vnr ubbjn Fall 2016 z”ga, u,x From Jacob Cytryn, Director Somewhat regularly, I get asked the classic Camp Director question: “Nu, so what do you do the rest of the year?” Our work, of course, never ends; evaluating and reflecting on the previous summer flows seamlessly into preparing for the next one. Our relationships with campers, parents and staff members bridge multiple years and we welcome new members of the Ramah family every summer. It is our year-round work and your partnership that make what we do at camp possible, and that allow us to deepen, expand, and hone our reach from year to year. Below, I share reflections from early in the 2016 season that demonstrate what our little slice of Conover is about today. My hope is that Ramahniks of all ages can see themselves in this mirror. Over the last few days I’ve had the pleasure of walking around camp as things are fully up and running. The campus is abuzz with excitement, enhanced by the gorgeous weather of the last few days. Walking around the outside path of camp I encounter moment after moment of kids having fun and playing. Young campers play stretching games on the lower Kikar (central field), counting in Hebrew, before they head into the water; older campers are practicing with water polo balls as part of a swimming elective. Kayaks, pedal-boats, and sailboats colorfully dot picturesque Lake Buckatabon. Kayaks dot picturesque Lake Buckatabon Hebrew and Jewish Studies classes in the Sifriyah (library) classrooms are underway. I see one group of campers watching a recent Israeli television series and discussing it with their teacher. Our Tikvah (special needs) campers file out of their cabin, ready to embark on an overnight they will gleefully describe a day later as “awesome.” A boy and a girl vigorously volley back and forth over a tennis net as our Israeli tennis specialist, Noa, works on topspin forehands with a different group of campers on another court. Preparing for an upcoming game under the lights of our softball field on Saturday night, the Bogrim (9th grade) boys take fielding practice in the outfield, generally looking like they have been practicing together for a long time and eagerly cheering each other on after the rare mistake. A passionate group of Nivonim (11th grade) campers are developing their English play, an original piece of experimental theatre built around a chosen Jewish theme developed under the guidance of one of our senior drama staff members. Our Atzmayim (Tikvah Vocational Program) participants will soon return to camp from their job sites in Eagle River. Our Kochavim (4th grade) campers have been painting beautiful challah boards they’ll take home with them; Machon (10th grade) campers in both the Nagarut (woodworking) and Omanut (art) intensives are developing ambitious ideas for new additions to the public artwork at camp. I keep thinking about last week’s Torah reading, Parashat Naso, when we read the haiku-like priestly blessing. It is a blessing God instructs the priests to share with the Children of Israel and that is said by some families every Friday night before dinner, as well as regularly at lifecycle events. The blessing is for the recipient to encounter God in three ways: physical guarding, feeling God’s grace and love, and having peace. It is a blessing that implies an ideal state of feeling safe and comfortable enough to let go and be ourselves. It is a blessing parents intuitively understand for their children and it is a blessing many cabin counselors share with their campers every Friday night before services. The blessing also frames our mission and expresses our dream that our campers will A pre-Shabbat blessing experience a summer in which they grow as individuals and as Jews. Saturday, February 11, 2017 8:00 p.m. at Morgan Manufacturing, Chicago 401 N. Morgan Street Cocktails and dessert reception A wonderful evening of Ramah fun, friends, music and reconnection We hope to see you there! Event registration and details including Shabbat options at RamahAt70.com page 4 From Jonathan Sherman, President At this time of year, we often find ourselves planning for the future. The origins of this responsibility are found in the Torah. Just before Rosh Hashanah, we heard Moses tell the assembled community that God’s covenant with Israel is “not with you alone, but both with those who are standing here with us this day… and with those who are not with us here this day.” (Deut. 29:13-14). The rabbis explain that God’s covenant was made not only with those who stood with Moses, but with each of us and with those who will come after us. Camp Ramah in Wisconsin was founded in 1947 through the cooperation of the Chicago Council of Conservative Synagogues and the Teachers Institute of the Jewish Theological Seminary of America. Planning boldly for the future, Ramah’s founders envisioned a beautiful setting where children would experience vibrant Jewish living, learn Hebrew, observe Shabbat, and enjoy a variety of sports and other activities. A carefully selected staff served as role models for the campers. In its first summer, Camp Ramah welcomed 100 campers. Many of those original campers remain supporters to this day, and are actively involved in Ramah and the Jewish world. Several have seen their children and grandchildren follow in their footsteps and develop their own lifelong connections with Ramah. This past summer, we were fortunate to celebrate the 70th season of Camp Ramah in Wisconsin and the 18th season of Ramah Day Camp. Our two camps were the summer home for more than 1,000 campers and staff. Some of our campers spent time at both the overnight and day camps. Another 30 families brought their young children to Family Camp, where they experienced their first Shabbat on the shores of Lake Buckatabon. Just as Ramah’s founders laid a strong foundation for generations of campers, it is our responsibility to build for the future. In that spirit, we are now entering the second year of our successful Givah Campaign, which is raising critical funds for scholarships, programming, and site improvements at both camps. The most visible (but by no means only) project made possible by the generosity of our donors is the construction of new cabins and a moadon (activity center) for our Nivonim campers, the oldest campers at the overnight camp. Our staff is also busy interviewing new camper families and staff members in the United States and Israel, refining our budget for the coming year, and implementing recommendations from our recently completed strategic plan. Those recommendations will bring significant improvements in our educational, recreational, and special needs programming. We have come a long way since 1947. On February 11, 2017, our community will gather to celebrate the 70th anniversary of Camp Ramah in Wisconsin and the 18th anniversary of Ramah Day Camp. It will be an evening of fun, food, music, reflection, and looking toward the future. Please plan to join us as we carry on our obligation to build a strong Camp Ramah for our children and for those who will come after us. Givah Campaign The first year of the three-year Givah Campaign is now complete, and there is a great deal for which we all can be proud. The Ramah community contributed over 2,000 gifts in year 1 of the Givah Campaign, an all-time record. Through your generosity, scholarships were provided for nearly half our 2016 campers and innovative programs enhanced the 2016 season. Last but not least, construction on the new Nivonim campus is underway and is set to open summer of 2017. Nivonim 2016 with original cabins page 5 From Rabbi David Soloff, CEO Ramah Wisconsin at our core is about two amazing camps, the regional centerpiece Camp Ramah in Wisconsin (CRW) and the Chicago area Ramah Day Camp (RDC) that bring together over 1,000 campers and staff to experience Ramah camping each summer, and the 500 parents and children who participate in shoulder season programs, reunions, and events. Jacob Cytryn and Lori Stark share some of the highlights of each camp in their articles on pages 1 and 16. Photo highlights throughout this newsletter expand on the breadth and depth of the Ramah Wisconsin story. Like a computer with numerous programs running in the background, Ramah Wisconsin operates year round with programming for alumni, young families, and donors to support and extend the mission of each camp. We work as a team of professional colleagues running two summer camps, Family Camp, Tikvah and Atzmayim inclusion programs, and alumni programs. Together we implement a development plan to support all these efforts. We work closely with our dedicated lay leaders who give of their time to serve on the Ramah Wisconsin Committee. We are strategic partners with a network of USCJ synagogues, related day schools and community schools, foundations, community Jewish federations, as well as rabbinic and educational colleagues both in the U.S. and in Israel. The magical 70-day camp season rests atop the pyramid of this year round foundation. This summer, in addition to regularly visiting both CRW and the RDC, I traveled to Chicago, Madison, the Twin Cities, St. Louis, Omaha, and Kansas City. In the spring our team designed a plan to utilize the summer to continue to strengthen Ramah Wisconsin throughout our region. With Jacob, Adina, Lori and Benji running our camps, I went into the field to meet with groups of alumni, professional colleagues, camper parents and supporters. Together we discussed: How best can Ramah Wisconsin engage with young families living more than a day’s drive to CRW? How can CRW better share the narrative of the amazing work we do serving special needs populations? How can we best tell our story to the philanthropic community in each of the cities we serve? Can we cultivate strategic partnerships with local day camps to bring more first time campers to CRW paralleling what we have accomplished with RDC? I met with many alumni who were campers and/or staff in the 1980’s and 1990’s. As they shared their own stories and memories from their camp years, they expressed an interest in introducing Ramah to their spouses. This important topic was also discussed at length. Throughout the year I have the privilege of teaching Jewish texts to some of our lay leaders and alumni. It is inspiring to hear each of these leaders share how Ramah has had an impact on their lives and the lives of their families. As an institution we are 70 years old and also 70 years young. May we continue to go from strength to strength. Underway! The Givah Campaign continues and the goal for fiscal year 2017, which began on October 1, is to raise $2 million for scholarships, program innovations, our Tikvah programs, capital projects, operations and maintenance. Read more about the campaign including a virtual tour of the original cabins, a video of the cabin demolition, dedication opportunities for the new campus and information on purchasing a brick or paver in the new Nivonim walkway at givahcampaign.org. Construction underway on the new Nivo campus! page 6 Camp Ramah in Wisconsin – where fun We celebrated the expansion and renovation of Moadon Tikvah, made possible by the estate of Waldemar Lelewski through Lynn and Howard Rosen (shown above) and family. Five delightful Broadway musicals were presented in Hebrew and livestreamed to adoring fans. We welcomed nearly 60 campers entering 3rd grade for our action-packed Ruach Ramah introductory session. There was an enthusiastic turnout for island swims and early morning polar bear swims. Machon and Tikvah chaverim (buddies) enjoyed spending free time together playing games, taking walks and hanging out. Campers enjoyed a variety of awesome camping trips including a Nivonim canoe trek on the Flambeau River. page 7 and friendship build Jewish lives! The energy and fun of Friday afternoon Kikar dancing was a weekly highlight. Eight weeks of joyful Judaism experienced in a nurturing community of peers. Director Jacob Cytryn and Assistant Director Adina Allen, our dedicated Roshei Aidah and our energetic staff -including over 30 shlichim from Israel- combined talents to create phenomenal experiences for over 500 campers. 2016 Derech Eretz Award winners raised the profile of kindness, respect and warmth in camp. Ruth Messinger, former President of the American Jewish World Service (AJWS), engaged campers in a lively dialogue about her own commitment to social justice and public service and the approach of AJWS to combating poverty and health challenges in today’s world. Over 30 campers participated in the tizmoret, the orchestra that accompanied campwide events. Specialists in sports, music, outdoor education and the arts encouraged campers to try new experiences and improve their skills. page 8 Donor Recognition October 1, 2015 – September 30, 2016 *indicates Camp Ramah in Wisconsin Committee member © indicates my.ramahwisconsin.com peer-to-peer fundraising campaign Director’s Circle Gifts of $100,000 and above Anonymous (1) Zell Family Foundation President’s Circle Gifts of $50,000 and above Dr. Rebecca* and Daniel* Blumenthal The Crown Family Beverly and Richard Fink Nina and Arnie* Harris The Halevy Family Estate of Vivian Rice Susan and Marc* Sacks Dr. Margaret* and Alan* Silberman Rebecca and Richard Warner Rosh Aidah Gifts of $25,000 and above Jayme and Gary Ernsteen Marcia Cohodes and David Goldsteen David Kabiller Karen and Mitchell Kopin Nachshon Project Charles & M.R. Unlike his friends, his Bar Mitzvah took place in Prague, in the same synagogue that Alex’s grandmother attended as a child. Alex is the son of Tamar Newberger (Nivo 1979) and Andy Schapiro, the U.S. Ambassador to the Czech Republic. Alex is a third generation Ramahnik – his grandfather Michael Newberger was at Camp Ramah in Wisconsin in the 1950’s. The celebration was meaningful for the whole family on many levels. “To be back here not just as a Jewish family but also in the role of representing the United States, the country that gave my mother refuge and saved her life, surrounded by many members of both of our families, that was unforgettable,” Andy told the JTA in August. His Prague-born mother, Raya Czerner Schapiro, was 5 when Nazis occupied Prague. In 1939 she left Prague with her sister to join her parents, who were already in the United States. At camp last summer, Alex practiced for his Bar Mitzvah using a very special Torah on permanent loan to Camp Ramah in Wisconsin. Part of the Memorial Scrolls Trust, the 150 year-old Torah was found in an abandoned synagogue near Prague and over 40 years ago found a new home in our vibrant camp community. His tutor, Jon Adam Ross (a.k.a. JAR), said that he and Alex discussed the Torah’s provenance and “how we are informed by stories not only of time but also of place.” Many of Alex’s camp friends joined him in Prague for the Bar Mitzvah. JAR was there too and reflected, “It was inspiring and emotional to see the shadows of history eclipsed by the simchas of the present.” My.ramahwisconsin.com Mazal Tov and Todah Rabbah to campers Alex Schapiro, Hannah Ernsteen, Aiden Ernsteen and Benjy Kaufman for supporting camp scholarships in honor of their Bar and Bat Mitzvah celebrations. The my.ramahwisconsin.com platform makes it easy to set up a personal campaign. Are you marking a special birthday or anniversary? Celebrating a Bar or Bat Mitzvah? Organizing a basketball tournament? Running a marathon? Make it an occasion to support Ramah! Encourage your friends and family to give generously. Your investment in the Jewish future will pay dividends for years to come. Led by Rabbi Joshua Ben-Gideon, five members of the Madison community rode 260 miles to camp in July. Using my.ramahwisconsin.com they raised nearly $12,000 for camper scholarships! page 16 Alumni My 70th Anniversary Visit to Ramah Wisconsin by Dr. Burton Cohen The summer of 2016 marks the 70th season of Camp Ramah in Wisconsin, the first Ramah camp. I was fortunate to be a camper there in 1947, the initial summer. I say “fortunate” in two senses: fortunate to be part of a landmark event in the history of Conservative Judaism; and Burt (left) with Mayer fortunate because it was there that I made lifetime relationships and there that I would receive the impetus to embark on a career in Jewish education. I served as director of this camp for fifteen summers and later as National Ramah Director for fifteen years. However, until I received an invitation from my 1947 cabin mate, Mayer Stiebel, to visit camp, it had been many years since my last visit. Mayer had decided that he wanted to bring his children and grandchildren to Ramah this summer to celebrate his 85th birthday. He wanted me to join them. I could hardly refuse, especially when two of my own grandchildren would be first time Ramah Wisconsin campers. The visit was rewarding from start to finish. The natural surroundings, the lake and the woods, are as beautiful as ever. It was good to see that the campers are still thriving and Mayer and I were flattered that they were interested in our “ancient” history of this still vibrant enterprise. Here’s one story I shared: About seven years ago, I responded to an announcement by the new National Museum of American Jewish History that they were seeking artifacts pertinent to the development of the American Jewish community for their permanent collection. They accepted three of my items from Ramah’s first season, which have been on display at the museum from its start. First of all, there is the program for the banquet which took place on the final night of the first season, shown here. Second, there is a white paper napkin with the word eer (city) and a picture of Jerusalem imprinted by linoleum block, a souvenir from the first color war. The third item is a Hebrew letter reish cut from felt, the first letter of Ramah. I won this letter for speaking only Hebrew for a week. I never achieved the subsequent awards of a letter mem for the second week, and a letter hei AND a trip to Eagle River for a third week of spoken Hebrew excellence. Don’t miss these items when you visit the Museum in Philadelphia! We both came from synagogues in the Twin Cities with clergy very committed to the Ramah experience. This commitment was passed on to our parents and then to us. We both had older siblings who also attended camp before us, laying the groundwork for our future involvement. Although we both attended Camp Ramah, our paths never crossed because of our age difference. Even though we had never connected, when we met we had an immediate shared background that made it very easy to make decisions on how to raise our kids and explore Jewish life together as young parents. Those decisions included involvement in our local shuls, day school, and ultimately sending our kids to Camp Ramah in Wisconsin. We were so eager to reengage with camp after so many years that we visited the summer before our oldest son, Sam, was eligible for Garinim in 2009. We have been regular visitors ever since. Our entire family has had the Ramah Wisconsin experience. Steve was a part of Nivonim 1982 and Barrie was in Nivonim in 1985. Steve went to Seminar in 1983 and Barrie was on staff in 1987. Our oldest son, Sam, was a part of Nivonim 2015 and has just completed Ramah Seminar traveling to both Poland and Israel. Our daughter, Dani, will be a part of Nivonim next summer and our youngest child, Noah, will be in Bogrim next summer. We have seen firsthand how the Ramah experience shapes our youth in very positive and Jewish ways. As kids grow older and start to seek out secondary influences in their lives, putting them in an environment with such exceptional staff, many of whom are the brightest young minds in the Conservative movement, is magical. Our kids can all list a handful of Tzevet past and present who really shaped the way they view the world Jewishly. What is even more gratifying to us is the fact that they all want to be that impactful influence for future campers and give back to the camp community they have received so much from. From left: Sam, Dani, Noah, Barrie and Steve Orloff We find it remarkable that the Ramah Wisconsin community has provided our children with another family. Their cabin mates have become additional siblings that they have grown incredibly close to over the years. These kids will be their lifelong friends and will make up the next group of bright young minds. I think we can both agree that as excited as we were for our kids to have this special experience, we believe they have gotten much more out of it than we ever anticipated. There is a tremendous amount of competition today for summer activities but there is only one Camp Ramah in Wisconsin. It is at camp that our children obtain the Jewish literacy that will sustain them for their lives. In the process they also have an immense amount of fun. It is important for the Conservative Movement that Camp Ramah Wisconsin thrives and continues on for our grandchildren and great grandchildren. Because of this we currently support Ramah and have provided for it in our estate planning. Joining the Legacy Society was a natural step for us and so easy to do and we encourage others to carry on this sacred responsibility as well. We marked the occasion on the second day of camp with Yom Chai, which kicked off with an inspiring all-camp tefillah and the beautiful sound of young voices singing together. The rest of the morning was planned around “18 Things We Love About Ramah Day Camp.” During swimming, campers created pictures with 18 pool noodles. There were tons of fun activities like Newcomb (a variation of volleyball), gaga, dodgeball, and Israeli dancing. There was a teva (nature) hunt in the woods and a shira (singing) session to learn the camp song. There was even time for a mini-challah baking session. There was so much fun packed into one short morning! After an all-camp picnic around the tree house, campers made beautiful chai necklaces and cooled off in the pools. They enjoyed competing to balance 18 puzzle pieces, stack 18 cups, and use a straw to move 18 M & M’s as quickly as possible. Rebecca Fletcher, Jewish Experiential Educator from the ARK, helped campers discover how their 18 coins of spare change can make a big difference in people’s lives. It was quite a celebration! On a day like Yom Chai I am reminded of a keynote speaker at an American Camp Association conference who looked out across the room and said, “When people ask what you do for a living, tell them ‘I’m in the construction business.’ When they ask you what you build I want you to say, ‘I build great kids!’” Amidst all the playful activities and skill building that occurs in the swimming pool, on the sports fields and in the different specialty clinics, Ramah Day campers are learning how to compromise, negotiate and be kind, compassionate and resilient. They too are in the construction business; they are building friendships and their own vibrant Jewish community at Ramah Day Camp. Ramah Day Camp is a warm and nurturing environment where kids come to make great friends, grow socially, learn Jewish values and most importantly - to have fun! Campers entering kindergarten through sixth grade enjoy sports, swimming, music, cookouts, arts & crafts and so much more! Chicago area campers entering grades 3-6 can experience both Ramah Day Camp and Camp Ramah in Wisconsin in one summer at special rates! Ruach Ramah offers entering 3rd graders a 5-day taste of the overnight camp experience. Kochavim offers entering 4th graders the opportunity to spend twelve action-packed days at Camp Ramah in Wisconsin and the rest of the summer at Ramah Day Camp. Two sessions are available. Garinim (for entering 5th graders) and Halutzim (for entering 6th graders) offer four weeks at Ramah Day Camp and four weeks at Camp Ramah in Wisconsin.
