Read the definition and answer the question. The course options provide specific suggestions for enrolling in a language class. I. Native Speaker Question: Course options: Definition: A person whose first language is Spanish and who is able to communicate at the speaking, reading, writing, and listening level comparable to a native speaker of the language who lives in a Spanishspeaking country. Are you a Spanish native speaker? If your answer is –Yes-, you are not allowed to enroll in Spanish 111 or in Spanish 112. You may consider upper level Spanish courses based on the department’s offerings each semester. You may consider other languages, such as French 101. II. Heritage Learner Question: Course options: Definition: A heritage learner is a person who may understand Spanish and who communicates in English or in code-switching by mixing Spanish and English in the same sentence. Are you a heritage speaker? If your answer is –Yes-, you are not allowed to enroll in Spanish 111. It is highly recommended that you enroll in Spanish for Heritage Learners. You may consider other languages, such as French 101. III. Advanced Placement (AP) student with no Transfer Credits: Question: Course options: Are you a Spanish advanced placement (AP) student? If your answer is –Yes-, you are not allowed to enroll in Spanish 111. You may take the CLEP (College Level Examination Program) test. If you do not pass the test, you may enroll in Spanish 112 or another upper-level division course. You may consider other languages, such as French 101. Definition: Advanced placement students enroll in high school in courses that provide similar parameters to a college-level course in a particular discipline (such as AP Spanish). False Beginner 2 Question: Course option: Definition: A false beginner 2 is a native speaker of languages other than Spanish who has studied Spanish for two or more years, approximately two to six years ago. Are you a false beginner 2? If your answer is –Yes-, it is highly recommended that you enroll in Spanish 112. V. False Beginner 1 Question: Course option: Definition: A false beginner 1 is a native speaker of languages other than Spanish who has studied the Spanish language for two or more years, approximately seven to ten years ago or more than 10 years ago. Are you a false beginner 1? If your answer is –Yes-, it is highly recommended that you enroll in Spanish 111. VI. True Beginner Question: Course options: Definition: A true beginner is a learner who has never studied the language in the classroom. True beginners are learners who have not had any exposure to the language at home or in a Spanish-speaking country. Are you a true beginner? If your answer is –Yes-, it is highly recommended that you enroll in Spanish 111. If a student has studied other languages in the past, such as French, Portuguese, German, and/or Italian, they should enroll in Spanish 111.
