2017 New Hampshire Wildlife Package
Provided by the NH Wildlife Federation and NH Conservation Districts
Song birds, turkeys, New England cottontails, bobcats, and many others rely on shrub dominated habitat. A Wildlife Package
will help create this habitat on your property. We’ve selected a package that includes plants that will provide high quality
shelter and food to wildlife for many years. Each package contains the following bareroot trees and shrubs:




2017 Wildlife Package Plant Descriptions
Highbush Cranberry, Viburnum trilobum Not a true cranberry. Shrub has beautiful bright red berries fall and winter that birds love.
Grows to 6-10 feet high and 8-10 feet wide. Tolerates moist to well-drained soils, and partial shade to full sun. Purchase Size: 3-4’
bareroot.
Silky Dogwood, Cornus amomum This dogwood has brown-red stems, and off-white flowers that bloom in May and June. Abundant
blue berry-like fruit in late summer. It grows to 6-8 feet tall and 6-8 feet wide. Tolerates wet to well-drained soils, and partial shade to
full sun. Purchase Size: 3-4’ bareroot.
Gray Dogwood, Cornus racemose Similar to silky dogwood, but it has white flowers and white fruits. Grows to 10-15 feet tall and
10-15 feet wide. Tolerates moist to dry soils, prefers partial shade. Dogwood provide fruit, shelter, and nesting areas to many birds and
other animals. Purchase Size: 2-3’ bareroot
Serviceberry, Amelanchier Canadensis Serviceberry is a large shrub growing up to 15-25 feet tall. Has showy white flowers in the
early spring, and dark purple berries in the summer. Leaves turn orange in the fall. Tolerates moist to well-drained soils, and partial
shade to full sun. Purchase size: 2-3’ bareroot
Staghorn Sumac, Rhus typhina Known for dense, bright red fruit clusters, staghorn sumac is a great wildlife shrub and easily grown.
Grows to 15 feet tall. Tolerates a wide range of soil conditions, and partial shade to full sun. The fruit will persist through winter and
supply food for birds. The branches are velvety. Purchase size: 2-3’ bareroot.
Chokeberry, Aronia melanocarpa Shrub has flowery blossoms and colorful fruit. Grows 8 feet tall and 3-4 feet wide. Prefers moist
soil and full sunlight. White flowers bloom in May, has black fruits in the fall that can persist through the winter. Purchase size: 3-4’
bareroot.
Ninebark, Physocarpus opulifolius Shrub is named for its unique bark, which sheds in strips to reveal the inner bark. This densegrowing shrub provides cover for wildlife. Grows to 5-8 feet tall and 4-6 feet wide. Tolerates average to dry soils, and partial shade to
full sun. Purchase size: 2-3’ bareroot.
Elderberry, Sambucus Canadensis Medium sized shrub with edible dark purple fruits. Grows to 5-12 feet tall and 5-12 feet wide.
Tolerates wet to well-drained soils, and partial shade to full sun. Bears white flowers in the spring, and black berry-like fruits in the
late summer.
Arrowwood, Viburnum dentatum Shrub will grow multiple straight, upright stems with triangular, toothed leaves. Grows to 6 -10
feet tall, and 6 to 10 feet wide. Tolerates average to well-drained soils and partial shade to full sun. Flowers in the late spring with
white blossoms, and fruit in the summer with blue-black berry-like fruits. Purchase size: 2-3’ bareroot
Crabapple Trees, Malus Crabapple trees grow to 6-10 feet tall. Flowers come in a variety of colors. Fruit is very attractive to wildlife. You will receive 3 crabapple trees of miscellaneous varieties. Purchase size: ¾” diameter bareroot (about 5’ tall)

Wildlife Package Statement of Cooperation: I have seen or have reason to believe that there is wildlife that utilize native
shrubs (native birds, wild turkeys, New England cottontails, etc.) near or around the area to be planted. The plants will be established
and maintained as directed in an area away from buildings and roads in a manner to enhance wildlife populations.
