(remember peanut butter can stick to the roof of a child's mouth and form a glob). Never leave a small child unattended while eating. Direct supervision is necessary. Cut foods into small pieces, removing seeds and pits. Cook or steam vegetables to soften their texture. Cut hot dogs lengthwise AND widthwise. Think of shape, size, consistency and combinations of these when choosing foods. Children should sit up straight when eating, should have sufficient number of teeth, and the muscular and developmental ability needed to chew and swallow the foods chosen. Remember, not all children will be at the same developmental level. Children with special health care needs are especially vulnerable to choking risks. Children should have a calm, unhurried meal and snack time. Model safe eating habits! Pay particular attention to those foods, toys and household hazards mentioned that pose choking hazards to ensure child safety. Offer plenty of liquids to children when eating, but solids and liquids should not be swallowed at the same time. Offer liquids between mouthfuls. Become familiar with life-saving techniques such as child CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) and abdominal thrusts (Heimlich Maneuver). Use only a small amount of peanut butter when the child is ready and use with jelly, or cream cheese on whole grain breads Healthy FUNdamentals This month in Healthy FUNdamentals, I will be reading Me and My Amazing Body by Joan Sweeney. This book is a playful introduction to anatomy that explains all the important parts of your body, what they do, and why you need them in order to breathe, work, and play. We will also play fun games to help us learn the names of new body parts. Later in the month, we will be learning about healthy foods; always vs. sometimes foods, what food groups are, and where they belong on the food pyramid. We will read a book about healthy foods and what they do for our bodies called Good Enough to Eat by Lizzy Rockwell. Signing In and Out Located in front of the office is a Sign In and Out book. Please be sure you are always signing your child in for the day and out when you take them from Chesterfield Academy, as well as initialing by the time. These daily recordings of the children’s comings and goings are documents required by the state of Missouri and they must be kept up by the families in order for us to be in compliance with state regulations. We appreciate your cooperation! Page 3 Adventures in Enrichments ~ Ms. Kristen Hi CA families!! Since the start of the school year, our little learners have been hard at work in their Enrichment classes. The Phonics classes have been concentrating on learning their letter sounds through the Zoo Phonics program. There are even some kiddos who have started reading with our Reading A-Z books, which is so exciting! In Math we are really focusing on learning how to read a clock, recognizing numbers 1-30, and learning odd and even numbers. We’ve also been making lots of yummy treats in Cooking class! We just recently made our own bread and boy was that delicious! Our Super Scientists have been having a BLAST making their own lava lamps, exploring fizzy moon dough, and building bridges. Science class is always a good time! Our little mover and shakers have been having lots of fun in Music and Movement. We had a Beatles day where all we did was sing songs by The Beatles. Our favorite was “Yellow Submarine”! I am so excited to have some new friends in my classes! Here’s some pictures showing a few of my new students having lots of fun in Enrichments! Also, Congratulations to Max Franklin for winning the drawing for one month free of Enrichments because his Mommy attended a POPs Meeting! YAY!! Scholastic Book Club! At Chesterfield Academy, we are delighted to share that we love participating in Scholastic Book Clubs! The same amazing book flyers that you remember as a child are available today too! Over the years, Scholastic has grown and their book selection is enormous! You are not limited to what you see in the flyers that come home each month, either. By going online you can access all the books that are available through Scholastic. You can simply search for a specific title or you can select a flyer for any age between preschool up to sixth grade. Each time you purchase books for your child using our school/class activation code (LL4GG), you help Chesterfield Academy earn points! The points our families have helped us earn in the past have allowed us to purchase over 1,000 books for our school library & helped update class- room libraries each year! Be sure to watch for the Scholastic Flyer that will be coming home in your child’s cubby each month with detailed instructions on how to order! Spanish Newsletter ~ Ms. Manuella ¡Hola! Welcome to a new school year! My name is Manuella, I have been teaching Spanish at Chesterfield Academy since 2012. If your child is in the 3's, 4's or Pre-K room, he/she has 30 minutes of Spanish with me twice per week, and I will be sharing the highlights of the previous weeks in the monthly Chesterfield Academy newsletter! We always start with our "Buenos Días" song based on the "Are you Sleeping?" song melody. "Buenos días, buenos días ¿ Cómo estás? ¿ Cómo estás? Muy bien, gracias. Muy bien, gracias. ¿ Y usted? ¿ Y usted?" Ask your children about it, they enjoy singing it! The first theme of the school year was " All About Me". We practiced how to say our name in Spanish. We also do that when a new student joins the class! We made up a little song that we sing to each other clapping our hands: ¿ Cómo te llamas? ¿ cómo te llamas? ¿ cómo te llamas tú? Me llamo... Another big hit, particularly with the 3's, is this finger play song "Saco una manito". "Saco una manito, la hago bailar, La cierro, la abro y la vuelvo a guardar. Saco la otra manito, la hago bailar, La cierro, la abro y la vuelvo a guardar. Saco las dos manitos, las hago bailar, Las cierro, las abro y las vuelvo a guardar." ¡ Gracias! Ms. Manuella Picture Page Children at Chesterfield Academy learn through hands on experiences that don’t always result in a project to take home. Below are some pictures that show the learning taking place in our school!
