Characterization in “The Necklace”
For “The Necklace” answer the 5 ?s at the end of the story
and then complete a full character analysis of Mathilde,
Loisel & Mrs. Forrestier (like “Rose of Emily”). Along with
discussing this, discuss and outline the following questions:
1. What actions bring out important traits Mathilde? Loisel?
Mrs. Forrestier? To what degree is each creating events,
or just responding to them? How would you describe
their actions: are they “good” or “bad,” intelligent or
stupid, deliberate or spontaneous? How do they help
you understand each? What do they show about the
character as a person?
2. In what ways are the Mathilde’s and Loisel’s major traits
strengths? weaknesses? Do these traits become more,
or less, prominent as the story progresses? Why?
3. Knowing all that you do about Mathilde and Mrs.
Forestier, what kind of a friends are they? Explain.
