● 1591 born in England
● 1634 immigrated to Massachusetts Bay Colony
● Began leading religious discussions
● Governor John Winthrop led charge against her
for violating Puritan beliefs
● 1637-8 brought to trial, banished
● Moved to Rhode Island
● 1643 killed in an Indian attack
● Remembered today as pioneer for religious

Hutchinson’s Controversial
Beliefs
● “As I understand it, laws, commands, rules and edicts are for
those who have not the light which makes plain the pathway”
("Anne Hutchinson Quotes").
● Anne Hutchinson believed
○ faith is personal and that people don't need pastors to be
Christians.
○ that GRACE and a PERSONAL RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD
was more important than the PURITAN beliefs of GOOD
WORKS or LAW.
● Antinomian—against the law. ("Anne Hutchinson")
The Trial
● brought to trial in 1637.
● Puritan preachers stressed the
“covenant of works." Anne Hutchinson
believed in a “covenant of grace.”
● Found guilty and banished from the
Massachusetts Bay Colony (“Mrs. Anne

● Hutchinson said: “But now having seen
him which is invisible I fear not what

Other Related Events
● Hutchinson was part of Colonial America. Settlers had
been coming since 1620.
● 1630: John Winthrop came to MA with 1000 Puritans to
escape religious persecution.
● The Puritans’ strong religious beliefs caused them to be
separate from and judge others.
● 1636 Rhode Island is established as a haven of religious
freedom
● Puritan influence also led the Salem Witch Trials of
1692.

● Henrietta Deering Johnston (b. 1670)
considered one of the first important women
