Properties of Matter
Properties of Matter
•
Properties of Matter – set of
characteristic by which a substance
is recognized.
•
Extensive Properties – properties that vary
with the size of a sample
–
•
Ex. Mass, Volume, Length…….
Intensive Properties – properties that are
not dependant on the size of the sample
–
Ex. density, melting point, boiling point, chemical
reactivity
•
•
•
Physical Properties – properties that can be observed
without chemically changing the substance
–  ex. color, taste, hardness, melting pt. etc.
Chemical Properties – properties that describe how a
substance interacts with other substances
–  ex. rusting, combustibility, reactions w/ other
substances …
*All chemical properties are intensive. Physical
properties can be intensive or extensive
•
Density – Quantity of mass occupying a unit of
volume
–
It is a ratio of mass to volume.
•  D = M/V
–
–
Density is an intensive physical property
It can be affected by temperature and pressure.
