Lesson 1 "By the Dawn's Early Light: Understanding the Lyrics and Their Influence," teaches the story behind The Star-Spangled Banner and the bombardment of Fort McHenry through multimedia resources, primary source documents, and reading activities. Lesson 2 "Our Cause It Is Just: The Causes of The War of 1812," investigates the arguments for and against war with Britain by role-playing congressional leaders in 1812. Lesson 3 "Land of the Free, Home of the Brave Becoming the Anthem," explores patriotic songs about the United States and why the U.S Congress adopted The Star-Spangled Banner as the national anthem in 1931. Lesson 4 "Between their Loved Home and War's Desolation: Marylanders Defend Their Home," uses local history to learn how Marylanders responded to the War of 1812 and the legacy of the war on the Chesapeake region.
