Life Problems
OBJECTIVES
• To work on addition and subtraction.
• To count in twos and tens, and to double
numbers.
• To understand that a 2p coin is worth the same
as 1p and 1p, and is more than 1p.
L ANGUAGE
add, subtract, totals, double, count on/back • how many
more? how many less than? how many left? difference
between • change, costs, worth • arrangement, pattern
RESOURCES
Coins (1p to £1), dominoes, PCMs 6, 23, class shop,
price labels, dice.
This week we will try to consolidate using
mathematical ideas and methods to solve
problems. We will use coins and continue our
work on doubles.
• Who has the most? Least?
Teaching Input 1
o
• Your purse is very heavy with lots of 10p
coins. Could you exchange those for
another coin? Which coin?
• If I had 5p and I spent 1p, how much
would I have left?
• How many 10p coins for 20p? 50p? £1?
• If I had a 5p coin and a 2p coin, how much
would I have altogether?
Repeat for 5p and 5p, 10p and 2p, 10p and 1p
and so on.
• If I had 2p 1 2p 1 2p, how much would I
have? Double 5p, how much would I
have? Double 2p? Double 3p?

Teaching Input 2
c
The children will need a selection of coins. Ask
them to make the sum in the centre of each
‘money spider’ using coins. They record their
work. As an extension, the children choose a
coin to put in the middle of the spider and use
other coins to make up that sum.
coins (1p to 10p), dice
The children play in pairs. They take turns to
throw the dice, and take the appropriate
number of 1p coins.
Note: This will help them to appreciate that
different arrangements give the same total,
and also that addition using money is the
same as using cubes or counters.
• Can you exchange these for any other
coins? Six 1p coins can be exchanged for a
5p coin and a 1p coin.
• When you have a total of 10p, exchange
your coins for a 10p coin.
The winner is the one, after several turns,
with the most 10p coins.
PCM 23, coins (1p to £1)
d
• What have you done so far?
• Could you make any different
arrangements?
• Could you see any patterns?
d

• How much are you worth? How many
10p coins do you have?
• What can you tell me about the money
spiders?

COUNTING, READING AND WRITING NUMBERS, ADDING AND SUBTRACTING, MONEY AND REAL LIFE PROBLEMS
Teaching Input 3
o
• Can we say what double one is? Say one
and one is double one, which is two.
• What is double two? Double three?
Double four? Double five?
c
o
You or the child can choose the appropriate
number of apples to take away from each
tree.
d
class shop, coins (1p to £1)
The children make new labels for the shop.
The items should be priced between 2p and
20p (or 2p to 10p if more appropriate to the
children in the group). Give the children
20p worth of money, more if appropriate, in a
mixture of coins, for example, 10p, 5p and
five 1p coins.
• What can you buy? Can you buy anything
else?
complete set of dominoes
• Did you get any change?
The children may work in pairs.
• Could you have bought a beard and a wig?
Why not? How much would they cost?
• How many dominoes are there in a
complete box?
• Make a train of dominoes, with the ends
adding to seven.
d
Teaching Input 5
PCM 6
Teaching Input 4
i
• Did you check each time? Are you sure
you are right?
• Can we count in twos from 2 to 20? From
20 to 0 (zero)?
• Can we count in tens from 20 to 100? From
70 to 110? From 100 to 0 (zero)?
UNIT 30
• Which dominoes could you not use?
• Could you use all the dominoes? If not,
why not?
• Would you need more money to buy two
flowers?
Note: The questions are very important. It is
possible to learn a great deal about the child’s
understanding and level of development in
this way.
