DAy SpAS Light, airy, bright and brand new: the SpaQ at QT Port Douglas offers services with Australian brand Uspa products. The new SpaQ in Far North Queensland’s Port Douglas will certainly invite comment—but it’s not only the tropical tones and whimsical interior design that will give SpaQ a point of difference over the other Port spas. Q Spa reaches FN T he Q could stand for ‘quirky’, but perhaps then ‘spa’ is an acronym for ‘stu-pendous aesthetics’. Following conversion from Rydges Sabaya Resort, the spa launch on 28 March was earlier than expected, and the spa’s presentation has made a powerful first impression. The third SpaQ (following openings on the Gold Coast and in Sydney last year), also marked a milestone for SpaQ development and operations manager, Naomi Gregory: her 30th spa opening. “The look of the spa is definitely light-hearted and fun,” Naomi says. “We played up the designer concept by including the ‘accessories’ section on the menu.” The idea is that 30-minute foot, massage, hair or facial add-ons accessorise main treatments to finish off the experience. LaGaia organic herbal teas complement the spa’s palette as well as guests’ palates. 80 | Images courtesy of QT port Douglas Unusual elements, like globes on ropes and retro murals, provide a light-hearted sense of play to SpaQ treatments. As per the SpaQ model in its other locations, guests are encouraged to book time at the spa and then pick their treatment on the day according to how they feel and what they need, in consultation with the therapists. The complexity of the ‘freshly-picked’ and ‘accessories’ style of booking—requiring AUSTRALIA’S PRINCIPAL PROVIDER OF MASSAGE EQUIPMENT adept flexibility from the spa manager as well as multi-skilled therapists—will be directed by highly experienced spa manager Hayley Close. Hayley has overseen spas at Dunk Island Resort, for the Taj Group in India and most recently at The Sebel Cairns. The décor reflects the spa’s attention to detail, which allows guests to choose the treatment they need on the day. Unlike Sydney, which also offers Kerstin Florian treatments, the Port Douglas location exclusively uses Australian Uspa products for both body and face. The signature SpaQ organic tea blend by LaGaia comes in mismatched cups; guests can get comfy in sheepskin rugs; funky design elements include wall art with a 60s period vibe and sunshine-evoking staff uniforms. Wooden floorboards throughout the property keep a tropical boardwalk feel to the bright open spaces and clean lines of the interiors. The spa houses five treatment rooms (one decked out for couples treatments) as well as locker rooms and a relaxation lounge.
