Algaearemicroscopicsinglecelledformsofplantlifethatareintroduced
intothewaterbywindandrainfromtheatmosphere.Thereare30,000
differentvarietiesofalgaeallcontainingchlorophyll.Theyareoneofthe
hardiestandmostwidespreadlivingorganismsonthisplanet.
Therearethreemaincategories.
G R E E N A L G A E :-usuallyfloatingalgaethoughtheysometimesclingtowalls
Thisisalsothefastestgrowingalgaeandaccountsformost24hralgae
bloomsPoolwaterbecomesturbidwithagreengrowththatrendersthe
pooluninvitinganddangeroustouseasitisdifficulttoseethebottomof
thepool.Priortothegreencolorationappearing,thesidesofthepoolhave
aslipperyfeelandthewaterbecomeshazyandexhibitsahighchlorine
demand.
M U S T A R D ( Y E L L O W ) A L G A E :-appearsasayellowpowderydepositon
thepool,usuallyontheshadyside.Onceestablisheditischlorineresistant
andcanexistinthepresenceof3-5ppMfreechlorine.Thisisalsoa
commonalgaewhichgrowsinaquariumsinareasthatgetlittlelight.
B L A C K ( B L U E -G R E E N ) A L G A E :-evidentbytheformationof1to3cm
sizedblack(ordarkbluegreen)spots,tenaciouslyadheringtothepools
surfaces.Blackalgaeformsalayeredstructurewherethefirstlayer(which
chlorinemaykill)protectsunderlayersfromfurtherdestruction.Blackalgae
issimilartotheblackalgaethatisfoundonbathroomshowertilesandin
siliconeseamsnearthebath.Itisalsofoundinaquariumsasdarkblotching
ontheglasssides.Thisformofalgaeisveryslowgrowingbutveryhardy.It
isextremelychlorineresistant.
Analgaebloomcanturnclearcleanwaterintoagreenswampovernight.
ThepHcanclimb(asalgaeconsumescarbondioxidewhichhelpskeeppH
down),andthepoolwallsbecomeslipperyandhazardousunderfoot.Once
algaeisvisibleasubstantialproblemexists.Algaetakesincarbondioxide
andgivesoffoxygenlikemostotherplants.Mostbacteriafoundin
swimmingpoolstakeinoxygenandgiveoffcarbondioxide.Eachconsumes
theby-productsoftheotherforgrowth.Itisdesirabletouseachemical
programthatassuresbothbacterialandalgaecontrol.
P R E V E N T IO N O F A L G A E Aproperchemicalprogramofregularpoolmaintenancepreventsalgae
fromgrowing.ThismeanskeepingtheproperpHandrecommendedfree
chlorineresidualforyourpool.Thebestalgaecide(algaekiller)andalgaestat
(algaeinhibitor)isaproperlymaintainedsanitizerlevelof1-3ppMChlorine
or2-5ppMBromineforapooland3-5ppMChlorineor3-6ppMBrominein
aspa.Algaeisveryrareinmostspasandhottubsasthe"insulatinghard
cover"doesnotallowenoughlightforthealgaetogetafoothold.
Algaecidesarechemicalsaddedtothepoolwatertocontrolalgae.While
algaecidescankillalgaeathighdosages,mostareutilizedasalgaestats,
whichpreventalgaeformationwhenchlorineisallowedtobecome
depleted.

Thefollowingalgaecidesmustnotbeusedwhenthepoolisfittedwithan
ORPcontroller.IonsinthealgaecidecanelectricallyplateontotheORP
electrode'splatinumsurface,reducingitsreadings.Inanycase,acorrectly
controlledpoolshouldnotdevelopanalgaeproblem.
Q U A T S :-thelargestselling,lowestpricedalgaecides.Thesearemostoften
foundinactiveconcentrationsof5-10%.Such"quaternaryammoniumsalts"
aresurfactantsandifaddedinexcess,willcausefoamingonthepool
surface.Surfactantslowerthesurfacetensionofthewaterand"wet"algae
cellwalls.This"wetting"splitsopenthecellwallandkillsthealgae.Quats
requirelowerconcentrationsandamountsthanpolyquatstoachievethe
samelevelofprevention.Quatsaremostoftenusedasthepreventative
whilepolyquatsaremostoftenusedtogetridofexistingalgae.
P O L Y Q U A T S :-arenon-foamingalgaecidessoldinconcentrationsof30to
60%.Whilemorecostlythanquats,polyquatalgaecidesareveryeffective
notonlyongreenalgaebutalsowiththechlorineresistantmustardand
blackalgaeandworkwellatdestroyingvisiblealgae.
C O P P E R S A L T S :-Copperion(Cu++)isaveryeffectivealgaecideusedin
ponds,lagoonsandpoolstokillandpreventalgaeformation.Copperusage
cancausestainformation.Overtime,solublecoppersaltscanprecipitate
frompoolwateranddepositonpoolwalls,creatinga"blueing"effect.Inthe
presenceofchlorine,thesesaltswillturntocupricoxideandcausegreyto
blackstainingofthepoolwalls.
C O L L O I D A L S I L V E R :-Silverissimilartocopperinmanyways,colloidal
silverattachesitselftothepoolwallsandfloor,givingthesesurfacesa
residualandcontinuingalgaecidalaction.Silvercanalsocauseablack
stainingtooccuronpoolwallsifnotcarefullyadministered.Silverisalsoa
verygoodbacteriostatthatmayreducetheneedforchlorine.Someionisers
usecopperandsilverplatestoproducebothsilverandcopperionsinthe
water.

TotreatalgaeoncetheytakencontrolofapoolcheckpHandadjustif
necessary.Checkfiltration,filterpressureandbackwashifnecessary.

F O R G R E E N A L G A E youcanuseoneoftwomethodsorimplementboth.
Superchlorinatethewaterwithupto30ppMchlorine.Ifnecessary,24-48
hourslaterwhenthechlorinedropstonormallevels,addagoodall-purpose
algaecideaccordingtopackagedirection.Thenextday,vacuumthedead
algaeandbackwashthefilterifnecessary.Useofagood"Floc"canhelp
speedupthesettlingofdeadalgae.Inthecaseofheavyalgaegrowthitmay
benecessarytorepeatthetreatment.Afteralgaehavebeenvacuumed,
checkpH,adjustifnecessary,andinstituteaprogramofsuperchlorination
anduseofagoodall-purposealgaecide.Makesurethechlorinelevelis
maintainedatproperleveltohelppreventreoccurrence.

immediately.Unlikebrownalgae,yellowalgae,blue-greenalgae,orgreen
algae,thislittleguyformslayersandeachlayerformsascab.
Evenwhenyouhavegoodpoolwaterchemistryandpracticeexcellent
swimmingpoolcaretoa"T",itstillmightnotbeenough.Youneedtoget
rightonthisbecausethisbugger,ifleftonitsown,willeataholeright
throughyourconcrete.
S W IM M IN G P O O L A L G A E P R E V E N T IO N Properlybalancingallofyourpool’schemicalsandnormalswimmingpool
carewillgreatlyreduce,butmaynoteliminatetheopportunityforgetting
greenpoolwater,cloudypoolwater,pinkalgae,andyellowalgae.
Havingyourswimmingpoolchlorine,alkalinity,andhardnessadjusted
correctlyisveryimportant.Remembertobrushandvacuumyourpool
becausethiswillreducethedirtaccumulationandalgaeporesfromsticking
tothepool’ssurface.
SAFETY FIRST

Alwaystaketheproperprecautionindealingwiththesetypesof
chemicalsandreadthemanufacture’slabels.

Useheavydutyrubberglovesandgogglesandkeeppoolchlorine
outofreachofchildrenandpets.
•
BringthepH,alkalinity,andhardnessintoline.Neveraddchlorine
withoutfirstadjustingthesethree.AdjustyourpHto7.0-7.2.
ChlorineismoreactiveataslightlylowerpHlevel.Alkalinityto85100,andhardnessto150-250ppm.
Now,anythingoverthepHlevelof8.0andyou'reonlyusingabout25%of
thechlorine,whichmeans,you'velost75%oftheactiveswimmingpool
chlorine.Whenyouaddyourpoolchlorine,yourpHwillautomaticallygoup,
sogetthatpHdown!!

Brushthebottom,sides,andstepstoloosenanyalgaethatmaybe
adheringtothesurface.Purchaseahighqualityleafrake,(notthose
simplebluesquareskimmers)andscoopoutasmuchdebrisfrom
thebottomandtopofthepoolasyoucan.Ifyou'reable,makesure
thebottomdrainisclearandfreefromdebris.
•
Continuouslyrunyourfilterandbesuretobackwash2timesper
dayuntilthewaterhasclearedupsothere'snocloudypoolwater.If
youhaveaDEfilterbesuretore-coatthegridswitheachbackwash.
Alsowatchthatthepool’swaterleveldoesnotgetbelowa
minimumof2”fromthebottomoftheskimmer.
Youwanttogetridofthedeadalgae.
S O , W H A T ' S N E X T ?
Somemaysaythatapoolalgaecidespecificallydesignedforblackalgaein
swimmingpoolsisawasteoftimeandmoney,butI'vehadsomesuccess
withandwithoutusingapoolalgaecide.
Thealgaecideyouwanttogetisabitontheexpensivebutit'sworthitIt's
calleda"polyquat".Neveruseametalalgaecidesuchascopper.Youdon't
toaddanythingelsetothepool.
Firstistobrushthespot(s)withaheavydutywirebrush.Doingthiswill
loosenupthealgaeandhelpthechlorinepenetratethespot(NOTE:We
wouldadviseusingastiffnylontypebrushonsurfacessuchasQuartzon™).
Remember,swimmingpoolblackalgaehaslayerssoyouwanttogetas
manylayersoffaspossiblebeforeaddingthechlorine.
Thisisforaconcretepool(guniteswimmingpool)andnotvinylswimming
poolsasthismaytearyourvinylliner.Next,you'llwanttoapplygranular
chlorine,orCalciumHypochlorite,directlyontotheblackalgaespot.Before
youbegin,makesureyourpHisatminimum7.0.
Ifyouneedtodrainyourpool,youcangetchlorinetabletsandgotowork,
scrubbingtheaffectedareaveryhard.
Youhavetogetmeanwiththisbecauseitwillshownomercyforyou.Grind
itin,sotospeak.Also,takecareinusingdirectchlorineonyourvinyllineras
itmaybleachorstainthevinylliner.
Addthepoolchlorinearoundtheperimeterofthepoolandallowthe
filtrationsystemtorunforanother24hours.Vigorouslybrushyourpoolas
oftenasyoucan.Youhavetogettheblackalgaeupfromtheroots.
Allowyoursystemtorununtilthechlorineisdownto1.0-3.0ppm,normally
about2weeks,maybeevenlessifyouhaveastretchofhotdays.
Whatthisdoesisbringsyourchlorineleveluptoaninsaneamount,about
30ppm,butthisisblackalgaewe'retalkingabout.
Oncethechlorineisdowntoasafelevelandyourswimmingpoolchemistry
hasstabilized,youmayseesomeetchinginyourplasterfromthepool
algae.

D EFEATING A LGAE Algaedoesn'tneedtobethebaneofyourexistence.Thesimplestwayto
getridofalgaeisnevertogetitinthefirstplace.Ifyoumaintainthe
appropriatefreechlorine(FC)levelatalltimes,algaewillneverbeableto
getstarted.
Theearlieryoucatchalgae,theeasieritistogetridof.Whenalgaeisjust
starting,thewaterwillhaveadullappearanceandtheFClevelwillstart
fallingmorequicklythanusual.Ifyoucatchalgaeatthispoint,itusuallyonly
takesasingleapplicationofchlorinetowipeitout.
Onceyouhaveaseriousalgaeproblem,therearetwocrucialthingsto
understandaboutgettingridofit.First,algaeisconstantlygrowing.Ifyou
skipadaybeforeyouhavegottenridofitall,itstartsgrowingrightback.
Skipacoupleofdays,andanytimeandchemicalsyouinvesteduptothat
pointwillbewasted.
Whenyoufirststartfightingalgae,itisarace:youneedtokillthealgae
fasterthanitgrowsback.Theearlieryoucatchanalgaebloom,theeasierit
willbetokill.Or,ifthealgaeisalreadywellestablished,theharderyouhitit
atthebeginning,thefastertheentireprocesswillgo.Onceyouhavealgae
ontheropes,thingsgetaloteasier.Attheend,youneedtobethoroughto
makesureyougetitall.
Second,theFClevelyouneedtotargetdependsonthecyanuricacid(CYA)
level.ThehigheryourCYAlevelthemoreFCitisgoingtotake.Ifyoudon't
haveanyideaofyourCYAlevel,youriskeithernotusingenoughchlorine,
andfailingtogetridofthealgae,orusingtoomuchchlorine,andcausing
metalcorrosionandshorteningthelifeofyourvinylliner(ifyouhaveone).
IfyourCYAlevelistoolow,mostofyourchlorinewillbelosttosunlight,
insteadoffightingalgae.IfyourCYAlevelistoohigh,youwillneedhuge
amountsofchlorine,whichrapidlybecomesimpractical.

Algaecidesrarelyhelpandoftencauseproblems.Copperbasedalgaecides
cancauseunsightlycopperstainsthataredifficulttoremove,andcanturn
blondhairgreen.Linearquatbasedalgaecidescancausefoamingandbad
smells.Polyquatbasedalgaecidescanbeusedasapreventivemeasure,but
areineffectiveatfightingalgaeonceyouhaveit.Polyquatisparticularly
usefulwhenyouareunabletomaintaintheFClevel,suchasoverthewinter
orduringanascorbicacidtreatment.
Reducingthephosphatelevelcanhelppreventalgae.However,maintaining
theproperFClevel,whichyoureallyoughttobedoinganyway,worksjust
aswellandcostsfarless.Don'tbemisledbyaggressivesalestacticsinto
buyinganexpensivephosphatetreatmentthatyoudon'tneed.

notadangeroussubstance.Swimminginapoolthatisinneedofpoolblack
algaeremovalisnothazardoustoyourhealth.Theonlydangerintheblack
algaecomesfromthebacteriaitmightinviteintothewaterthroughits
waste.
Blackalgaeisthemostdifficultofalltypesofalgaetoremove.What
methodsworkonothertypesofalgaeisnotgoingtokillblackalgaeandthis
iswhatmakespoolblackalgaeremovalsuchachallenge.Evenifyou
vacuum,brush,andfilteryourpool,thepoolblackalgaeremovalisnot
goingtobecomplete.Poolblackalgaeremovalonlybecomesneeded
becausetherehasnotbeenenoughchlorineinthepool,butevenjust
addingmorechlorineisnoteffectiveinpoolblackalgaeremoval.
Poolblackalgaeremovalcallsforawell-roundedapproach.Firsttestthe
poolwaterforlevelsofchlorine,stabilizer,hardness,pHandalkalinity.If

Algaearemicroscopicplants.Twovarietiesarefoundinpools,thosethat
floatfreelyinthewaterandthemorepersistentvarietywhichimbedsitself
intoporesandcrevicesinconcreteandbetweentiles.Sunlight,carbon
dioxide,mineralmatter,nitrogenouscompounds(oratmosphericnitrogen)
andothernutrientsareessentialforalgaetogrow.
Algalgrowthsarenotonlyobjectionablebecauseoftheobvious
discolouringofthewater(i.e.turbidity),butalsobecausetheyareslimy,and
contributetoaccidentsinandaroundaswimmingpool.Algaewillalso
harbourandfosterbacterialgrowthandretardtheactionofchlorine.Their
reactionwithchlorinemayevengiverisetoodourproblems.
Heavyalgalgrowthswillincreasethechlorinedemandtoapointwherethe
ordinarylevelsoffreechlorinewillnotkillthemoff.Itisthennecessaryto
shockdosethepoolbymaintainingafreechlorinelevelinexcessof10mg/L
overnightwhenthepoolisnotinuse.Usuallythenextmorningthealgae
willbrushoffquitereadily.Ifnot,theshockdoseshouldberepeateduntilall
thealgaearekilled.
Presenceofalgaeinaswimmingpoolisanindicationthatthespecifiedfree
chlorinelevel(seeTable3.2)orsufficientalgaecideisnotbeingmaintained
inthewater.
B2 ALGICIDE PRODUCTS
B2.1 G E N E R A L Whenapoolisintendedtobeusedforbathing,analgicidemaybeusedbut
onlytogetherwithanappropriatesanitizer.Whenapoolisnotintendedto
beusedforbathing(e.g.duringwinter)analgicidemaybeusedwithouta
sanitizerforalgalcontrol.

ThesecompoundsareprimarilyalgicidesandassuchParagraphB2.1
applies.Quatscomplimentchlorineastheyareeffectiveonthewallsand
floorofthepoolwhilstchlorineismoreeffectiveinthebodyofwater.
Thisalgicideisusuallyappliedatweeklytomonthlyintervalstomaintaina
concentrationofabout2.5mg/Linthepoolwater.However,careshouldbe
takentoensurethatexcessiveamountsoftheproductarenotadded.Test
kitsarenotcurrentlyavailablefordeterminingtheconcentrationofthese
compounds.Thesecompoundsdonotdecomposereadilyandthemainloss
occursthroughsplash-outandfiltration.
Topreventthewaterappearinghazy,QuatsshouldNOTbeaddedforat
least48haftersuperchlorinatingthepool.Duringnormaldosingthereisno
needforatimedelaybetweentheapplicationoftheQuatsandthe
chlorinatedcompound.Inpractice,thereisnoproblemofchlorinatinga
poolalreadycontainingaQuat.
B2.3 P O L Y M E R I C C A T I O N I C C O M P O U N D S Polymeric,cationiccompoundshavemanypositivechargesalongtheir
molecularchainandsoarenotstrictlyquaternaryammoniumcompounds,
althoughtheyhavesimilarandsometimesbetteralgicidalpropertiesthan
Quats.ThedosagerateanduseissimilartothoseofQuatsandtheyshould
beusedinconjunctionwithanapprovedsanitizerduringtheswimming
season.Thesecompoundsdonotfoam,norturnthepoolwaterhazy.
B2.4 S O D I U M P E R B O R A T E T E T R A H Y D R A T E Sodiumperboratetetrahydrateisawhitefreeflowingcrystallinepowder.
Thisproductisastrongoxidizingagentwhichdestroysalgaeand
chloramines.Accordingly,duringthebathingseasonthisproductmustbe
usedinconjunctionwithanappropriatesanitizer.Whenaddedtopool

Copperinwateractsasacatalysttoreducetheactivityofchlorineand
bromine.Assuch,theuseofcopper-basedalgicidesmayincreasethe
demandforchlorineorbromineinordertocomplywiththeappropriate
concentrationindicatedinTable3.2.
CAUTION:copper-basedcompoundsinwhichthemanufacturerspecifies
