7. Inspiring Stories
Summary of James Godson Bleak Story:
- Promised in a general meeting before leaving England that his
entire family would reach Zion safely
- Family in the Martin Handcart Company 1856
- with wife Elizabeth and four kids (James now at age 27)
- Wyoming blizzard; severe cold; 15" snow, cholera, deaths
- Marie's husband and 3 sons perished
- James was near death, wrapped in blanket, left on trail (a common practice)
- Handcarts had to press on until they camped for the night
- Marie asked wife Elizabeth - where is James? Left on the trail, near death
- Marie said that is not right because the family was promised safety
- Marie takes handcart, brings James back to camp and helps him recover
- James became a counselor in St. George temple presidency, recorder, historian
- James was present when founding fathers appeared to Wilford Woodruff
(Note: our kids and grandkids need to know this story of their ancestor)
Summary of angel Moroni statue on Hill Cumorah created by T.K.
•
Heard the church acquired Hill Cumorah property (1929)
•
Made seven proposed unrequested sketches of statue / monument
•
Often spoke to the Brethren about a monument on the hill
•
Sought inspiration on Ensign Peak (in the dark)
•
"Asked the Lord which one would be the right one
•
Light appeared "and he could see every one of the seven sketches"
•
"Saw an angel pointing with his finger and heard, This is the one"
•
"How will I approach the Brethren? What will they think? Have I done the right thing?"
•
Angel said, "You go to the Church offices in the morning. They will be waiting for you"
•
(Told wife that Moroni visited him; experience too sacred to elaborate on)
•
Next morning; "laid before them the seven drawings that depicted the monument and Moroni"
•
"Unanimously adopted the design that the heavenly finger had pointed to the previous night"
•
Commissioned to sculpt a statue, a granite pillar and base; required five years; dedicated in 1935
(Note: this is a grandfather of a member of the Fairway ward)
