Chromebooks in the Classroom!
Chromebooks
We are mastering the art of the chromebooks in our class! These devices are making writing so
much more enjoyable! The students are typing their stories on Google Docs and sharing them with
me. Now, I can access their writing from home and make comments and corrections that they can
access at any time! The chromebooks are also great for getting more kids on Xtramath, as well as
utilizing our licenses to Learning A-Z.
Math
We are into unit 2 in math! If you did not get a chance to sign your child’s unit 1 math test yet,
please do so as soon as you can. They should bring the signed test back to school so I know you saw
1
it. I was pleased with the scores that the majority of the class received and I’m excited to get deeper
into unit 2. So far, we have worked on square numbers and finding the area of a rectangle. Please
keep encouraging your child to access Xtramath at home. Many students have already received a
certificate for completing addition! Extra practice leads to automaticity!!
Social Studies
Ask your student what they already know about the Midwest region! We learned some great
note-taking strategies to use to gather information about this region. We are focusing on the land,
the economy, and the culture. So far, we have only talked about the land. The students are creating
booklets that will contain important facts, details, and pictures of the region.
Science
We have been discussing physical characteristics of animals that help them to survive. We
discussed animal eyes and we will be moving on to organism relationships and interactions. We
have already discussed predator and prey relationships. Review with your child what these words
mean! Ask them about the eyes of predators compared to. the eyes of prey!
Reading
We are reading “Bud, Not Buddy” for our class read-aloud right now. This story is set between Flint
and Grand Rapids, MI, during the Great Depression. If your family has any books, articles, or
artifacts from the Great Depression, please feel free to send them in, or send in a picture! The
students are very curious about this time in U.S. history and I would love to have things to show
them as we learn about it. We are also working on inferring character traits, meanings of words, and
messages from the author.
Scholastic Book Orders
October catalogs finally went out today. If you are interested in ordering, please place your order
online by October 28th, using the code PD4MR.
Color Run
Thank you for all who donated for the PTA color run. Although our class did not win, the money
donated will benefit each and every one of our students here, at Roosevelt.
