dairy industry stems from growing up on
her family’s hobby farm where she leased
dairy cattle for 4-H. Lisa is involved in
Beta of Clovia sorority, MN Royal Executive Team, and Block and Bridle. Upon
graduation, she hopes to become a dairy
consultant or a livestock appraiser.
Vice President, Crystal Siemers-Peterman, found her passion for the dairy industry after being born and raised on her
family’s 2,500-cow dairy in northeastern
Wisconsin. Majoring in Agricultural and
Food Business Management, Crystal hopes
to pursue a retail sales career within the agricultural industry. She is involved in the
National Grocer’s Association, National
Agri-Marketing Association, and Lambda
Delta Phi sorority on campus.
Treasurer, Matt Ditsch, grew up on his
family’s crop and beef farm. Matt decided
to joing GDC in order to learn more about
the dairy industry. On campus, he’s involved in Alpha Gamma Rho fraternity &
Gopher Crops and Soils. Matt is currently
majoring in Agricultural and Food Business Management & Agricultural Communications and Marketing. After graduating December, he plans to work as a sales
agronomist at cooperative near his hometown.
Secretary, Nicole Krumrie, worked on a
dairy farm during high school and fell in
love with the industry. She joined GDC
because of the networking and personal
growth opportunities. Nicole is a senior in
Agricultural Communications and Marketing and hopes to use this major to work for
a dairy-related company. Nicole’s longterm goal is to dairy farm and be involved
in various agricultural groups. On campus,
she is active in Delta Theta Sigma
Little Sisters, Beta of Clovia sorority,
ACM Peer Mentor, and the Agriculture Education Club.
Reporter, Annie Culbertson, is a senior majoring in Agricultural Communications and Marketing. After
showing her first calf at three-yearsold, she caught the dairy bug fast, so
joining GDC seemed like an easy decision. Annie is involved in Lambda
Delta Phi sorority and the National
Agri-Marketing Association. Upon
graduation in the spring, she hopes to
connect her passion for communication and marketing, and work with or
for farmers.
Officer at Large, Luke Werner, is a
senior graduating in December who
is majoring in Animal Science with
an emphasis in Dairy Science. In high
school, Luke worked on a large dairy
operation, which sparked his interest
within the dairy industry. He is active
in Alpha Gamma Rho fraternity. After
graduation, Luke will be working for
North Florida Holsteins.
Advisor, Dr. Les Hansen, continues
to oversee the Gopher Dairy Club.

Youth enjoy 12th Annual
Gopher Dairy Camp
The 12th annual Gopher Dairy Camp kicked off on
June 12th on the University of Minnesota St. Paul Campus. 54 youth in grades six through nine from Minnesota, Wisconsin, and North Dakota took part in the threeday camp where they had the opportunity to gain skills
in showing dairy cattle, further their knowledge about
the dairy industry, and make new friendships.
Camp started with campers learning different showmanship techniques from Katy Drinkall and had the
chance to play icebreaker games with counselors and
campers. During this time, the campers were able to
compete, do odd tasks, or “suck up” to the counselors to
earn additional “Moo Money”, to be used in the Gopher
Gold Auction later that evening where they would purchase the calf they would use for the rest of the camp.
Jeff ‘Balc’ Balcom made sure the campers had a fun
and exciting time during the Gopher Gold Auction.
Monday morning started with the Accelerated Genetics Fitting Workshop. Later, Dr. Bob Horton from Ohio
State University returned to camp this year to teach
campers about dairy foods. After lunch, campers were
able to apply the fitting skills they learned to prep their
calves for the showmanship contest. The contest was
held in the Livestock Pavilion was judged by Jayne
Esch and Tyler Otte. After the showmanship contest
con- cluded, everyone headed over to CHS Field to enjoy the a St. Paul Saints baseball game.
with counselors Dane Thompson and Eric Houdek.
After the workshops, campers were able to have lunch
at Land O’Lakes to learn more about this great dairy
company. In the afternoon, campers had the opportunity to tour Poplar Hill Goat Farm, a milking goat farm,
and the Miron Family Dairy Farm. Camp ended with
an awards banquet that included recognition of the top
showmen, camp awards, and a last chance to mingle
with new friends.
Gopher Dairy Camp would not be possible without the
Tuesday activities began with workshops on dairy ge- help of many people including our counselors, alumni co-chairs, speakers, food service, and our generous

U of M Dairy Judging Team
is Back to Back Champions
Minnesota had yet another dominant year in the
dairy judging program. This year there were two
seniors, five juniors, and eight sophomores who
competed at multiple contests. As the teams traveled
around the country, they continued the success
Minnesota has come to be known for. The team has
now been crowned champion at eleven out of the last
twenty-one contests, no other university can claim
more than three.
The team consisting of Dane Thompson, Crystal
Siemers-Peterman, Gabriella Sorg, and Ethan Dado
competed at the National Intercollegiate Dairy
Judging Contest held at World Dairy Expo. This
team achieved a unique accomplishment this year to
complete their judging career for the University. For
only the eleventh time in history, a single university
won back-to-back titles at the National Contest in
Madison, WI. The team edged out the University
of Wisconsin-Madison by two points. To go along
with this accomplishment, the team was also second
placed in reasons with all four individuals placing in
the top eight in the oral reasons portion of the contest.
Individually, Thompson finished 2nd, SiemersPeterman placed 11th, Dado placed 15th, and Sorg
was 16th.
The team that competed at the All-American Dairy
Judging Contest held in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania,
consisted of Crystal Siemers-Peterman, Gabriella

Sorg, Laura Jensen, and Ethan Dado. The team
finished second overall to the University of Kentucky
and finished first in reasons by a sixteen-point margin.
Individually, Dado was 2nd and 4th in reasons,
Siemers-Peterman was 6th and 1st in reasons, Jensen
was 11th and 3rd in reasons, and Sorg was 16th
overall.
Most recently the team of Gabriella Sorg, Laura
Jensen, Austin Schmitt, and Ethan Dado traveled to
Louisville, Kentucky, for the Collegiate Dairy Cattle
Judging Contest at the North American International
Livestock Exposition. With a dominate performance
the team captured first place with all four individual
in the top five individuals overall. Dado was 1st
individually and 2nd in reasons, Schmitt was 2nd and
12th in reasons, Sorg finished 4th and 13th in reasons,
and Jensen placed 5th and was 5th in reasons.
Our success is due to the time and effort of
our dedicated coaches, Dr. Les Hansen, Scott
Ellinghuysen, Alicia Thurk, and Eric Houdek. Thank
you for your patience, advice, and the knowledge you
have enlightened us with. Another thank you goes
to the many farms who have hosted us so we may
improve our judging skills!

In the Blink of an eye,
100 years gone by!
Dairy Bar finds
“mint” success
In April 2016, the University of Minnesota’s St. Paul The Gopher Dairy Club was blessed to have an
campus celebrated 100 years of Minnesota Royal. This
event, often described as “St. Paul’s Homecoming
Week”, continued its legacy of entertainment, competition, and memories for all participating. The Gopher
Dairy Club was well represented.
excellent year at the Gopher Dairy Bar, aided by
nearly perfect weather and record setting State Fair
attendance. Net profits topped $150,000, which will
be used to fund Gopher Dairy Club’s valuable educational activities.
Starting the week’s festivities was the skits competition, in which Gopher Dairy Club’s jokes sent quite a
ripple through the room. The next night, members pitted their brains against other teams’, as they competed
in the quiz bowl competition. The milkmaid contest
was a highliht of the week in many ways, as club
members sang a new rendition of a 1972 Carly Simon
hit, rewritten to “You’re so Dane”, done in honor of
Dairy Club’s MN Royal King candidate, and much
loved senior, Dane Thompson.
New this year was the addition of mint as a permanent
flavor. It had been featured in 2014 and 2015, and its
popularity made it a valuable addition to the shake
flavor line up, which also included vanilla, chocolate,
and strawberry. Another new addition was a brand new
shake machine, purchased to replace an old, unreliable
machine.
Once again, MN Royal attendees were thrilled to
listen to a concert from the legendary Johnny Holms
Band, which brings all of campus together in a mutual
love of dancing and country music. During halftime of
the concert, MN Royal King and Queen were named.
Gaining the crowns were King Thomas Leopold and
Queen Rachael Rostad, a longtime member and leader
in Gopher Dairy Club.
Wrapping up the week was the showmanship contest.
A beautiful day for a show, Saturday brought many
alumni and friends to campus. This event showcases
the showmanship skills of experts, and challenges
many to try showing a new species, or to show an
animal for the first time. The club’s participation was
coordinated by MN Royal Representative Amber
Johnson and was represented in the royalty contest by
Dane Thompson and Johanna Knorr.

In 12 days of the State Fair, the Gopher Dairy Bar
used: 750 hours of labor, 800 cases of shake mix,
and 730 gallons of milk. These inputs served 47,000
shakes and 7,900 glasses of milk. In total, the Dairy
Bar generated $242,000 in gross sales, and were able
to keep expenses low, at just over $102,000.
In addition, the club received a generous sponsorship from Land O’ Lakes, to achieve a net profit of
$150,000. The club proudly serves exclusively Land
O’ Lakes dairy products, and is gratified to frequently
hear from customers that the Gopher Dairy Bar serves
the “best shakes at the Fair”!
Most importantly, the Gopher Dairy Bar gives club
members the opportunity to develop customer service
skills, share their knowledge and passion for dairy
products and the industry that produces them, and to
work as a team to financially sustain the club’s activities. No doubt, customers return year after year
because of the club’s delicious products and the fun
atmosphere provided by the staff.
