The National Multiple Sclerosis Society, Upper Midwest Chapter is one of a 50-state network of chapters of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. The financial
statements of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, Upper Midwest Chapter present only a portion of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society’s operations, and they
include material intercompany income, expenses, assets and liabilities. Accordingly, the financials do not individually present a meaningful picture of the National
Multiple Sclerosis Society’s financial transactions as a whole.
The National Multiple Sclerosis Society, Upper Midwest Chapter, shares
a promise to improve the lives of the more than 17,000 people affected
by MS in Iowa, Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota and portions of
Nebraska and Wisconsin.
Whether you’re newly diagnosed, have lived with the disease for decades,
serve as a family caregiver, volunteer as an activist, participate in a Walk
MS or Bike MS event, hold a local fundraiser, give through your employer
or raise MS awareness in your community, we’re working together to end
MS forever.
We’re sharing our promise to address the challenges of everyone affected
by MS, and through tremendous community support, we’re moving that
much closer to a world free of MS.
Thank you,
Thank you,
Holly Anderson

VOLUNTEER AWARDS
Norman Cohn Hope Award
Michael Schrock
Mike Schrock joined the National MS Society, Upper Midwest Chapter’s Board of Trustees
in 2004 — since serving in a number of roles on the board and playing a key role in
developing the chapter’s enhanced MS Scholarship Program. He utilized his business skills
to create an idea for an endowment for the program, inspiring funders and leveraging
resources for two endowed scholarships. Mike has done an incredible amount of fundraising,
too, generating more than $120,000 from Bike MS and Walk MS, in addition to personal
gifts and his efforts to rally people as the captain of Team Pentair, which has raised more
than $230,000 over the last four years. Mike’s generosity, commitment and devotion has
a significant impact on the present and future of the Society and will continue to make a
difference for families affected by MS.
National Volunteer of the Year
Richard A. Knutson
Dick Knutson is a dedicated leader in the MS movement, serving on the Upper Midwest
Chapter Board of Trustees for more than 17 years and on the National MS Society Board
of Directors since 2008. Dick’s leadership spans two decades in numerous roles, locally,

center of each conversation and decision. In addition, he provides on-the-ground support
throughout the year, from working the registration table at Walk MS, to supporting
Bike MS cyclists, to speaking at recognition events. What sets Dick Knutson apart is the
amazing depth of his involvement with the Society. His commitment is an inspiration to
others. Dick’s positive attitude, ability to motivate others, generosity and passion for our
mission are qualities that made him the Society’s Volunteer of the Year.

Healthcare Professional of the Year Starfish Award
Dr. Jane Achenbach
Dr. Jane Achenbach has been treating multiple sclerosis patients for more than 20 years,
and for the past three years, she’s acted as president of the Minnesota Society of
Neurological Sciences. According to Dr. Achenbach, the challenge of diagnosing patients
and customizing their individual treatments is one of the most enjoyable parts of being a
clinician. Dr. Achenbach said, “When I see my first patient of the day, I’m happy because
it’s both a joy and a privilege.”
Care Partner of the Year Luminary Award
Andrea and Dean Blosberg
Andrea and Dean Blosberg are incredibly supportive of their children, especially their
daughter Emily, who was diagnosed with MS in 2011. Through a year of mysterious
symptoms, both Andrea and Dean provided encouragement through constant doctor
visits, and also took time to care for their other children. Their hard work and optimistic
attitudes are inspiring, especially since Dean lives with MS, too. When Dean was
diagnosed in 1998, Andrea stepped up to the challenge and helped him through each
relapse, while raising young children. Now, the whole family is dedicated to finding
a cure for MS as volunteers and fundraisers.
Philanthropist of the Year Award
The MARS Foundation
The MARS Foundation was organized to fund multiple sclerosis research to move us
closer to a world free of MS. In 2013, the MARS Foundation donated $100,000 to fund
MS research programs, and has donated well over $500,000 for MS research since its
inception. Founders Wayne and Marlene Anderson, Margie and Bill Scott, along with a
dedicated foundation board of directors, hold annual MARS Foundation Golf Classics
in Panorama, IA, and Carousel for a Cure in Story City, IA, to help raise funds.

The National MS Society is a collective of passionate individuals who
want to do something about MS now — to move together toward a
world free of multiple sclerosis. MS stops people from moving.
We exist to make sure it doesn’t.
We help each person address the challenges of living with MS by funding
cutting-edge research, driving change through advocacy, facilitating
professional education, and providing programs and services that help
people with MS and their families move their lives forward. The Upper
Midwest Chapter serves more than 17,000 people living with MS in
Iowa, Minnesota, North Dakota and South Dakota, along with several
counties in western Wisconsin and one county in Nebraska.
