Physical or Chemical Change?
In this lab, you will observe a series of changes and use your
observations to determine if they are physical changes or

Do NOT open the bag. Place a bar magnet on top of the bag, and try
to separate the iron filings from the sand. Record your observations.
OBJECTIVE
• Describe the
difference between
a physical change
and a chemical
change.
MATERIALS
For each group
• bag, sealable
plastic
• beaker
• effervescent tablet
• iron filings
