Hi! My name is Abigail Ashun- Sarpy. My friends call me Abby Sarpy. I’m a final year student at the University of Ghana, Legon; studying for a Bachelor of Arts Degree in French & Linguistics. I was in France last academic year for a year abroad language immersion programme, and this is to share some few thoughts with you about the importance of partaking in the year abroad programme. Before leaving for France, I could barely speak any french. Sure, three years in Legon had taught me some things, and my high school basics were not so bad either. However, I lacked the speaking skill and my writing of the language was not much to write home about. My listening comprehension skills were close to nonexistent. I was, for these reasons, very passionate and excited about the year abroad programme since level 100; and by God’s grace, I got to spend ten months in Poitiers, France! At the beginning of my stay in Poitiers, I experienced considerable difficulty in expressing myself. I could barely understand the french accent. In the shops, with the bus drivers, at the bank, I kept saying “pardon”. It was really frustrating. But I was determined and so rather than give up, I worked on my listening comprehension. Taking advantage of the high quality internet, I patronised online TV channels. This really helped to improve my stock of vocabulary and also my understanding of the accent. I also made some friends in my hall who despite their teasing, never failed to correct my mistakes. I tried to speak french at any given opportunity. Despite all these efforts, I felt I had improved very little at the end of my first semester. I still could not sustain a conversation effortlessly. However, as the second semester progressed, I noticed considerable improvement in my french; although I still felt I could do more. At the end of my stay in France, I was of the impression that I had embarked on a failed venture. I was not speaking as well as I had hoped to. I was regretful that maybe, I could have done more, stepped out of my comfort zone more. But returning to Ghana and UG campus proved me wrong! It turns out that I had improved, a lot! I see the impact in class, when what the lecturer says is no longer an alien language to me; with my friends, when we are now able to chat in french (not without some difficulty-LOL!); and when I’m reading. Going for year abroad is good, very good! Today, when someone asks me: “Parlez- vous francais?”- I no longer say: “Un peu”!
