Steele Auditorium on the campus of California
University of Pennsylvanian on Sunday, February 12.
“Mom, Lyla’s been burned. Meet us at Mercy Hospital” are
words no grandparent wants to hear. Two years ago, Lyla
Joy Booher, at age 2, was burned by scalding hot coffee.
To keep scaring to a minimum and to ensure range of
motion, Lyla was required to wear a “burn shirt” 23 hours a
day for 18 months. “Burn shirts” cost $500 per shirt, with
patients needing 3 to 4 shirt changes per year. The shirts
are not covered by medical insurance.
Spearheaded by Lyla’s grandmother Mrs. Rebecca Booher,
with the help of Mrs. Elizabeth Husk, her Business
Education students, and the Administration, funds are being
raised to help victims and their families with the cost of
“burn shirts.” Burn Safety Awareness ribbons with
Dalmatian puppy heads, and t-shirts (Trinity Pride Friday
approved!) are being sold. In addition, a stained glass
lamp, compliments of Mr. and Mrs. Snoke, will be raffled off.
Also, in an effort to educate our students on burn safety,
coloring books, printed by the high school Learning Support
students, will be distributed in the elementary schools.
Mercy Hospital Burn Unit nurses will provide burn safety
education to high school students in phys ed, health and
science classes.
T-shirt order forms will be available on the district website
February 6 through February 17 - and included in this
newsletter - and may be returned to Mrs. Booher at the
High School.
The Dalmation ribbons will be available for $1.00 in the
Nurse’s Office in all buildings.
Please consider helping with this worthy cause.
The writing and artwork of all Gold Key honorees
will be submitted for national judging in New York
City where it is eligible for national awards and
scholarships. The 2017 national honorees will be
recognized in a ceremony in Carnegie Hall on June 7.

What a REACTION!
Trinity South 5th Graders celebrated the end of their Mixtures and Solutions Science Unit by planning
and conducting a Mentos and Pop chemical reaction! The students had a blast observing, recording, and
graphing data which was analyzed to see whether their hypothesis was correct!
Miss Zeh's 4th and 5th grade students recently
studied slavery and the Underground Railroad.
They learned about Henry Brown, a slave who
mailed himself in a box to Philadelphia to be
free. They also learned about Harriet Tubman
and how she risked her life to help free over 300
slaves. The students used their cause and
effect skills and their knowledge of irregular past
tense verbs to create a "box project," including
facts, a timeline and a text-support paragraph.

Students in Mrs. Johnson’s second grade at Trinity East learned about Helen
Keller. Throughout the week they read a biography, researched facts,
simulated what it was like for Annie Sullivan and Helen Keller, learned how to
do their weekly poem in sign language, wrote their names in Braille, and
practiced the alphabet in sign.
The Penguin’s Wives Association visited Trinity North to help pack the Blessings in a Backpack bags and to present Dr. Tully a
check to help maintain the program. Trinity North’s teachers and students send out a huge thank you to the Penguin’s Wives
Association for their generosity and help with this program. Visitors included: Jordan Sullivan, Brooke Markle, Kelsey Burton, Christina Sirignano, Alexis Fetherston and Veronique Fleury
who is presenting the check to Dr. Tully.

Science Fair….
MATHCOUNTS
MATHCOUNTS is a national math enrichment, coaching, and
competition program that increases enthusiasm and achievement in
mathematics. This fun and exciting competition rewards gifted
students for their mathematics accomplishments. The 2017
MATHCOUNTS competition was held at W&J on Saturday, February
4th. Conner Alder, Lucas Jones (team captain), Ben Kozak, and
Emma Malinak made up the TMS MATHCOUNTS team this year.
Kadyn Caruso, Rachel Chase, Jack Halulko, Brett Phillips, Kaylee
Spadaro, and Raymond Wang competed as individuals.
Congratulations to the TMS MATHCOUNTS team for coming in 2nd
place at the Washington County competition this year! In addition,
Ben Kozak placed 8th in the county as an individual. Well done!

Trinity’s Pride!
Madison Clark and Andrew
Perkins, 4th grade students at
Trinity South traveled to
Harrisburg, PA for the State
Farm Show in January.
Madison took 5th place with her
pig “Julie” and was recognized
as a Master in Showmanship.
Andrew took 3rd place with his
lamb “Jack”!
The second grade students at Trinity East are
investigating solids, liquids, and gases.

The students at West
had a fun time
learning with the help
of the Brain show!
It’s just like being on a TV game show
with all the questions, lights, bells,
whistles, dance moves & music…
Trinity East teachers, Ms. Leichliter and Mrs. West Emerich welcomed 4th and 5th grade parents to help assist with their
Shopping Wish List project this year. Volunteers were stationed around the room as students checked-in with them before
proceeding to the next step. Parents had a first-hand opportunity to check out our little East Mathematicians adding,
subtracting, and multiplying decimal numbers. What a fun-filled event for our intermediate East families!

Kindergarten and First grade students
at Trinity South enjoyed the 100th Day
of School by bringing in a collection
of 100 items, dancing 100 minutes,
and counting 100 pieces of popcorn
and then of course eating it!!!
Trinity West third graders celebrated
the 100th day of school by using
multiplication to gather 100 Fruit Loops,
they then sorted them by color, and last
used the data and created a bar graph.
We are 100 days smarter!!!

Science Bowl
Several of our 4th, 6th, and 7th grade gifted students participated in the
Science Bowl hosted by the Allegheny Intermediate Unit at the Carnegie
Science Center in late January. Students worked in teams to move
between four stations to solve various challenges to earn points for their
team. The challenges this year included a Calculation Station, a Barge
Building experiment, and Mystery Bags!
Trinity South Elementary was awarded a
$500.00 grant from Tractor Supply entitled
“Dig-it”. In the spring, students will be
growing a garden at Trinity South in order to
learn about the importance of agriculture. Students will be responsible for the garden
while gaining a deeper understanding of food
systems. We are excited to start this projectbased activity!
The students in Mrs. Yancich’s class have been
studying what it means to be kind. The children
have read “The Giving Tree,” by Shel Silverstein.
This book has brought about discussions of what
we can to do be helpful and kind toward others.
During the school day, the children are recognized
for performing acts of kindness. Some of the
wonderful things that have been observed include
offering a friend a chair, opening packages for
others at breakfast, and sharing supplies.
The children created a kindness bulletin board.
They researched and wrote kind words to display.

OPEN HOUSE EVERY MONDAY: We will be operating our "Open House" every Monday from 5 PM
to 7 PM. Please bring your own shopping bags/plastic bags when attending. There are no bathroom
facilities. If school is closed on Monday, open house will be cancelled.
WHAT WE NEED: Gently used clothing, infant to young adult size clothing. We are particularly in
need of coats, new socks and new underwear. If your church, club, employer, or civic group is looking
for an easy project, please consider doing a clothing drive for us. We area also collecting small
microwaves, coffee makers (like Mr. Coffee, no Keurigs please), toasters, electric skillets and
hotplates.
HOW DO I DONATE: Please drop your clothing/donations off at any Trinity school and our
volunteers will do periodic pickups. Please limit your donations to children's/teen clothing and shoes.
