Math 60 4.3: Scientific Notation Elementary Algebra Scientific Notation can be used to write super large and super small numbers easily. Scientific Notation looks like: 10 . This portion can be an approximation rounded to the nearest tenth or hundredth. and always consists of a decimal number (always one digit to the left of the decimal) times an appropriate power of ten. The “times” or multiply symbol used with Scientific Notation is generally the cross or “” symbol. The decimal portion of this notation will either be to the nearest tenth or hundredth, however rounding to the nearest hundredth is more common. Remember a positive exponent on the power of ten number corresponds to a large number, and a negative exponent on the power of ten number corresponds to a small number. If you are unfamiliar with Scientific Notation please consult the official rules on pages 251–252 in your book.
