Camping
Goodbye to a
Special Boy
On April 30
the Givens Health
Center family lost a valued member
of our team that can never be replaced.
AJ Givens, the dog that lived here for 12 years,
left this world and will be missed by many staff
and residents. A lab mix, he came here to live at
age 2 when his first family began to have allergy
problems. He was a familiar sight all these years in
the living room, playing in the courtyards, laying
under the piano at worship services, walking
on the grounds with his “girlfriends” and going
on vacations with his pack on the weekends.
AJ made many children feel comfortable in a
place that is sometimes hard to visit. He made
people laugh and to some lessened the pain that
unexpected turns in life can bring. Always alert
to visiting dogs, but willing to share the space
with them, he made living here look easy. The
Eden Alternative, a movement that taught people
to recognize the value of pets living with humans
in long term care situations, teaches that 1 in 100
dogs have the right personality to live in this
type of home. As he aged, the last 2 years AJ had
lived with Joel Phillips, Dining Director of
Givens Highland Farms, due to some hip
problems. Joel shared that AJ saw himself as
“working” Monday – Friday and so Joel was
committed to bringing him here on the way to
and from work daily. He died from natural causes
and will be missed by many people whose lives
he touched.
WARM CAMPFIRE MEMORIES
My best friend had a man so sharp
he knew just how to roll a tarp.
Packed the cars and never blinked.
My sweetie caught my eye and winked!
Soon we all went down the road
to a forest where we could unload.
With trees so tall they kissed the sky
and spicy scents just wafting by.
We pitched our tents and gathered wood
then got the fire blazing good.
Making s’mores and telling stories
of ghosts in all their spooky glories.

June is national camping month! To recognize this
great American pastime, join us for the monthly
theme party to celebrate time spent in the great
outdoors. Decorations for the event will be straight
from the campsite so expect to see tents, lanterns,
and hiking boots while eating s’mores and Dutch
Oven desserts. In 2012, 38 million Americans —
or 13 percent of the US population – over age six
enjoyed camping. Camping is part of the American
tradition, allowing people of all ages and backgrounds
to reconnect with their extraordinary natural
inheritance. Come and relive the experience with
your Givens Health Center friends!
Guitars and mouth harps came out too
while we sang every song we knew.
A bottle of wine to warm our souls
shared as the fire turned to coals.
Then off to sleeping bags we went
snuggled warm inside our tent.
Next morning back to the city.
It’s over too soon, what a pity!
This camping trip I’ll never forget.
The peace I felt not replaced yet.
Dear friends all those years ago
imbedded in my memory so.
June Resident of the Month
The Givens Health Center resident of the month,
Wayne Faulkner, has led a rich and accomplished
life. Mr. Faulkner was born in Marshall, NC, on
January 1, 1923. After graduating from Cecils Business
College, Wayne moved to Franklin, NC, where he
began his career at Zickgraf Hardwood Company
and Nantahala Lumber Company. He worked
there for 43 years until his retirement!
Wayne has three children - Gerald, Donald,
and Beth - and two granddaughters - Lauren and
Jessica. He and his wife Helen had been married
for 62 years when she passed away in 2008.
In addition to being dedicated and involved with his
family and career, Wayne was an active member of
First Baptist Church in Franklin where he was on the
Board of Deacons. He was also on the Franklin First
Union Bank’s Board of Directors. Wayne cared deeply
for and was a leader in the Franklin community. His
daughter Beth says that the Franklin community
thinks of him as a kind and strong leader: “a pillar
of the community and a leader with velvet gloves.”
While in Franklin, he served others in numerous ways,
including helping people get bank loans, starting
community service projects, and offering incentive
programs so employees could work toward saving
money for homes and cars. In 1992, the Faulkners
relocated to Asheville and Wayne became a member
of First Baptist Church in Asheville. Mr. Faulkner is a

member of many community organizations including
the Order of Eastern Star Nequassa Chapter, the
Scottish Rite of Free Masonry, the York Rite Masonic
Lodge - Junaluskee, Oasis Shriners International,
and The Lion’s Club. Most recently, in 2014, he was
commemorated and received the Milestone Chevron
Award for 70 years of service as a Lions Club member.
Mr. Faulkner enjoyed a variety of leisure activities
well into his retirement. He was an avid gardener
and an accomplished woodworker. As a member of
the Givens community, he enjoys watching televised
sporting events.
Flag Day
The middle of June
is a great time for
a celebration - especially if it’s in
honor of Flag Day! This all-American
holiday commemorates June 14, 1777 as the day when
the Second Continental Congress adopted the flag
of the United States. President Woodrow Wilson
issued a proclamation in 1916 officially establishing
June 14 as Flag Day, but it wasn’t until 1949, under
President Harry S. Truman, that our National Flag
Day was created by an Act of Congress. However, it’s
not a federal holiday, so government offices, public
buildings, and schools aren’t closed on Flag Day.
Below are some questions to start discussion about this
celebration - maybe a good topic to share with
your tablemates!
Q: H
ave you ever attended a Flay Day parade?
When? Where? Share your memories.
Q: Have you ever participated in a Flay Day program?
What did you do?
Q: Why do you think the American flag is such
a powerful symbol?
Q: Do you remember observing Flag Day when
you were in school? What did you do?
Share your memories.
Q: A
lthough many people display their patriotism in
other ways, Flag Day celebrations seem to have
dwindled. Why do you think this is happening?
Q: F lag Day is not a federal holiday like the Fourth of
July. Do you think it should be? Why or why not?
