Properties of Matter Properties of Matter • Properties of Matter – set of characteristic by which a substance is recognized. • Extensive Properties – properties that vary with the size of a sample – • Ex. Mass, Volume, Length……. Intensive Properties – properties that are not dependant on the size of the sample – Ex. density, melting point, boiling point, chemical reactivity • • • Physical Properties – properties that can be observed without chemically changing the substance – ex. color, taste, hardness, melting pt. etc. Chemical Properties – properties that describe how a substance interacts with other substances – ex. rusting, combustibility, reactions w/ other substances … *All chemical properties are intensive.
