line at #1-800- 688-0900.
To receive a point: Participate in the Blood Drive and come to the refreshment table to
get a red ticket. Write the name of the group/organization of your choice on the ticket and
place in the box. Tickets will be counted by the Homecoming Committee & the Advisor to
determine the winner.
Scared of needles?? You can still get your point if you want to volunteer instead of
donating. You should contact the Homecoming Committee to make arrangements to
volunteer your time in the amount 15 minutes for your point. You can volunteer doing one
of the following:
•
Volunteering at the refreshments table by handing out beverages or snacks.
•
Creating posters or materials to advertise for the blood drive around campus.
•
Wearing the blood drop suits to help spread awareness of the need for blood
donations on the day of the drive.
•
Hosting a Lunch-time signup table to help get students appointments to donate.

Objective
o Bongo Ball: To win, a team must score more points than the opposing
team.
o Battle Ball: To win, a team must be the last team to get eliminated
•
Rules/Info:
o Each team MUST consist of 5 players.
o All participating members must arrive at 6:45 PM to hear the rules and
regulations.
A bracket will be made in order to determine the Gold (1st), Silver (2nd), and Bronze (3rd)

Friday, October 14th, 2016 Approx. 9:00 PM
(Following the MWSU Volleyball match)
•
Objective:
o To create a fun-filled atmosphere to prepare students, faculty, staff,
alumni, and community members for the Homecoming Game on Saturday
•
Agenda:
o Cheerleaders will open with a performance directly after the volleyball
match
o Dance competition between participating teams
o Crowning of Griffon Olympians
•
Rules and Regulations for Dance Competition:
o Each organization/group participating in Homecoming may perform a
dance/routine for competition
o No fewer than 5 members and no more than12 members can participate

5 points will be deducted for not following the member participation
requirements
o Each performance MUST be between two and three minutes long
(ABSOLUTELY NO LONGER THAN THREE MINUTES)

5 points will be deducted for every 30 seconds over the 3 minute
limit
o The music, costuming, and overall performance must represent the
organizations/groups theme
o Music used must be turned into Blum 217 by Tuesday, October 4th, 2016
by 4:00 PM on a CD/Flash Drive with instructions including track number,
start time, entrance/exit, etc.

The Homecoming Steering Committee will give approval/nonapproval no later than Thursday, October 6th, 2016
IMPORTANT: The Arena floor is new so extra care and precautions are needed to
prevent any damage to the floor. NO street shoes, heels or shoes that will leave
marks will be allowed on the Arena floor. ALL props will need to be approved
through Jessica Frogge ([email protected]) prior to the event. The
only footwear that will be allowed on the arena floor will be clean rubber sole
shoes or socks. If you are unsure ask!!!!!

Parade
Downtown St. Joseph, Frederick Avenue
Saturday, October 15th, 2016 at 7:30 AM
•
Objective:
o Create an event for the Missouri Western and St. Joseph community to
enjoy the pride of Missouri Western State University
•
Where: * This route is tentative*
o Downtown St. Joseph
o Line up between 22 and Frederick on Union Street
o Starting at the merge of Frederick and Faraon
o Left onto 9th Street
o Right onto Felix Street
o Right onto 5th Street
o Right onto Jules Street
o Ending back at the merge of Frederick and Faraon or City Hall
•
Rules:
o All entries must be capable of being transported to the parade line up
site and remain mobile through the duration of the parade.
o All float entries must follow city ordinances in regard to the size
regulation; float units (truck and trailer) must not exceed 80 feet in length
or 12 feet in height from the ground up.
o Group/organization floats must emphasize the name of the
group/organization, and the organizations/groups chosen theme along
with the year.
o All entries may begin to arrive for line up starting at 7:30 AM on Union
Street and all entries must be present at line up by 8:00 AM for check in.
•
Tips:
o Be prepared to stop and start to add bands.
o Be prepared for sharp turns and hills.
o You will be given an entry number. That will be the order you line up in
for parade.
o Judging will be at the lineup of the parade at 8:30 AM on Union Street.
o Points will be awarded to the float with the best design and most
enthusiasm.
o Do not tear down floats after parade. The winning float will be displayed
near Baker Fitness Center & Spratt Stadium.

Students who form a group of five (5) or more OR new organizations (without a member on the
committee) who were approved by SGA as an RSO after Homecoming Committee was selected
have the opportunity to earn up to 75 points by assisting the Committee in varies ways (ie. T-shirt
sales, voting polls, event set up/tear down). Points will be calculated as follows: 3 hours = 25 points
6 hours = 50 points 9 hours = 75 points. Please contact the Homecoming Committee if you are
interested in earning these points.
