Usefulness of the Editor Note Field (/ENTE) in CAS REGISTRYSM Database Science IP®, The CAS Search Service. CAS REGISTRY database, the gold standard for chemical information, contains more than 68 million unique organic and inorganic chemical substances, such as alloys, coordination compounds, minerals, mixtures, polymers and salts, and more than 63 million sequences. In REGISTRY, many substance records with incompletely known structures or complex mixtures contain the Editor Note field (/ENTE). The /ENTE field provides more information on unfamiliar product designations, names (synonyms), or lab codes, and gives a description to better understand the structure and its use. Substances with /ENTE fields commonly include: Commercially available product names Products made from mixtures of natural products Biologics You can find /ENTE information for specific substance records using the standard default display IDE (substance IDEntification) format in REGISTRY. For example, you can EXPAND and SEARCH on a product designation using the Chemical Name (/CN) field to locate the REGISTRY record. DISPLAY will show the default format IDE including various information such as the /ENTE field for substances lacking structures. Also, you can search by CAS Registry Number® (CAS RN) or the name(s) of the substance in databases with and without CAS RN indexing. Example 1: IDE display format for Tridemorph, a complex mixture. => FILE REGISTRY => SEARCH BAS 2203f/CN => DISPLAY L1 ANSWER 1 OF 1 REGISTRY COPYRIGHT 2012 ACS on STN RN 81412-43-3 REGISTRY The /ENTE field indicates this substance ED Entered STN: 16 Nov 1984 CN Tridemorph (CA INDEX NAME) is a fungicide with a structure OTHER NAMES: consisting of a complex mixture of CN BAS 2203F alkyl groups with likely variable CN Calixin CN Calixin 86 OL percentages of each alkyl chain length. Substances retrieved through structure searching lack the /ENTE field in REGISTRY because a structure is available to display. Incompletely known structures include those with undisclosed material compositions, or where exact structures are unknown, such as biologics (Apelin in Example 2). When structural information becomes available, CAS updates the record and the substance becomes structure or sequence searchable. In REGISTRY, compounds can be indexed by structure as “Incompletely described substances” (IDS) in the Class Identifier (/CI) field. This is done for compounds whose molecular formula is known, but for which the exact structure is not known (e.g., the location of specific substituents). IDS compounds are indexed by structure and can be retrieved in a structure search. In summary, the Editor Note field can be used to describe substances lacking an exact composition or for complex mixtures. This information provides a better understanding of the product since no structure is available. You can retrieve references to substances with /ENTE field information by searching their CAS Registry Number in CAplus and other databases on STN. STN provides access to key science, technology and patent databases, and is the premier single source for the world’s disclosed scientific and technical research. STN databases such as CAS REGISTRY can be accessed through STN Express®, STN® on the WebSM and STN Easy®.
