REPORT TO THE COMMUNITY 2014-2015 CONNECTING THE DOTS TO END HUNGER 2 NORTHWEST HARVEST COMMUNITY REPORT Northwest Harvest Board of Directors 2014-15 Our mission is to provide nutritious food to hungry people statewide in a manner that respects their dignity, while fighting to eliminate hunger. Our vision is that ample nutritious food is available to everyone in Washington state. Box 12272 Seattle, WA 98102 800.722.6924 northwestharvest.org facebook/nwharvest @nwharvest It takes all of us to make sure hunger stops here A message from Chief Executive Officer Shelley Rotondo Years after the end of the recession, food bank lines around the state are still at record levels. Organizations like Northwest Harvest are working harder than ever to meet this need, while focusing on new priorities, like nutrition and health, which work hand-in-hand with existing food distribution efforts to directly impact communities across the state. It takes a little less than four hours from Seattle, past breathtaking Cascade Mountain scenery, to reach Leavenworth “Icicle” Station on Amtrak. Leavenworth, a charming Bavarian village along the Wenatchee River, is the ultimate tourist destination. But its people face a challenge no less daunting than the peaks looming over main street: a tourist economy that leaves too many permanent residents struggling, often dependent on local food banks like Community Cupboard. “The cost of living is almost as expensive to live here as parts of the outer Seattle area,” notes one resident who raised four children alone while living and working in town. “Food costs are just as expensive here.” Many struggle with the low wages they have come to expect in the tourist economy. Why stay? “Some people… can’t afford to move. This is where the work is [in our area].” Notes another resident, simply, “This is my home.” Others struggle to keep their families afloat. One resident is a full-time caretaker for his 89-yearold mother. “I can’t work—it’s a 24hour job.” He relies on his mother’s Social Security check to provide for the family. “Without the food bank… it would be rough living. [And] we’ve got the grandkids three days a week.” Significant support for Leavenworth’s food banks comes from Northwest Harvest warehouses in Kent, Yakima and Spokane. They dispatch trucks laden with food drive donations, nutritious fruits and vegetables and staples like rice and oats to bring the bounty of our state to more than 380 similar food banks, meal programs and high-need schools statewide. With too many in our state still struggling, communities around Washington are rallying around a new movement and a new cry: hunger stops here. “A number of first time ever folks coming to the food bank. Seeing seniors and families with kids coming most often.” —Vashon-Maury Community Food Bank, King County NORTHWEST HARVEST COMMUNITY REPORT We gratefully acknowledge the leadership support from individuals and organizations who gave July 1, 2014 - June 30, 2015, including anonymous donors. I guess I do get around. What strikes me most about Washington? Our sheer abundance. 15 million acres of wheat and beans, apples, pears and cherries, potatoes and onions. World-class grapes and every fresh vegetable imaginable. All grown right here. Sun, soil and water. We have it all. At Northwest Harvest I help hundreds of Washington farmers channel their seconds, their over-production, through us and on to 380 community food banks throughout Washington—tens of thousands of pounds of fresh produce a week. Farm to food bank. Yes, I get around. I talk to lots of people. And what I know is that politics aside, we mostly all agree that no one who lives among such abundance should go hungry. Ever. Community Harvest’s Farm-to-Food Bank Program Community Harvest currently operates as part of MEND, a multi-service nonprofit In the Upper Wenatchee River Valley region. Community Harvest engages volunteers in produce recovery and gardening projects, and we spoke with Beth Macinko, Community Harvest Gleaning Coordinator, to learn more about their programs. How does Community Harvest build and maintain relationships with farmers? We try to touch base with all our previous donors every year sometime in the winter and see if they want to continue being part of the project. The primary way we stay in touch throughout the season is checking in at farmers markets, since they are Does the organization work with farmers to receive feedback? Are there any plans to develop new programs? We try to check in with farmers in the winter months to see how the project worked last year and how we can improve for the upcoming season. We also have done donor surveys after gleans in the past. We’re working now on how the program can grow, by training volunteer glean leaders to increase our harvest capacity, and we’re partnering with a church to offer cooking classes so people have the knowledge to prepare some of the fresh whole foods they are able to get at the food bank, and a purchasing program would be great eventually. Are there any program elements that you feel are unique to Community Harvest? great program called Veggie Vouchers. Every year they fundraise a pool of money to go into a special checking account. The Cupboard prints vouchers and hands them out to food bank clients who want to participate. Another thing that is a little unique about Community Harvest is that we are based in a small food bank that has three fridges for cold storage, but we are open six days a week and we have found other partners to help make the program work logistically and have a greater impact on our larger community. It is a story of waste and lost opportunity. How do we change this story? Roughly nine years ago, a handful of people from several Spokane community agencies met to discuss a simple question: “How can we find more food to feed those in need in our city?” Gregory Edwards, an AmeriCorps/Vista volunteer with the Spokane Neighborhood Action Project, led the meeting. He had been assigned the task of finding new food sources for their Thursday night “sack dinner” outreach in downtown Spokane. All agencies and ministries present shared a common challenge: securing new supplies of food for those in need. Someone floated an ‘out of the box’ idea…why not form a “coalition” to approach local area restaurants and challenge them to donate prepared food which would otherwise be thrown away? The idea resonated with everyone present—and the Feed Spokane Coalition was formed. The Feed Spokane Board noted that they wanted very much to emphasize their focus on food safety. They’ve not only partnered with the Spokane Regional Health Department, but have facilitated a number of important educational opportunities for their programs and especially for their meal site kitchen supervisors. Spokane. The goal this year is to take the story and the ideology outside the food industry and garner greater support from the community at large. Longer-term benefits to the Spokane community include not only ‘rescuing’ food and feeding hungry people, but also saving thousands of food pounds from ending up in the waste stream. Feed Spokane is an alternative story whose time has come. Along with partners like Northwest Harvest, Feed Spokane is quickly becoming a vital piece in the puzzle of eliminating waste and hunger by telling an alternative story of opportunity, community and hope. Feed Spokane is now working with 30 meal sites, 30 coalition participants, and 25 grocery and restaurant operators who support eliminating hunger in Donors Gregory and Mary MacDougall Andrew and Roopal MacDuff Ross and Lisa Macfarlane Sharon Mackenzie and D. Not fancy, but filling and nutritious. Our idea was to supply community food banks with regular shipments of staples—rice and beans, pasta and oats, canned goods and produce. Regular deliveries that could be rounded out with local food drives. All year long. Free of charge. Our basic menu has proven to be a great way to feed the hungry throughout our state. The need grew. So did we. Our relationships with Washington food producers convinced us to build our capacity, adding millions of pounds of fruits and vegetables per year. Today, nearly two-thirds of our distribution is produce. We’ve matured into a hunger relief network, with trucks, warehouses and volunteers that stretch from Grays Harbor to Spokane, supplying over 380 hunger relief programs in every corner of our state. Thirty volunteers who show up every week to make bulk more manageable for small food banks. Food producers store their inventory in giant 1,400 pound bins—totes, they’re called. When they donate their overstock or their seconds, that’s how you get it. Who can handle a box of peas the size of a Volkswagen? Team Tuesday can. We turn 1,400 pound boxes of frozen peas into 700 two-pound bags in 45 minutes flat. Freezer to freezer. Same for corn, carrots, rice and other staples. That’s what we ship to food banks all around Washington. Twice a month, free of charge. We’re a good crew—30 of the thousands of volunteers who keep it all running. Come to think if it, we’re why Northwest Harvest can do what no one else can. I am Lynn McGuire and I am proud to be a Volunteer at Northwest Harvest. Donors Richard and Sharon Reuter Michael J. In the struggle for wellness, a nutritious meal can make all the difference. Chicken Soup Brigade improves the nutritional health of individuals living with chronic illnesses. Comprehensive food and nutrition programs work towards reducing symptoms, minimizing side effects, and providing much needed comfort. Resources include grocery and meal programs and nutritional counseling. Grocery bags, which include glutenfree, dairy-free, vegetarian, vegan, and culturally-appropriate options, are nutrient-rich to meet specific nutritional parameters and can be tailored depending on dietary preferences, medical conditions, and cultural practices. Nutritional counseling is offered by dieticians to assess specific needs and to implement changes that work within the client’s lifestyle. Chicken Soup Brigade began in the early 1980s as a meal program for those living with HIV. Over the last 10 years, Chicken Soup Brigade has expanded its mission to offer resources across King County to a wider breadth of people, including those with kidney disease, diabetes, multiple sclerosis, In July of 2014, Lifelong opened the doors on a new meal production and warehouse facility in south Seattle. The facility houses meal production, warehousing, and other operations. Chicken Soup Brigade will be able to increase production for their grocery and meal programs, which both aim to stabilize health and improve medical outcomes. Improved medical outcomes help to prevent institutionalization, decrease human suffering, and reduce costs. Chicken Soup Brigade hopes to build on their current work though engagement with public policy. Reaching out to vendors and others in the larger sector will help create a dialogue to improve the quality of food in the donation stream. Chicken Soup Brigade’s focus on the community lends itself well to the conversation of providing local, organic food and forging relationships between farms and food banks. This inspiring program continues to improve upon current programs at their new facility. In addition to feeding 400 people a day at their meal program, the Millionair Club also hosts a fully operational Hydroponic Urban Farm in their basement! Their latest endeavor, a new kitchen rental program that highlights as a culinary incubator for budding culinary businesses, is one example of their inventiveness. Brent Herrmann, Director of Programs and Lindsey Webb, Food Programs Manager, are pragmatic in their approach to innovative ideas. “The Millionair Club’s meal program kitchen serves breakfast and lunch, and closes after 2:30 pm,” Brent explains. “We wanted a way to utilize that space to greater capacity and bring in an alternate source of revenue.” Since they began the program in September, the program already has three tenants, and is looking towards expansion. Current occupants include a caterer, farmers market baker, and a specialty foods producer. Lindsey hints that a new baker of gourmet dog treats may soon be whipping up canine culinary creations in their kitchen. While not all partners have a commercial kitchen to spare, the concept embraced by the Millionair Club is one to emulate. Additional space at your facility can be rented to neighborhood organizations or businesses. Offering this kind of support not only provides a service to the community, but also strengthens and develops local commerce, publicity, and Brent Herrmann and connections. Yet, even with school meals and food banks, one in four children in our state struggles with hunger. Northwest Harvest’s Three Squares program provides food to students in 50 highneed schools, where a high percentage of students receive free or reduced-price meals. A Three Squares pack is filled with nutritious, kid- friendly food for children who have limited food at home in the evenings, weekends and during school breaks. This past academic year (September 2014 - June 2015), Northwest Harvest operated the Three Squares program in nine school districts in Washington, providing more than 76,000 take-home bags and inschool snacks to at-risk students selected by school coordinators for the program. KIDS SUMMER FOOD CLUB During a typical school year, a student potentially has access to breakfast, lunch, snacks, after-school meals, and weekend meals. Most of these are made possible through predominantly Federally-funded programs and engaged community members. What happens during the summer? These are all school-year based programs. During the summer months there are limited avenues for children to get food putting increased pressure on families for these three months. There is a Federal summer meal program that provides one meal at a specific site. These programs run anywhere between June and August, but rarely the whole summer. Even more, currently in Washington State only 11% of children who receive free and reduced cost meals during the school year are accessing free summer meal programs. There is a huge gap where there are either too few summer meal sites or located too far away. The families in these areas are typically considered highneed and are most likely also utilizing their local food bank. We want to leverage this point of access for kids. That is why we launched the Kids Summer Food Club in August 2014. This program serves kid-friendly food to areas where 1) we have partner programs, 2) no near summer meal sites, and 3) where over 50% of the children apply for free and reduced meals during the school year. We see the summer food gap and the potential to help feed kids year round. The Kids Summer Food Club rounds out our services by providing kid-friendly foods throughout summer in highneed geographical areas. “A client was sharing that the food bank supplemental is her only source of fresh fruits & vegetables. Now that she is expecting, any dairy is an added blessing.” —Cusick Food Bank, Pend Oreille County 15 16 NORTHWEST HARVEST COMMUNITY REPORT Northwest Harvest Hunger Response PARTNER PROGRAMS As of June 1, 2016 On the front lines of distributing food Ocean Shores Food Bank Quinault Community Food Bank Salvation Army -
