Lyn pre-reviewed and asked Celine the following: For Anthro and for Public Health, they are both indicating HiMs could take 500 level courses. Have both of these units cleaned up their 500 level courses and 400/600 offerings? I don't want the HiMs to be caught short handed if those units still have grad course work to clean up. Public Health is aiming to admit 20 students per year? That will be 40 in the program all at once. Isn't this large? Particularly in light of faculty resources. Anthropology says 10% per year. I'm not sure what the number of majors is for Anthro, but the faculty have complained about being over burdened. Celine responded: Anthro has made the shift to 400/600 courses. They continue with about 10 electives at the 500 level to serve their MA and PhD programs. Given the numbers of graduate students and numbers of tracks this seems about right to me, but I would yield the final word to Mieke. In terms of faculty, they are short handed right now, but they should be back to full staffing in the near future. Having and honors program that serves the top 10% makes good sense to me and it is in line with our initial conversations about keeping the programs large enough to fill classrooms but small enough to be elite. Public Health—now Health Studies, is just growing in leaps in bounds. They've just hired three tenure line faculty. Their proposal requires one of the most elaborate application processes and a GPA in the major of 3.67. I don't think we want to raise the bar higher than this. They have capped their HiM at 20 students which would be 10% of their majors. I am fine with sending Anthro and Health Studies forward, if I have answered your questions. If you will hang on to Bio, I will have a response shortly. As always, thank you! Lyn checked with Mieke Meurs and Michael Keynes and their responses are below: Hi all, The main concern on OGS's part is the use of 600 level classes for undergraduates. While it is OK on a case-by-case basis (or through bachelor's/master's) for undergraduate to take graduatelevel classes, 600 level classes are for graduate students and shouldn't be used in undergraduate requirements in any way. However, 500 level classes, while at the graduate level, allow for undergraduate registration without permission. As a result, we've moved to get rid of 500 level courses as core requirements for graduate programs. However, the graduate regulations do not forbid the use of 500 level in undergraduate program requirements. I can't speak for the undergraduate academic regulations. Michael Michael Keynes, PhD. Ok. My understanding was a little different, than Michael's, but I am happy with his version. Thanks. That was my main question. Thanks. Lyn __________________________________________ Virginia (Lyn) Stallings Vice Provost for Undergraduate Studies
