President’s Message: John Glovka
John Aasness is laid up with painful sciatica nerve problems. Our prayers are
with him. On May 16 I fell at home, taken by ambulance to ER, laid up for 2
weeks. Doctors determined my right hip is worn out, resulting in knee pain and
disequilibrium. I go in for hip replacement on July 12, will be out of action for 2
or 3 weeks, so will not be able to participate in the planned July 16 Lodge cleanup project. If whoever is present that day empties our mailbox, there may be a
written proposal – actually 3 options, concerning sale of our property. Any member is free to read this material. John Aasness has a copy.
I concur with those who think the year starts with Labor Day – school is open,
football is in season, for years the new cars would debut in September. So, our
thanks for the volunteers on the 16th. Lets have a good turnout for the Fall season.
Fraternally,
John Glovka
Social Committee: John Aasness
Hope everyone had an enjoyable summer and
are ready to get back in the S.O.N. mode. Our
next meeting will be August 6th, 10:00AM Association Mtg; 10:30 Business Mtg; and 11:30
Potluck. August 13th is the Scandinavian Dinner—happy hour at 5:00PM and dinner at
6PM. Several people were at the hall on 7/16
to help with clean-up. Thanks to all who were
there to help. The Association Mtg on August
6th will be to discuss our options regarding the
sale of the lodge property so
plan to be there. Once again,
hope all had a safe enjoyable
summer and kept cool!
Our work party tackled the closets
first. Marta and Lillian sort table linens and table decorations.

Litt Humor… One Sunday Morning
One Sunday morning, the Lutheran pastor noticed Ole standing in the foyer of the
church staring up at a large plaque. It was covered with names and small American
flags mounted on either side of it. The old Norwegian had been staring at the
plaque for some time, so the pastor walked up, stood beside Ole, and said quietly,
'Good morning Ole.'
'Good morning Pastor,' he replied, still focused on the plaque. 'Pastor, vat is dis?' The pastor said,
'Well, it's a memorial to all the men and women who died in the service. Soberly, they just stood
together, staring at the large plaque.
Finally, Ole's voice, barely audible and trembling with fear asked, 'Vich service, da 8:30 or da

St. Olav’s Day
Celebrated across Norway on July 29, Saint Olav’s Day is an official Flag Day and Norwegian feast day commemorating the accomplishments, contributions and memory of
Olav II Haraldsson, otherwise known as the Patron Saint of Norway, Norway’s Eternal
King or Saint Olav.
Olav was the first king to hold effective control over all of Norway, and was also responsible for establishing and spreading Christianity in Norway. After spending time as
a Viking warrior in the Baltic region during his teenage years, and later discovering
Christianity during his time in England, Olav returned home to Norway in 1015 where he fought for control of
a country ruled by petty kings. At just 22 years old, Olav was accepted as the first king to reign over the entire
nation Norway. Upon receiving military pressure from the king of Denmark and resistance from some citizens
because of his enforcement of Christianity, Olav was forced to flee the country in 1028. After two years of
hiding in Russia, Olav returned to Norway to reclaim his throne. It was at the Battle of Stiklestad near Trondheim in 1030 where he was ultimately killed. The Icelandic tales from historian Snorre Sturlasson speak of
miracles that occurred during the battle as well as at the king’s grave in Trondheim. In the year following his
death, Olav was declared both a martyr and a saint.
Each year in celebration of Olav, the Saint Olav’s Festival or Olavsfestdagene is held in Trondheim. Taking
place from July 28 – August 6, festival activities include concerts, lectures, pilgrimage and free events along
with celebrations and services at the famous pilgrimage destination Nidaros Cathedral.
As an additional way to celebrate St. Olav’s Day this year, take a walk along the pilgrimage routes known as
St. Olav Ways. Whether you’re able to start the actual pilgrimage to the Nidaros Cathedral in Trondheim, or
want to make the journey at home by independently tracking your walking mileage through the Sons of Norway Virtual Pilgrimage and Sports Medals program, beginning the pilgrimage route can be a great way to celebrate Saint Olav this July.
Foil-Baked Norwegian Salmon with Roasted Asparagus
Serves 4
Adapted from salmonfromnorway.com
4 5-6 oz Norwegian salmon fillets • 4 tbsp butter
• 4 sprig tarragon • 1 lemon
• 3 tbsp extra virgin olive oil • ¾ lb asparagus
• salt • pepper
Preheat oven to 375°F. Cut lemon into slices and set aside. Tear a 12"
square section of foil. Lightly butter the center of the foil and place a single
salmon fillet. Season with salt and pepper and top with a piece of butter, sprig of tarragon and slice of lemon.
Fold sides of foil together to create a tightly sealed package. Repeat steps with the remaining fillets.
Wash asparagus and trim ends. Arrange in single layer in an oven-safe casserole dish and drizzle lightly with
olive oil. Season with salt and pepper. (For added flavor, substitute salt and pepper for garlic salt and lemon
pepper.) Bake asparagus for 10-12 minutes and salmon fillets for 12-15 minutes or to desired temperature.

Community Support Allows the Draken Harald Hårfagre to Sail
on to Chicago posted on Wed, Jul 20 2016 1:05 pm by Melissa Johnson
(from Sons of Norway Website– www.sofn.com)
Sons of Norway has learned that due to its fundraising now totaling more than $56,000, the Draken Harald
Hårfagre Viking ship will continue its voyage to Chicago as part of Tall Ships Challenge® Great Lakes 2016.
Statement from the Draken Harald Hårfagre: We are so grateful for all the people engaging in our efforts to
continue our expedition in the Great Lakes. It is because of your generous donations we are able to continue!
The fundraiser through Sons of Norway has been crucial in the decision to keep on sailing to Chicago. The
struggle is not yet over; we still need to find a way to go further than Chicago. We still need your help. With
your continued support and donations, we know that reaching Green Bay and Duluth is now a possibility.
Please help us sail further! To donate: www.sonsofnorway.com/draken.
Sons of Norway CEO Eivind Heiberg stated, “The generosity of Sons of Norway members, many other individuals and committed community partners to allow the Draken’s voyage to continue is an incredible testament to all who share our mission to promote and preserve the heritage and culture of Norway. Our endeavors to shine the spotlight on the Draken’s tour are of supreme importance to the thousands of people anticipating her arrival in Chicago, Green Bay, Duluth, Oswego, New York City and Mystic Seaport.”
Sons of Norway is committed to raising additional funds to help the Draken team accomplish their goals for
the entire Great Lakes voyage, recognizing that thousands of people are anticipating its arrival at multiple
Great Lakes ports this summer.
