CE-MARC in DAILY SCHOOL LIBRARY LIFE:The two examples (Earthworms & Slavery and Emancipation)
are Multi-Genre and Multi-Age. Selections are strongly correlated to Academic
Standards. Selections represent titles that can be used to directly/explicitly
teach reading strategies that proficient readers use to comprehend/make meaning
from text. Selections are made to provide resources to differentiate
instruction for struggling readers/on grade level readers/proficient readers.
Effective comprehension strategies are:
Prediction
Think Aloud
Text Structure
Visual Representation of Text--Graphic Organizers
Visualization
Summarization
Questions/Questioning the Text/Generating Questions
Clarification
Compare and Contrast
Inference
Recognizing the Author's Purpose
Cause and Effect
READ TO LEARN--Eathworms....... elementary crowd
Start with "Diary of a Worm" Cronin--delightful picture book that follows a
fictional story about an earthworm and his best friend Spider (2005 title is
coming "The Diary of a Spider"). This title is filled with factual info about
worms + can be used as a research/writing model for preparing a final project
on animals--the Diary of Your Animal to include the following info--where do
they live, what do they eat, etc. This ensures that information will be used to
creat meaning--plagiarize proofing the assignment. On to nonfiction--I
especially like "Wiggling Worms at Work" by Pfeffer. For a read aloud how about
"How to Eat Fried Worms" by Rockwell.
READ TO LEARN--Slavery and Emancipation.....middle school/high school crowd
Start with David Adler's biography, "Enemies of Slavery"--predict from the
cover--visual clue--Abraham Lincoln is on the cover, textual clue--the
title--what is slavery, what is an enemy. Use a K-W-L graphic organizer to
record what they KNOW about slavery or enemies, Use the WHAT to record
questions to guide inquiry (teacher generated and student generated. Note that
we have not even started into the book. Read Aloud page 10 on Abraham Lincoln.
On to Russell Freedman's "Lincoln: A Photobiograhy"--read page 130--contents of
Lincoln's pockets. (Use American Memory--Library of Congress website to show
digital images of the contents OR July 4, 2005 issue of "Time" magazine that
features Lincoln. I would use these two titles to spark interest for a unit on
The Civil War, Civil Rights, Social Justice, Presidents, etc.
Relation to the MARC 658 Curriculum Term tag....
Use it to enhance the record for teachers and librarians to select just the
right title to use are part of an instructional unit
Use it to enhance the record for teachers and librarians to select just the
right title for one or more of the above reading strategies
Use it to enhance the record for teachers and librarians to select just the
right title to use at a individual school or grade level. (Gr. 3 in the
Academic Content Standards for Social Studies is for local community
history)--this would be different depending on school location. AND the
Academic Content Standards/Indicators are process and content driven so one 3rd
grade teacher may wish to meet the Indicators with a different trade titles
than another 3rd grade teacher--as long as the Indicators are taught/materials
can be different.
The use of the 658 tag can not be built into the record based on
publisher/vendor assignment. This is a professional/local decision that is best
assigned by the individual librarian based on the needs at their site. ©2005 Mary Mayer
