2016-2017 Curriculum Blueprint Grade: 9-12 Course: Algebra 1 Approximate Time: 4 days Module 11: Solving Systems of Linear Equations Learning Goal The student is expected to solve systems of equations graphically or algebraically using the substitution or elimination methods. Students will be expected to justify steps and check answers with other methods. Essential Questions 1. How can you use a system of linear equation so solve real-world problems? 2. How can you find the solution of a system of linear equations by graphing? 3. How can you solve a system of linear equations by using substitution? 4. How can you solve a system of linear equations by adding and subtracting? 5. How can you solve a system of linear equations by using multiplication and elimination? Unit Overview This unit focuses on solving systems of linear equations and inequalities, with and without technology using graphing as well as elimination and substitution. During the unit, students will also gain an understanding of the different types of systems, what kind of solution a system may produce, and how to model situations through the use of systems. Finally, the unit touches upon piece-wise functions, including absolute value equations and inequalities. Vertical Progression MAFS.8.EE.3.8: In grade 8 students solved a system of two equations algebraically and graphically in two variables and understood that the solution represented a point of intersection on a graph that satisfies both equations simultaneously. Solve systems of linear equations by any method. Justify the method used to solve systems of linear equations exactly and approximately, focusing on pairs of linear equations in two variables. Solving Linear Systems by Graphing (A-REI.3.6) Core Resource: Lesson 11.1 (HMH Book) MAFS.912.A-REI.3.5: (DOK 3) Prove that, given a system of two equations in two variables, replacing one equation by the sum of that equation and a multiple of the other produces a system with the same solutions. Recognize and use properties of equality to maintain equivalent systems of equations. Justify that replacing one equation in a two-equation system with the sum of that equation and a multiple of the other will yield the same solutions as the original system.
