The 1,100 acre campus is in a rural valley, surrounded by the Blue Ridge mountains. The Swannanoa River passes through the middle of campus. Campus land includes the forty acre main campus, a working farm, and hundreds of acres of forested land. Hiking trails criss-cross the campus. In spite of the seeming isolation of the campus, its close proximity to Asheville and Black Mountain provides for a variety of off campus activities and cultural experiences. Sustainability is woven into the fabric of Warren Wilson. It is grounded in our rich history of place and purpose, embedded by generations of community members who have modeled our fundamental commitment to connect values to action. The practice of sustainability flows from the College mission, which serves as our compass for responsible citizenship, and from our unique liberal arts model of engaged learning. http://www.warren-wilson.edu/admission/application/ Come to Guidance for a college visit request form. Students must sign up for a pass in order to go to the library during a study hall. Any student may use the library during a lunch period or an unassigned period (1 or 9). Students who wish to go to one of the academic tutorial labs should obtain a pass from their subject area teacher and present that pass to their study hall teacher. Upon arriving at the tutorial lab, students should be sure to sign in to document their attendance. Students may attend a tutorial lab during their lunch period or an unassigned first or ninth period without a pass. All students may take advantage of the after school Conference Period to meet with their own teachers for extra help. Suggested Reading about the College Application Process Good books give you helpful perspectives and food for thought on how to approach the college process. The not-so-good ones use scare tactics and lingo to convince you they know something no one else does about beating the admissions “game.” Colleges That Change Lives, Loren Pope Less Stress, More Success, Kenneth Ginsburg and Marilee Jones The Gatekeepers, Jacques Steinberg Building Resilience in Children and Teens, Kenneth Ginsburg College guides (such as Princeton Review, Yale Daily News, and Fiske) are great too…just use them as a starting point of exploration rather than the final verdict on a particular place. Also, check out: College is a Journey, Not a Destination This is a fabulous article to share with your child who will be graduating in just 10 short months. It is a quick read. It was written by Martha O’Connell, the executive director of Colleges That Change Lives, a nonprofit organization that focuses on a student-centered college search process.
